+CyberCSGO This video was initially produced for members of my chorus that use Audacity to produce split track recordings to allow others to evaluate our singing. We intentionally isolate left and right tracks to allow evaluators to hear our track without interference from the other parts when necessary. I made it public so it was easy to access. Now apparently over 17.000 found the link.
This tutorial was initially designed for folks doing split track performance evaluations. Their part in the left, the other parts in the right. This was intended for a group of 50 or so where 5 or 6 was hitting issues. Somehow it ended up getting 30,000+ views.
When the student is ready to learn the teacher will appear. I'm amazed this video helped me tremendously in fixing my recording issues and this isn't even what i typed in the search engine.
this is the first time I've ever been able to fix the issue and I've been using audacity since 2008ish. how have I never seen this video before, this needs to be common knowledge!
I cannot thank you enough sir. Much appreciated. Was trying to record covers for a while now but didn't go as planned with the latency issues (I had no idea what latency is though). Posted a cover recently somewhere and was told that I really need to follow the beat better when I could swear I was following it perfectly while recording! I felt really bad as I didn't know if it's really the software or just me. I've got my confidence back now! Thank you again!
Thank you sir!!! This was smart! And it works. If you dont have newest audacity version download it so you dont miss relevant options. If you need to sync other than voice then just play your instrument in time with the click!
+Gamingwithcoonar These are split track multi part practice recordings. The videos were intended for my a capella Barbershop harmony chorus. We are required to submit evaluation tracks where our part is isolated from the others. This is why the audio is generated with left and right track separation. After posting the video it appears to have benefited more than the target audience of 40 I made the video for. Hope that clears up why the channels were separated.
Awesome! I listened in mono, LOL! But it really explained this perfectly! Now I got it, LOL! I tested this on my laptop and there is no latency. I guess having a Quad core CPU and tons of RAM keep this in check. Anyway, thanks for the video! If this ever becomes a problem, I now know how to quickly fix it.
Thanks for the nicely organized video. I'm on WIN7 using Audacity ver. 2.1.1. and I followed your procedure exactly. But the latency time is unfazed by adding a time correction under the Edit/Preferences/Recording menu. Even though it seemed illogical to do it I also tried to change sign (plus or minus) and it still had no effect - - same a latency period was observed regardless of what I entered. Also I do not see the latency time correction in the counter at the bottom of the page like you did. But that is no matter because I could estimate if from the bar at the top. Bottom line my copy of Audacity is not responsive to the correction factor entered
+Mandolin1944 OK, David. Please ignore my comment -- your method works just fine. I made a "power of tens" units error and did not have the meter set in milliseconds and thus the correction I was adding (-0.0162 seconds) was correct but it should have been entered as -162 milliseconds as are the units the correction box is calibrated in. I left my foolish first comment up here because some else might stumble down that dark alley.
Mandolin1944, Thank you for that glimmer of light. It was very helpful, as I made a similar error regarding the units in the correction box. Thanks also to David, the OP for posting in the first place. :)
This is a really ingenious technique that you have taught us. Thanks for it. I was thinking, is there a more accurate way to correct latency, like how its automatically done in softwares like Garageband. Like to make the latency correction absolute
I will be trying this when I get home from work today, if I have any other issues I will reach out to you and hopefully you can assist me in finding a resolution
The "echo" during recording is a totally different issue. This has to do with Playthrough. I personally choose to use an external mixer to hear myself and the recorded music. Here is the manual on it: manual.audacityteam.org/man/tutorial_audacity_settings_for_recording.html Software Playthrough Now click on the Transport menu and, if you are recording from a microphone, make sure that "Software Playthrough" is not checked - Software Playthrough will cause undesirable feedback from the computer speakers to the microphone. If you are recording a guitar or keyboard and want to hear the instrument through the computer speakers, make sure that "Software Playthrough" is checked. Using Software Playthrough will cause a slight delay between time you play a note and the time you hear it. The amount of delay will vary between computers and operating systems. There is no way to avoid this delay. If you find it bothersome, the best solution is to play the guitar or keyboard through a mixer and plug headphones into the mixer. Hardware playthrough This is a method available on some Windows and Linux machines that lets you unmute the input directly in the sound device. To use this, open the operating system sound mixer, then the Playback section, then unmute line-in and turn the volume up. You can find the system mixer in the Control Panel at Sound on Windows 10/Windows 8/Windows 7/Windows Vista or Sounds and Audio Devices on Windows XP. On Linux, it may be possible to unmute input devices in ALSAmixer then set playback and recording devices in Audacity to the (hw) device. Warning icon Unfortunately Macs have not had proper hardware playthrough support for some years. On most machines Audacity's Hardware Playthrough choice in Recording Preferences is not functional. If hardware playthrough is required it is best to use an external USB or Firewire audio device that has a headphones jack for no-latency monitoring (such as the Behringer UCA 202 USB or Zoom H2 USB).
The fix worked however, when you're recording, the monitoring you hear while you're recording your voice to the music track don't sync. Of course when you play it back it's fine. But you now get a vocal delay in your headphones when recording while monitoring. The latency switched position from recording and play back to hearing it while you record. It's very weird.
My main problem is that the length indicator is not working. I set it to milliseconds but it was way off. so under the length which option should be set?
hi david. i did just as you said. after i get the click track it was fine. but when i record and the next track automatically come and records. but no sound found in the recorded track. click sound is not getting recorded. what am i missing. will wait for your reply please.
Play it though a speaker rather than the headphones and it will re-record it. Also, Preferences >> Recording; make sure the overdub setting is checked.
If you do not own any microphone whatsoever and have no way to borrow one then I suggest you just use a direct cable and connect it from mic to headphone/speaker on the computer. You might need to adjust the volume to low if it is too loud and distorted when calibrating. Once you get the level set it does not matter what the source is, it will work. If you do not even have access to a cable to connect between mic and headphone then just experiment with the latency value manually putting in values until you get it close then perfect.
***** So does this mean if I do your tutorial with mic input , it will help my line in input with my guitar ? and how will I be able to record with my headphones in the mic input, you just said earlier ?
It seems like the latency period is different every time I try this. I've closed all my applications, but there are always things running the background.
Make sure you actually close the applications not minimize them. If you want to be sure nothing is using network activity you might want to disable your network connections. On a laptop it is easy. Use the Airplane mode. If a tower computer does not have this you can right click on the wireless and wired connections and manually disable them. From there if you really believe all apps are shut and you still have activity I would seriously look at a Virus scan to look for some virus application taking control of your computer.
hello, i did all of the above and got the numbers right, but when i record my voice there is still a delay before it comes out of phones, can you help?
I followed this video to the letter and got the 2 tracks of click track synced perfectly, but when I try actual audio recording the delay is as bad as ever. What's the deal, what am I doing wrong.
Michael, I want to be sure you have EVERYTHING shut down except for audacity to be sure some other app is not kicking in and causing delays. Also you can try to manually plug in adjustment numbers until you find the one that works. you should hear it get worse or better as you adjust the value.
I am wondering if you are dealing with another irrelevant issue having to do with recording and hearing yourself in the headphones. That is "Playthrough". My post is on playback after recording. In what are you recording?? mic or direct laptop?
Is it necessary to correct latency when audacity used only to merge vocals recorded on some other interface and karaoke track...
It is necessary when you are adding a live recording to pre existing recordings. It is not relevant when merging two pre recorded tracks.
