  • In this video we build a chamfering block for use on the surface grinder. This speeds up the tedious operation of grinding precision chamfers on hardened parts. We modify the design so no grinding or heat treating is needed. A simple project that saves huge amounts of time.

As a woodchuck, I'm proud to see the use you're getting out of the block plane! When I started woodworking I was all about finding the best, most efficient way to use power tools to complete a task. But I've come to learn that there are so many tasks that can be completed easier, faster, and with as-good, if not better results, with quality hand tools. Any new and novel use for a tool only increases that tools value.

I love using my Record plane on Delrin. I have had good luck by skewing the plane about 15 Degrees. That way the edge doesn't hit the saw marks straight on. But using a plane on Delrin is oddly satisfying. Once I get the bite set it is great. Push and Robert Is Your Father's Brother.

Pretty cool. If you don't have a grinder an alternative is to make a v cut into a block of delrin, drill a hole down through the block half way down the V, take a broken quarter inch endmill, grind the endmill flat, then grind half of it away at the end, then grind a relief, put the cutter in the hole so it so it can cut a chamfer as you push stock along it. you can add set screws for adjustment and tightening the cutter

On the last cutout of the plastic how about coming in at the middle and work outward in both directions to preserve as much supporting material for as long as possible? That might minimize the vibration you spoke of.

    suggestion
I could see some significant bowing on the plastic part right at the top middle. That would result in wider chamfers as you apply higher pressure. I would advise you to make that top portion of the plastic jig out of steel. Hold it down with two screws similar to how you did the bottom. just section it off at the "V" valley parallel to the bottom.

I think all the woodchucks would be at my door with pitchforks and torches if I machined a groove in the sole.
      Cheers,
      Tom

That is a very expensive tool, considering its size. ($100) It's not one you pick up at home depot.

Tom probably couldn't see it while he was doing it but in the close up from the camera's point of view, you could really see that unsupported top flexing like crazy.
In plastic, moving the V further down to make the unsupported part thicker would be one option.
The other would be to flycut the back opening for a close fit to the wheel to minimize the length of the unsupported part.
    Or both.

      *flexing a bit.

    Very cool 👍
You could add a bit of meat to the top piece without thickening the whole block by dropping the V down a little.

hey! Absoultly love your content! Where did you get the thin, large v-blocks at 26:58?
