One Lonely Farmer is not an idiot. You sir are a farmer who pays attention to all the details in order to be the best farmer you can be with the land you have to work with. I grew up on a dairy farm in upstate New York. I’ve learned as much from you as I did from my dad before he was killed in a freak farm accident. My mother would not let me take over the farm. She sold it very soon after my dad’s death. I drive OTR truck now after working 26 years in a factory setting. You and several other farmers that are on You Tube have kept me updated with the farming life. I enjoy all of your videos no matter the content. Keep up the good work.
My sweet corn (Incredible) also has the top end dead, the rest of the cobb looks great. I hand cultivate and never use herbicide. I often wondered what cause this dead end problem. "Southeast Texas" Thanks for your video!
Glad you and your farming family are blessed producing great crops. Thank you for taking us viewers along with you this season, looking forward for harvest videos. I appreciate you being genuine and honest.
This is in fact an ear deformation typically called “Tip Dieback”. This condition is a result of a lack of ovule fertilization. There a MANY different reasons this can occur, but they are all linked to plant stress. Common causes would be Hot temperatures, foliar diseases, nitrogen deficiency, drought, and micronutrient deficiency. It would be very tough for any agronomist to determine the cause without actively working with your farm. I live and work very close to Cole, his ear inconveniences are almost certainly due to lack of nitrogen among other nutrients. As of today my trial plot in cole’s area had received 36” of rain since planting on April 26th. That’s 16” above average and many of the rains came in shots of 8”-13”. We leached a lot of preplant N.

Great video WES. Lots of knowledge going on here and it takes some time to work through everything and glad you got it!! We have corn producers here in East Texas and northern Texas that have changed their market strategy to sell large bags of corn 2000 lbs to the deer 🦌 hunters which is a great way to work around the 3.75 bushels price. Feed store are still getting 9$ a bag. We have so many millions of acres of pine trees and they can survive without the corn feeders!!
Your on to something. East Central IL is the same. Hasn't looked right since it came up. Almost looks like lack of nitrogen but there was plenty applied.
Absolutely top knotch Wes,precise information and on point. If you could create your own fish emulsion in a tank on the farm and foliar spray it this would reduce herbicide inputs and increase the ability of the soil microorganisms due to being fed a liquid diet better uptake of nutrients in to the plants, healthy plants are more resilient to bugs.Feed the microbial bacteria in the soil and reap the benefits, best wishes for an awesome harvest, cheers.
I made it to the end, but I will not call you names sir. You are very knowledgeable about farming Mr. Wes. People sure don't appreciate what us farmers do everyday.
Nope not an ID10T. Your three years in on regenerative ag as I am as well. Glad you got some rain I have not had any good rain since June our corn and soybean is not looking good. ( made it to the end not calling you any names lol)
I sure wish you had some strips of GSP (grower standard practice) fertility. our corn is filling to the tip, where we got rain. Most of our fields have huge dead spots from 45 days of zero rain and we had 15+ days of 100+ and wind. Some of the field will be 25% over yield goal, while 10 feet away is a 0. variability will be off the chart this year. (nw kansas)

It's not unusual to see tip back in the Northeast. Up here in Massachusetts we have flocks of starlings peck the tips and leave the open ear prone for mold. Since most of the corn is being chopped for feed it hasn't been an issue that has concerned us.
