It was a huge myth that the Punk bands couldn't really play their instruments that well. A lot of them had been playing for years in pub rock bands and were excellent musicians. They just ran with the image of 3 chord thrash merchants.
I learned bass around that time, he plays so well and I can hear how Punk influenced my playing. Solid. Glen is awesome, so glad he is receiving the recognition he so deserves. I wonder what NMTB would have sounded like with him on bass?...
@@kevinateague you prefer chris speddings lead guitar overdubs? Magical to hear him play that unaccompanied. It reminds a bit of his style as recorded very clearly on the Sex Pistols cover of the Who's "Substitute". But I don't think he was recorded on "Nevermind the Bollocks", which was a great LP, but could possibly have been even greater.
The Matlock demos were far superior to Never Mind the Bollocks. Not only is he a great player he brought a groove to the songs that Steve (hardly even being a competent guitarist at that point let alone a bass player) couldn't capture. Put "Sex Pistols broadcast debut" in the search & watch how Glen carries the whole song.
He liked to bathe and he liked The Beatles; so they had to let him go and replace him with Sid Vicious of all people. Doesn't matter anyway. Sid didn't play on Never Mind The Bollocks; all bass parts were played by Steve exept for Anarchy. The album was their debut and their swan song. Anything after that is pointless.
I heard the isolated track before hearing this video. Before I really knew the story of Glen and Sid and having an admittedly stereotypical view of punk musicianship, I was shocked by how well played and musical the playing was. Glen really is a good player and it’s such a shame the band went style over substance.
You would think after all these years he would've actually learned to play the bass. He couldn't play when he was in the Pistols but he was only a kid then. No excuse at his age now!
What a great musician and decent bloke Glen is- love that his career has been so varied and cool. Proper bassist.
I legitimately had no idea it was this intricate
It is, he was a great player. Listen to I Wanna Be Me and focus in the bass, it blows most other punk bass lines out of the water.
Yeah, right?

Glen is such a decent guy and a great musician. 👍
Glenn leaving the pistols was the beginning of the end!
I agree.
He didn’t leave, he was dumped by Malcolm McLaren
@@Andy_Byrne good, the end of the beginning. Otherwise they might not have imploded and become just another rock band
@@RollrightKnights And now he's supplying the bottom end in Blondie..............

Too musical…nmtb had to be how it was..it needed the nihilistic edge to be classic
listen to the majestic studio demos. i prefer it to nmtb. glen on nmtb woulda been immense.

Sid was pathetic in every way.
@@brianmansfield666 What bollocks you spout. 🤡
Awsome 🙌🏻
Glen has really clean feet, that's a rock and roll fact.
A song for the ages...
Always wondered how he played this. Cheers!

Great vid, so many questions now answered on how he actually plays it!
Glen is a true legend!
Sid had no chance learning this!
Agreed, Sid couldn't do this if you gave him a year to learn it. A deceivingly difficult bass part.
Love it
Probably the first time he brought back his trusty Rickenbacker 4001 since his departure from the Pistols in 1977.
Flats on that Rick... Knew he was always a flatwound player.
He wrote all thise goddamn songs and the motown bit makes total sense.
0:59. True anarchists, this lot, they’re all keeping their own beat.
This could totally be a Booker T & the MGs instrumental or Meters..so much for the old they couldn´t play nonsense..
I definitely heard Green Onions listening to that
Sid couldn't play, though he wasn't a bad singer.

What a perfect timing he's got
Wow it sounds like I cant turn you loose by Otis Reading
An important part of the Pistols legacy (whether Lydon likes it or not).
"Tamla Motown"...nailed it. Not many people know. Perhaps, now they do.
?
I see that in a lot of other bass players as well.
Bill Wyman Paul McCartney and John Paul Jones are three that readily spring to mind.
They sound ready for bed rather than anarchy.... 😏
Sid version was like a holy grail of punk rock
If you want to hear the Sid Vicious version, just press mute.
…And Justice For Sid
Who'd have guessed that Glenn would turn out to be the coolest and most talented Pistol.
Well I guess Blonde knew.

He played most of the basslines on NMTB. Vicious only played on a couple and they were buried deep in the mix, with Steve Jones playing over them
incredible bass player
😂😂😂😂😂
I definitely have to go to live (from Italy where I am) in Liverpool...
Matlock & his Ric! Wonder if that’s the same Ric from the Pistol days?
Very good bass player

Matlock, Cool as Fuck.
Wow , Slower then it sounds on album ?
Yea your right it is slower 🤪
Blues Brothers?
amazing!😍
Listening to a recent performance, Glen should of played lead, because Steve couldn't get the notes as we know them.
Bring back Sidney

Similar to Booker T?
He was a Duck Dunn fan.
Can you just imagine Sid trying to play this, lol

He is my favourite Sex Pistol
Today I learnt Anarchy has a key change
Sid couldn’t play like that …..
🐬🐦. Ohhh what's this Tune m8 🐦🌊🌊🦤
Sid could play it better. lol ! Wow. I hear Motown.
and he was replaced by sid vicious 🤦🏽♂️

Glenn Matlock could always play, it’s Sid Vicious who couldn’t play and was a waste of time.
Geddy lee take that bass off that man😂

Then why are you here? Don’t you have some decorating to do?

he's no Sid.

Sid had a great voice and would have been a great front man in The Damned
