The Heisler at Roaring Camp had its "hooter" whistle rebuilt recently, and Train Crew member, Trevor, who works as a fireman on the railroad, let us know they would be running it with that whistle on it. So, of course, that sounded like a good enough excuse to go Chasing Trains! to us!

At 9:02 that single chime “hooter” whistle on The heisler sound perfect for it. The heisler does look a bit chubby…

just found this great last minute impromptu documentary on the Roaring Camp railroads and loved it. I'm a 75-year-old San Jose resident and railfan and back in the 60s when I was in high school and college, I watched them build the roaring camp Narrow Gauge and the corkscrew Trestle and saw it in operation before the fire. I believe I rode on it once before it burned down. I hiked back up there in the 90s and explored the remains and was trying to figure out the configuration of the trestle, I found it a little bit tricky but your video helped me to remember how it was laid out. you guys have got the history nailed down and also for the Southern Pacific Standard gauge which used to be the south pacific coast. I explored most of that right away in the early 60s as well and as many of the tunnels that I could get into and where the trestles had been all the way from Los Gatos to felton. that was quite a right away with two tunnels longer than 6000 ft. a family member who had been a Southern Pacific engineer who passed away in 2008 used to volunteer as engineer on the big trees and Pacific run to Santa Cruz and I got a cab ride with him several times that was wonderful. I need to go back up there and explore some more but getting a little bit too old to make a hike up to the top I guess I'll have to pay and ride the train! thanks again for putting that up and I'm glad I found it and you guys have the best coverage of the remnants of The Trestle that I have found anywhere on RUclips thank you for doing that

Thanks for your comments, Dennis. We love Roaring Camp. I have a friend who shared some very good pictures of the corkscrew trestle before the fire burned it down. I was amazed to see them, as good photos of the trestle are very rare. If had them prior to publishing the video I would definitely have included them.

@@tsgmultimedia it would be great if you could post them sometime, I have fantasized about the prospect of seeing The Trestle rebuilt, but practically speaking we all know the cost would be prohibitive and the politics today with all the environmental concerns would require studies engineering Etc and if one redwood tree had to be cut down that would be the end of it. it's amazing that F. Norman Clark was able to accomplish that as you said in the video, I was there and saw him the day the dixiana Shay arrived it was a rainy muddy day when they had just unloaded the locomotive and a small group of fans had gathered for the occasion, sometime around 1961 or 62 as I recall you probably would know the date. I agree it is amazing what was accomplished there by that one man and I'm sure it was a heartbreak for him when that fire occurred. didn't he pass away not too long after that?
keep up the good work guys thanks again, Dennis

It is expensive to complete a project like this, but I have heard that it is under very serious contemplation.

I miss Tuolumne's old whistle she sounded a lot better and more like Dixie. I seriously hope they never get rid of Dixie's whistle it's the best one there.

There's another Clark who build a logging railroad for a park. I don't remember his first name but he built a standard gage logging railroad up in Lincoln New Hampshire called the White Mountain Central Railroad. They have a Climax, Hisler, Shay, porter, a bigger Porter locomotive, a 44 tunnor and a small switch Dizzle. Most of the locomotives operate with the climax being there main steam locomotive that they operate. You should look the railroad up on RUclips and you should pay them a visit sometime.

Late reply, but no! Most times you will have to pay for parking though, unless you enter through Henry Cowell and have a California State Parks pass.
