NYC Subway R62A with Rohr motors

  • I grew up riding the Metro in Washington, DC, and while visiting New York City, in riding the R62A cars on the subway, I couldn't help but notice that the door chimes on the cars were the same as the ones that used to exist on the Rohr cars on the DC Metro. I couldn't help but think that the distinctive Rohr motor sound was noticeably missing on these cars whenever they would depart a station. So to satisfy my own desire for this combination, I cobbled this together, taking a video that I shot of the R62A at Cathedral Parkway-110th Street station and splicing the sound of the Rohr motors over it. For someone who remembers the Rohr cars in DC, it just felt better to have that sound in there, even though New York never had motors like this.

I remember those Rohr motors/propulsion sounds from back then when it comes to seeing them depart and/or arrive to the next stop. You don't really get to hear those exact same motors like that years later since Metro eliminated the 1K/4K/5K-Series Trains.

Now metro has to bring 1000 to the convention center for a future auto show next to an 8K prototype. Icon's turning 50 very soon.

That would be a good reason for Metro to finish doing whatever restoration work that they started to do on 1000-1001. Right now, the cars are just sitting at Greenbelt rail yard not doing anything, in a half-finished state, like they started restoring them and then stopped.
