    Have an F10 with the same engine N57. Hope so you will show us how to install the oil catch can. Was thinking to do it while ago, but didn't find how to install exactly on this engine model.
    By the way have a nice holiday!

    We bought a volvo c70 coupe 2litre 5 cylinder for £250. It was a beautiful characterful car and loads of luxury for no money. Highly recommend you try one for your low budget project.

    Diesel engines have never injected fuel before the inlet valve. Only petrol/alternatively fuelled vehicles injected/metered fuel before the inlet valve that kept the inlet port clean as you describe. Indirect diesel injection involved a pre-combustion chamber in the cylinder head where the fuel was injected and combusted. You are right though, a catch can system is a good idea on modern diesels and direct injection petrol engines. They are not fitted from factory because of the maintenance required as you describe. As long as the engine is (fairly) reliable until 100k thats all they are worried about............in my humble opinion lol.

    If you fitting a catch can put it where it will get airflow over it as you drive forward , it will cool the vapour more and collect more oil , so less going into the intake

    I bought a 2003 X5 as a non runner for £1200 , expecting to spend some time fixing it up , turned out to be a failed electric pump , cost £25 to fix. Using it for winter now

    EGR and DPF removal are the best things you can do to any modern diesel.. Do these along with a remap and you're pretty much bulletproof

    • @larrrbs
      @larrrbs 5 лет назад

      George Austers it’s not a good idea to remove the DPF! That’s an M.O.T failure plus if you get caught without one it’s a HUGE fine! Not to mention all the pollution you’d be putting on everyone else.

    • @GeorgeAusters
      @GeorgeAusters 5 лет назад

      @@larrrbs The polution point is up for debate. You get a much better combustion without the EGR and I got 10-15mpg better without both.
      It's only a visual inspection for the DPF...
      It's better than having your engine constantly clogging up and risk blowing your turbo costing thousands

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  5 лет назад

      I thought they look for a differential pressure before/after the DPF to prove there’s something there... although that could be complete bollocks? 🤷‍♂️

    This being a ex police car it’s a mix of cheep diesel + turbo letting oil mist through + perhaps faulty crankcase breather and a LOT OF ENGINE IDLE = A LOT OF SOOT IN INLET MANIFOLD

    • @bmwsincekid
      @bmwsincekid 5 лет назад

      the problem is its built in the cylinder cover ,how can u tell if the breather is faulty? because 'remove oil cap while engine run' doesent work i have seen 20.000km bmw 435d with huge smoke come from oil cap while running, also checked my friends 335d same mine same, also checked 130d with low mileage and it was same...

    Also very close to install a catch can on my N57. Since I've cleaned out the messy intake manifold I realized the large amount of oil in it. Also running (right now) an open PVC to evaluate the amount of oil vapour passing by. Which is quite a bit.
    In my case I am interested in the ProVent200. Since you're showing it on the thumbnail I would be stocked if you're going for the same approach.

    A good catch can is a good idea but should be seen as a secondary mod to an egr delete. If you don’t do the egr delete then you may as well save your money on the catch can as well.
    Also petrol Di is different to diesel Di, diesels never inject in the inlet port or on the back of the valves etc so no washing of the inlet track or valves has ever happened or can happen. It’s the egr that is route cause.
    You are missing the point, but good luck.

    • @Nut_Job.
      @Nut_Job.  5 лет назад

      My issue with an EGR delete is that apart from decreasing NOx emissions I understand it to help control cylinder temperatures & help with fuel economy at low/mid revs. That was my main concern on the RR TDV8 engine too...

    • @santtu9169
      @santtu9169 5 лет назад +1

      BMW N-series petrol engines neither do inject petrol on intake ports or intake valves, but due to it doesnt have egr system, it doesnt build that much carbon on intake valves. The n54 is notorious for carbon build up, N55 is alot better in terms of carbon build up. I use OCC because I'm heavily tuned with a lot more boost and ethanol mix. It catches alot of oily residue. If not a lot of benefits, it doesnt hurt the engine, just remember to clean/empty the occ regulary

    • @jamest5149
      @jamest5149 5 лет назад

      Nut Job I have fitted a lots of egr deletes including my Farr TDV8, economy and performance always goes up, temps down and you end up with clean inlet manifold(s), inlet valves and tracts plus clean oil, there is not down sides, only upsides other than nox control, but as 99% of vehicles run with their emissions controls in place it is not a bad thing in the scheme of things especially compared with any classic pre emissions cars, also egr and cats can be just as polluting if the car is driven constantly in towns and cities in stop start, short journeys which unfortunately is how most are driven.

    • @jamest5149
      @jamest5149 5 лет назад

      Sande Halonen petrol Di is a different ball game and a catch can is definitely required to stop the choke and gum forming as it’s the only cause.

    I own a 2016 BMW X5 F15-N57 Diesel as a second vehicle. I am about to install a Mann + Hummel ProVent 200 oil separator. I have purchased a new CCV hose that is actually part of a complete intake assembly and I have purchased the ProVent 200. I am planning to install it on the left side (driver's side USA) because there is very little extra space under the hood. I will order 25mm (1 inch) tubing to complete the items I need for the install, about 3 meters. Including two hoses; one pre-bent at 135 degrees, and the second hose at 45 degrees to make the actual transition from the CCV connections to the hoses that will route the vapors to the ProVent at the opposite side of the engine bay. I want it to look as stock as possible. I look forward to see how you progress with your install as well.....

      I started by purchasing a replacement CCV hose. It came as a complete assembly. www.bmwdirectparts.com/oem-parts/bmw-pipe-assembly-13718574785I purchased the pipe assembly just for the CCV hose fittings. I did not want to cut the hose on my X5 so I ordered a replacement. I ordered the Mann + Hummel ProVent200 from Diesel Filters online www.dieselfiltersonline.com/3931070550-mann-filter-industrial-provent-200-si-industrial-off-highway.htmlI will be ordering the Tubing from Pegasus Auto Racing www.pegasusautoracing.com/productdetails.asp?RecID=11013I like to order all the items I need and pre-fit everything before I jump into it. I can send you photos of the items I already have and the area in the engine bay where I plan to install the ProVent 200.The PrVent does not have a reservoir so I will be using a 1/2" I.D hose that is three feet long as a reservoir until I learn how much oil it collects. I plan to use my vacuum extractor to empty the 1/2" tubing. I will keep you posted.Albert

      This design on the N57 isn’t really a big risk to the engine intake (unlike the M57 design) so you could leave them if you want. I found they were getting really clogged with diesel-soot sludge so I just thought I’d remove them while I had the intake manifold off the engine 👍

      Transmission oil changes aren't part of normal service, because car makers try to lower the cost of owning/leasing vehicles, but when told to, they'll do it. Trust me. 🙂
      I have been following this channel for a few days with intrest; I have -15 F11 530xd as a taxi, running with 300.000 km soon, I have always serviced (besides brakepads, discs etc minor between intervals) it in a dealer, mainly because of the good service I have been recieving there and an electronic service "book" tied to a key of a BMW. Even though I use official service, I just buy my parts, oils & such from a different place (have a good friend of mine in autoparts store) and they use parts I bring. Good savings compared that if I would buy everything OEM from the dealer.
      I have been driving longlife intervalls, car asks service about 25-30tkm and also have made sure that everything in transmission gets an oil change in about 90-120tkm when service is due, no troubles what so ever; I say, service does.
      Have been thinking about taking the inlate manifold off and cleaning it like you did, but more than ever I have been conserned about that timing chain. 😲
      Keep it up, greetings from 🇫🇮
