As an long time RVer that lives in Canada and traveled the border crossing many times we have learned, limit the food. On border crossing day, usually only food is in our cooler in the truck. Ensure any product has original packaging, definitely no produce, especially no citrus. When crossing to the US, we just do our grocery there after crossing. Not worth the hassle, on both Canadian and US border sides. Over the years have had several searches with the TT and FW's. Safe travels.

They also were helpful in giving me tips to make the crossing easier. It’s always been easier to cross into Canada than back into America. You stopped in the dirt drop lot I would use.
That is irritating they treated you that poorly. It's good to know that the highly paid officer saved the US from 3 lbs of Canadian rice sneaking into the country. He should have apologized for having to enforce such strange rules on people who clearly made an error of assuming the border security was actually concerned with real crimes, not travelers returning with small amounts of food. Instead he threatened you with a $300 and a $5,000 fine. I know I'll sleep better knowing the RICE patrol is working tirelessly keeping us safe from the unimaginable horrors of open rice containers.
Wow. What an adventure!!! It was a bummer that you couldn’t take in the Canadian sites as you headed back into the lower 48. A whole rig search would have been so stressful! I’m glad you all didn’t have to pay any fines. The boarder patrol does NOT mess around.
We had no problem going into Canada, Alaska, back into Canada, but then (as you experienced) a much more through check coming back into the US. We did prepare so it wasn't that difficult, but they did come inside the RV and check.
I don't know why I thought it was going to be a breeze. I thought we had already gone through he hard part coming into Canada while it was closed in May.
We crosed in ourRV at that same border crosing. They also did a full inspection and took away one hot peper because it was unpackaged and they couldn't determin what country it was grown in. What was weird is that they let us keep another peperwnich we had already cut and partially consumed! The boarder guards were however very frendly. Safe travels!
Funny, our experience has been the opposite. Never had any issues getting back into US, even Alaska, but one time going into Canada with our grandchildren we had to get out of the rig and they searched it from top to bottom and were really rude, climbing on sofa, etc. They found a gun lock in a drawer that we had gotten at an RV rally and had a hard time convincing them that we did not have any weapons in the rig.
They (feds) are absolutely insane on the gun culture and go ape over any sign of it, a loose round or even a sticker. But the still do a crappy job of stopping gun smuggling.
We went through the same border crossing in September 2004 and encountered a somewhat similar situation. We'd met some other RVer's and were traveling together. We were pulling also pulling a travel trailer with a truck, but no other vehicle. When we arrived at this border crossing, they had my wife get out of the truck and join our friends while a female customs agent grilled me on what we had in the pantry and fridge. I simply kept telling her that I didn't know the answers to her questions and that if she wanted answers, she needed to talk to her. After 15 minutes or so of that nonsense, she gave up and we went on our way. All of us thought that perhaps it was because I retired USCG and had stickers on the truck and Canadian Customs knows that Coasties are also law enforcement - but we were leaving Canada? It's sounding like that might be the culture of that station.
FYI going from canada to usa , you are dealing with american customs , we had trouble with watermelon , that was already cut up and in storage containers , as well as dog food , that was clearly made in the usa , when we came back to canada , we only had trouble with a jack knife that they determined , could be opened with one hand , truth be known , i can probably open any jack knife with one hand , lol , they conficated 2 jack knives , but left a very similar knife on the dash , just depends if they are in a bad mood , other times , they just say have a nice day and wave us on
We have traveled many times down to Rocky Point, Mexico as a family sometimes we have spent thanksgiving on the beach there and we bring all kinds of food into Mexico but coming back from Mexico to the US is pretty much the same you can't bring most meats and veggies back including eggs, but uncooked rice that's crazy!
Usually we go caravan style with at least one other person, that way if anything were to happen you have other people there to help you. But there are some cool RV places to stay at and your right at the beach, the biggest thing people freak out about driving down there is getting stopped by the Mexican police, my wife and her family have been going down there for over 30 years and have only been stopped a couple times but that was because of speeding.
There is a reason I refuse to do trips into Canada anymore. I'm a tour operator and used to take groups into Canada all the time before 9/11. After 9/11 it progressively got worse at the border until 2004 where I told my boss to stop sending me there.
All for a little rice outside the bag and I suspect you had it in a container! Seems they should have something better to do. Thank you for great videos
Another amazing, wonderful, and informative video!!! Love your family!! You all always show so many BEAUTIFUL places and provide information about each one. I have had times when Ramen Noodles was about all I had to eat, but found a small can of chicken to add to it, plus a little leftover onion in the fridge, so added them to it to S T R E T C H it and make it stick a little longer. Your kids loved it and have another great memory! I wonder how much longer till you come back to Arizona?
So happy to see you drive through my home!! It truly is a beautiful place and so exciting for your family! Being down in the US on a travel contract it was good for me to see my mountains:)
As a Canadian who frequently crossed the border into the states I can say u need to be prepared. We check the US border website before every crossing as the rules tend to change as to what is allowed. In hundreds of trips we have only been pulled over once with our camper for a random “agricultural” check. Be prepared, know what u have and be polite.
Don’t worry about the CBP/AG folks. Some days/people are nice and others are on a power trip. And we all have bad days too. 😆 I’ve seen an airplane get impounded because of a common brown moth that had been dead for a long time…
Never a dull moment in your daily travels is there. FYI, the USA border officially reopened today to non-essential travel from Canada so you crossed at a great time before the wait times get gnarly.
Welcome home. Where did you cross back in at?? Back in 2009 we went to Leamington (Ontario) by boat. Nothing like being chased down by a US gun boat on Lake Erie to make sure your legal.
I know the topic of this video was border crossing. But I'd like to mention something else. 40 years ago I made my first trip into the Canadian Rockies. I did the Columbia Icefields and went out on the Athabasca Glacier in one of those specially modified busses. (The bus they're using today, looks much nicer) When I saw your video I got a glance at the Athabasca Glacier and I was shocked at what I saw. The glacier has retreated dramatically from the where it was 40 years ago! The toe was much closer to the highway back then. For anyone still not believing in climate change I offer this as evidence.
Yes -the Glacier has receded - my brother in law and I climbed Mt. Athabasca as young adults in the early '80's and I remembered it as a mainly snowy climb after crossing the moraine at the edge of the access road to the Icefield tours operation- returning as a retiree in 2018 was a real revelation of just how much has been lost.
Yes. We are a Travel Nurse Family. My hubs works twelve hour shifts which would leave the kids and I without a vehicle. Sometimes his commute can be an hour from our campsite.
We were just surprised and probably a little unprepared which is our fault. I just never expected to get in trouble (or a warning) because of Jasmine rice from walmart.
The food rules at US border crossings can be weird: we had to cut our tomatoes, and peel our oranges before proceeding. And no poultry-based animal feed (though the guards at an unnamed crossing let us keep our brand-new $60 bag of dog food when I promised not to leave any behind!). For the benefit of others watching: dogs are to be leashed at all times in Canadian national parks, to prevent wildlife conflicts. But I'm not criticizing you folks, you had a lot going on and I'm sure you didn't know.
@@NoOrdinaryPath Dogs must be on Leash at any National or State Parks in California well really we have Leash Laws at ALL times, but Cats are Free Roaming? It's Odd to me as well
It is ridiculous how they choose what can stay open and what can't That has been my main complaint through this whole thing. Big grocery stores could be open but not the smallerones who had less people. In this case the money making part could be open but not the other parts/
On the kids remembering the ramen meal, I have a daughter that still makes buttered noodles with ring bologna from us making that years ago when camping in Montana. I remember border crossing in the 1980s and we never had more than questions asked but other vehicles they would tear the vehicle apart. One border agent said he appreciated we had everything open and everyone had their hands up on the seat backs so they could easily see things, we always said sir to them too. Used to be pretty easy to travel to Canada and Mexico. Hope your family stays safe and healthy. It would be interesting to hear what John has seen for the treatment of covid and how much it differs where he has worked. I know a Nurse local and he works at two sites in the covid area and one site uses treatment listed by the CDC and NIH the other site the lead doctor will not let anyone use the listed treatments. Seems to me if I am sick and will likely die I would be happy to try vit C and D doses with zinc, doesn't seem a question to me.
That is so fun about the buttered noodles. What a great memory. I'm not sure (kristin here) about all the treatments John has done at different hospitals but I have asked him before and they've done vit C and D doses with zinc. Not sure about the CDC vs NIH though.
Wow guys sounds like you had a rough time of it! Hopefully everything is getting better for you and you're able to hit all the national parks that you're hoping to hit on your way to KC! Looking forward to the next video. Safe travels! 🤪

Your husband is right, you're absolutely legally allowed to film in there unless there is private information visible (ie names, DOBs and addresses) of other citizens. I work for the state government and we just received training about what can and can't be filmed due to all the "auditors" going around exposing government abuse of 1st amendment rights. Problem here is, if you argue they can make your life hell, and they know it.
A few years ago one of my coworkers got fined $300 for an apple when leaving Ireland. The Dublin airport has a US Preclearance facility and my coworker didn't understand the significance of what that meant. He brought an apple from the hotel to eat on the plane and planned to get rid of it on the flight. When he went through the customs he didn't declare it since to him he wasn't bringing it into the US, he was going to eat it over the ocean and throw it away on the plane before entering the US. When they checked his bags the US Customs guy at the preclearance place in the Dublin airport had a fit that he "lied" on the form and tried to bring an illegal apple. Unbeknownst to my coworker he had technically entered the US in the preclearance facility. My coworker said the US Customs agent was a complete jerk and instead of being reasonable and just saying "get rid of the apple" he went straight to charges and fines. I doubt they're all that way but they can certainly make it miserable coming back home. It seems especially ridiculous and bizarre given that literally anyone can come across the southern border with nearly anything they can carry.
Regarding the proof of vaccination Canada is being very very cautious. Relax and go with the flow. The rice is a huge thing and always has been. We have crossed the border many times and you just have to be polite.
WOW! Thanks MUCH for great share and video! Hope to cross border other way to visit in Canada, just hope they drop test mandate as it can be $$$:( All the BEST to you and family, safe travels and welcome back to lower 48! Cheers !:)
It's interesting to see the experience of US citizens at the northern border with Canada trying to return home while at the same time non-citizens get a complimentary flight to where they wish to live in US if they just make it to the southern border.
When I went through the border the Canadian side was very friendly, and coming back the US agents all were needlessly aggressive and a-holes. I'm a white male, so though they were butt-heads to my group, we got through quickly but there was a waiting room full of what you call "others" that had clearly been there a long time and being treated even worse.
They mentioned winterizing on the episode they travelled out of Canada. If I remember correctly, they were not at the time, but did plan to soon. Possible that the bathroom request was an extra problem because the lines were winterized? Not sure.
I haven’t crossed the border from 🇨🇦 in a longtime for the very reasons you were harassed. At least you are 🇺🇸 with rights. Try that same crossing if your 🇨🇦😩. Anyway since 9-11 border crossing have gotten to the point where crossing for 2 to 3 days or day trips are just not worth it anymore. That was before Covid.
Just funny people jumping across border in Texas but God forbide you bring rice across lol I live next to the border in north dakota and most not all of the inspectors have a ego that won't quit . They always say you could get a fine !!, it's just a ego thing for them.
I agree. I am American and I drove down to lower 48 from Alaska. Mt Motorhome was searched at the border as well..they were worried about my green pepper and dog food. I kept thinking about the 200,000 that get caught a month going across the southern border and God only knows how many that don’t get caught and wondered if any of them had a pepper. Hahaha. Hard to believe so strict on northern border and loose as a goose on southern border.
I really enjoyed your video. I ran across your channel yesterday. But........why are you so annoyed the border agents requested you shut off your camera? The border agents have to deal with crime, drug traffic, criminals trying to escape, some really dangerous stuff , etc. etc. so perhaps they might like some peace and anonymity in trying to do their job. I'm sure they have a gazillion things to worry about in their jobs and I certainly don't understand your sense of privilege to think you can record them on camera. Other than that really annoying aspect of you just assuming you can record on the camera anything you dang well please, I really enjoyed your video.
1st - Welcome to our channel! We are super glad you found us. 2nd - ewww. I'm sorry I came across whiny/privileged with my filming at the border. That was certainly not my intent. Good points.
@kris cambell, you are one more reason i will stay the heck out of cananda. only time anyone complains about being filmed is when they are doing something they are not suppose to be doing !..get a grip.
I visited New Zealand for a month a few years ago and had a heck of a time returning to the USA in LA. Going through customs was a nightmare. I was surrounded by non-citizens that were let through with barely a look at their passports but they stopped me and went through every suitcase and bag I had several times. They kept asking me questions about every single thing I bought even though I had everything listed, with receipts. I have no idea what I did to set off some alarm or something but they sure thought they were going to find some forbidden item or catch me in a lie. After a close to 17 hour flight it was horrible. I couldn’t believe I was treated so rudely just trying to come home. I’m glad you made it safely back to the United States.
Many years ago (30 ish) Canadians were strict at Niagara Falls even with bus tours entering. We were warned. Drove a bit in Canada and came back at Buffalo without knowing hardly I came back in the US. That was then.
Maybe you should check the rules before making a video acting like entitled babies. Yes, the rules apply to you too, as shocking as that may be to learn.
🙄 Okay Karen, settle down. Wouldn't say we were acting like entitled babies. There are many rules and they get confusing, we weren't trying to smuggle anything into the country. The video is presented with light-hearted humor; seems like maybe you need some of that in your life.
If only they applied 1/10th of the scrutiny at the southern border (for non-citizens). I have experienced similar circumstances coming back to the U.S. (as a U.S. citizen). Great video, thanks!

Yikes. That would be frustrating. We had a hard times getting into Canada too
They (feds) are absolutely insane on the gun culture and go ape over any sign of it, a loose round or even a sticker.
FYI going from canada to usa , you are dealing with american customs , we had trouble with watermelon , that was already cut up and in storage containers , as well as dog food , that was clearly made in the usa , when we came back to canada , we only had trouble with a jack knife that they determined , could be opened with one hand , truth be known , i can probably open any jack knife with one hand , lol , they conficated 2 jack knives , but left a very similar knife on the dash , just depends if they are in a bad mood , other times , they just say have a nice day and wave us on
Darn rain!
No kidding!
I am a former o t r driver. I would never take a load to Canada because it was harder to get back in the states than was to get into Canada .
I didn't expect that although I probably should have
We have traveled many times down to Rocky Point, Mexico as a family sometimes we have spent thanksgiving on the beach there and we bring all kinds of food into Mexico but coming back from Mexico to the US is pretty much the same you can't bring most meats and veggies back including eggs, but uncooked rice that's crazy!
This is something we would love to do. Do you go with a caravan or go it alone usually? We've never ventured into Mexico.
They were entering into the US. You 🤡.
Can i drive my quad on the glaciers?
um..idk haha
@@NoOrdinaryPath there's a double standard for everything. Especially in Canada.
Ramen!!! An awesome reminiscence indeed!!!!!
It was a fabulous meal :)
We're here!!!!!!! 😉😜
@@NoOrdinaryPath WELCOME BACK!!! I hope you will enjoy your stay!!
I’ve seen an airplane get impounded because of a common brown moth that had been dead for a long time…
Oh my about the airplane. Yeah we are just happy to be back
Never a dull moment in your daily travels is there. FYI, the USA border officially reopened today to non-essential travel from Canada so you crossed at a great time before the wait times get gnarly.
Good to know! And yes, we seemed to have a lot of extra adventure while in Canada. haha
Welcome home. Where did you cross back in at?? Back in 2009 we went to Leamington (Ontario) by boat. Nothing like being chased down by a US gun boat on Lake Erie to make sure your legal.
Oh my word! That would be so wild. We came in at Kingsgate in Idaho.
Drastic
why not spend a night or 2, you have a trailer you're not Tenting !
We restricted canadians and now its pay back time
This was on the way back to the US but yes, we got a similar treatment going into Canada
OMG contraband rice. Shameful. 😉
You had a jerk FED officer. That's all.
He wasn't too friendly that's for sure
I drive truck and cross often and I've found US customs is the biggest batch of A%%holes ive ever had to deal with
I'm sure they don't have an easy job
Don't get me started!
ok :)
So this family drives TWO vehicles during their trips??
Yes. We are a Travel Nurse Family. My hubs works twelve hour shifts which would leave the kids and I without a vehicle. Sometimes his commute can be an hour from our campsite.
Was your issue with the US Border Patrol? Seems a little harsh for a free society.
Especially the way things are allowed at the southern border.
Canada is a partially socialist country. They have socialized medical care and a lot of their policies are socialist
That’s all anyone needs is for their dog to run off and bark at a bear.
That's bizzare!
Yep. Its was disappointing
Very frustrating when you have those problems at the border. They can be nasty if they want to. Your back in the states now. Get your Jeep fixed.
Yes! We are working on that
Wow guys sounds like you had a rough time of it! Hopefully everything is getting better for you and you're able to hit all the national parks that you're hoping to hit on your way to KC! Looking forward to the next video. Safe travels! 🤪
Way more dangerous parking next to all the swift trucks 🤣
Or in between them!
11:00 you should have just driven right through. I've heard you can do that now. Isn't it pathetic that people who live here get scolded for rice, but if you traffic kids in illegally you might just find yourself being a millionaire.
That is really weird, rice out of the package is offensive
So offensive!
Did you every find out the problem of the jeep motor the noise?
Nope. 😬 Going to take it in AZ for recall stuff but not sure if its related. The noise comes and goes now
@@NoOrdinaryPath Probably just a cam sensor.

Oh Canada 🤦🏼
Or oh USA haha
Regarding the proof of vaccination Canada is being very very cautious. Relax and go with the flow. The rice is a huge thing and always has been. We have crossed the border many times and you just have to be polite.
Canada has gone over board with their reactions.
Well this was the US border but we got similar treatment on the way into Canada the first time
Alaska is the United States that's why no issues and recording in public places is your constitutional rights
It’s sad that you had to go through crap at our border, but “others” who aren’t U.S. citizens can skate by, smh....
I can't speak to the "others" experiences but I did feel it odd that we were treated pretty harsh for trying to get back into our own country.
@@NoOrdinaryPath POS border agent with low IQ has nothing better to do than harass you
So not touching the border anytime soon. Too much nonsense.
Don't blame you
Do you guys winterize that every time you move when it's cold?
They mentioned winterizing on the episode they travelled out of Canada. If I remember correctly, they were not at the time, but did plan to soon. Possible that the bathroom request was an extra problem because the lines were winterized? Not sure.
no not usually. We don't often travel in the winter but we got caught in it since John's last day was Sept 18.
The bathroom was an issue because we were not able to get into a trailer until it was inspected. We have actually never winterized in 4 years. :)
Wow 🤭😵💫😤🤐
Who knew?
I haven’t crossed the border from 🇨🇦 in a longtime for the very reasons you were harassed. At least you are 🇺🇸 with rights. Try that same crossing if your 🇨🇦😩. Anyway since 9-11 border crossing have gotten to the point where crossing for 2 to 3 days or day trips are just not worth it anymore. That was before Covid.
I can see how that would be pretty difficult.
The way canada runs the border you keep on say to yourself is YOUR NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE?
Yep - either direction
Just funny people jumping across border in Texas but God forbide you bring rice across lol
I live next to the border in north dakota and most not all of the inspectors have a ego that won't quit . They always say you could get a fine !!, it's just a ego thing for them.
When trucking I always tried to use the small crossing.
yeah it was pretty surprising but now we know.
@@traveler320ak7 Well it all depends on who's in the WH I guess?
Do you still notice how beautiful our flag on a breezy day, it's extra, pretty , glad you made it back, : )
Yep. I'm compelled to video it too
I really enjoyed your video.
Oooooooo rice out of packaging ......
I guess my drugs in packaging are safe 800 pounds .. good God has everyone lost their mind ... lmao 🤣
Haha! It was wild....rice. lol
This is why I stay in the Lower 48.
Canada was really beautiful and worth the visit though
How bizarre. I'm glad that's not my job and also glad to be back in the US
What the hell?!!? I’ll never go anywhere that will inspect my stuff. Tyranny will get worse.
Many years ago (30 ish) Canadians were strict at Niagara Falls even with bus tours entering. We were warned. Drove a bit in Canada and came back at Buffalo without knowing hardly I came back in the US. That was then.
We had nothing to hide. Except apparently rice.
You just convinced me to NEVER GO TO CANADA!!!!! Ill keep my $$$ here in the US!
It really is beautiful though. :)
If you don't travel the world and gain personal experiences you will never find the Truth you seek.
Should have crossed the southern boarder... They will let anyone in carrying anything.
If only they applied 1/10th of the scrutiny at the southern border (for non-citizens). I have experienced similar circumstances coming back to the U.S. (as a U.S. citizen). Great video, thanks!
Sounds like you fought the law and the law won!
haha. Would say fought the law but yes they won. :)
You see many you tube videos of other having in trouble. Should be fined the max.
Never heard of rice issues before crossing
