Modern Cars - Was I WRONG?! Punto TwinAir Goodbye

  • I’ve made my feelings on modern cars quite clear - they’re too complex, too idiot proof, too expensive to maintain and almost completely soulless. To find out if I’m justified in that opinion, I bought a Fiat Punto TwinAir as my daily driver for a few months. Question is, have I learned to love it and was I wrong about modern cars...?

    I have a 2015 twinair punto 100hp. I am well pleased with consumption (6.5l /100km or 43,5 mpg). This is well above what factory states, but I don't use start stop nor eco mode, neither do I listen to gear change indicator arrows. I drive by ear and instinct, same as all other cars I drove before this. Engine is punchy and reliable, agile when I need it to be. I miss a bit of torque when I start overtaking someone, but car is not a slouch by any means. Engine does not consume any oil, at least not yet (so far I drove about 3000km).
    I thought this engine will be louder, considering it has 2 cylinders, but I was wrong. It is loud when it starts, but this lasts for about 30 seconds, then it settles down. When it reaches working temperature it is pretty quiet. It has distinctive sound when you accelerate, and I quite like it. This little engine is a gem with a caracter.

    Instead of insisting on lower emissions every year which requires ever more complex and costly technology, they should instead insist on longer warranties. EU6 will be six year warranty, EU7 will be 7 years and so on.

    Punto is somewhat bad comparison point. The good is because IT IS old. its a 2005 design, still designed in early 2000s.
    All the mess tjat it got over the updates is early interation of the worse, but csr itself still overlapped with Seicento producio wise.
    Punto is much bigger than Seicento becuae its bigger segment car. 500 is direct equivalent to Seicento(600).
    Weight different is quit big between the two.

    Its funny to call a punto ( grande, evo) a modern car cuz it isnt. that 0.9 twinair is the worst engine that could possibly be in that vehicle. It suits for the 500 perhaps the panda but not in the punto. You should have bought with simple 1.2 or the 1.4 or 1.4 T-jet those are good engines and way better on fuel than the 0.9 but anyhow i wouldnt consider a punto a modern car at all

    I actually wish we got cars as basic as your Punto here in Canada...compared to Europe there is a shift towards 'gadgets' here so every new car, even base models are offered with a ridiculous amount of nonsense to try and entice buyers....I know they are probably getting hard to find over there, but at least you guys can still BUY a brand new car with things like windy windows, no power locks, etc whereas we can't! :(

    Biggest advance in modern cars is not speed, economy, ride or handling its safety and refinement. 500 miles in an old car you feel you’ve done 500 miles and you ache all over but a modern car u feel like u could drive another 500 miles lol. Some modern cars do have character some are epic to drive like hot hatches etc. But totally with you that unfortunately most cars are designed to do everything well that they become tools that you respect like you respect the technology in a mobile phone but u don’t love it. Old cars they do some things well and other appalling but u love them.

    All the electronic gadgets push prices up and as you say when it goes wrong it's costly.
    In regard to cabin size there is too much plastic which impedes on legroom for the driver which proved that a car is no longer designed around the driver. My MK2 Punto had more legroom, better all-round visibility and a consistent 54 mpg. I refused to buy a new one. All new cars that have gearshift high up the centre console are no good for people with long legs and need to have the steering wheel centrally there is nowhere for the left knee to go.

    You ever consider that maybe you just made an awful choice of car? I used to work for fiat and the twin airs are not a good engine especially when in a punto and also would not class a 7 year old car as modern either, again being a punto they where about 4 years behind everyone else and awful inside and out, not to say I’m bagging on old cars because I myself have a 92 Nissan S13 but I also have a 3 year old Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo. If both rear bulbs go, the car just stops. No warning. It did it at some traffic lights. On a steep hill.
    Currently our present car, a 2012 Citroën C4 Grand Picasso, has broken too, the defroster broke.
    Yeah we can't pick reliable cars... We had a (now extremely rare) Kia Carens MK1 pre facelift, which broke. We had a MK1 Galaxy Ghia, which broke. We had a MK2 Ford Mondeo, which broke. Yes, same story with all of our cars. That includes my dad's ancient Rovers in the 90s.

    Mate that light bulp stuff is not a modern car thing. I had a 1999 bmw that had it. It also told me when a door wasn't closed properly. Electric windows, electric heated side mirrors, automatically darkening mirrors to stop blinding. Parking sensors. ESP, ABS. 6 Air bags. Every part in the car easily accessible, bulps etc super easy to replace. Sucky radio though. None of the electronics ever failed except the parking sensors. Fuel consumption well under the factory stats. I got it down to 6.9l /100km once and averaged under 8l through busy horrible traffic. Factory said around 10l. I can't have it anymore though because it gets taxed extremely extremely extremely high because of its factory fuel consumption rating.

  • @Abedo0o0

    It's funny you're calling a Fiat Punto a representation of a "modern car". it's basically a facelift of the original 2005 Grande Punto.

  • @nocensorship8092
    @nocensorship8092 3 года назад

    I've noticed that underpowered cars always meet the emission regulations but in reality have extremely high fuel consumption. More powerful engines end up being significantly more efficient in real life. For example a 1999 bmw 5 series will easily get below 7liters fuel consumption on the highway at high speeds. Try that with a 0.9 liter engine or a ridiculous 60hp vw UP. Even better put 5 people in each car. At that point the perceived as polluting bmw will have the same or better fuel economy than those underpowered cars and that's even though the bmw is 400kgs heavier. Now take a smaller car, drop a more powerful engine in it and you'd beat the most eco bullshit cars out there in real world fuel economy. Here is also an overlooked factor ; engine oil. Using good low friction (very expensive oil) dramatically reduced the bmws fuel consumption. I remember going 700km on the highway in one night at average speeds of well over 150 kmh and I got under 7l fuel consumption. How's that possible? Well since that old bmw is huge but flat and has a really low c/w aka wind resistance value, it can beat modern cars in those circumstances.

    Your Punto and Seicento aren't in the same category, so comparing them in terms of size and efficiency is pointless. Like you, I agree cars are getting too big, too heavy and drivers too reliant on electronic gadgets to help them out. Of course, you can find ways around some of them. ESP can usually be turned off, change up lights and eco modes ignored. The extra weight, electric steering and electronic throttle, not so much.

  • @xqqqme

    Love your stuff but...this is really kind of a false issue, isn't it? Maybe....*maybe* someone might buy a new car (with either a higher payment or an extension on "life with a car payment") in order to save a little bit on petrol or insurance...but the real concern is *always* the depreciation whack that the first owner will take (and never really see until it's trade-in time). It's all about *total* cost of ownership...not so much ongoing operating costs once purchased.

    • @nocensorship8092
      @nocensorship8092 3 года назад

      The purchase price is by far the smallest part of the vehicle ownership costs in my country. Taxes and insurance make good old reliable cars impossible to own. The insurance companys don't factor in the cars current value but instead it's value when it was new and the government taxes cars so high that cars from around the 2000s become prohibitively expensive to own, for example you'd pay nearly 1000€ in taxes on some regular old bmw. Where this twin air punto would be 50€ tax. The justification is environmental, but the puntos real fuel consumption is significantly higher than its factory claim while my ex bmw was significantly below the claim, in the end the old bmw would be the most economical choice if it wasn't for the ridiculous taxes. Damn punto even costs the same as a much nicer old 5 series. Cost of ownership in my country are ridiculous, just having a car stand around doing nothing is expensive. Cars are just way too costly in my opinion, its so ridiculous, basically one hour of the day you work only for your car, if you drive to work perhaps even two hours of your day go towards paying for it. Cars are money pits, i think society does it all wrong. I want bare bone basic cars, i dont care about safety, just drive slower, its well worth it if we could get to work a few minutes later but could go home an hour earlier with the same money left in our pockets.
