  • Reacting to the wonderfully transphobic PargerU again on this channel. This time they went around asking people if 8 year olds can choose their gender, and shockingly that's the best question they asked.

What parent responds to their small child saying "I want to be a dragon" with "No, you're a boy"? That's so depressing! When I was eight, I wanted to be a unicorn, and do you know what my mom did? She bought me a unicorn onesie and I wore it everywhere. A good parent fosters their child's creativity and listens to their wants and feelings, even if they might seem silly from an adult perspective. Parents shouldn't force their kid to be a rigid mini adult. That's just dumb.

As someone who was raised in the Mormon "Church", I find this question extremely amusing. No, an eight-year-old child can't get a haircut and go by a new name and pronouns, but they CAN make an eternal oath that they'll dedicate themselves to a man in the sky who will split up their family in the afterlife if they have a cup of coffee. Makes perfect sense.

On the dragon thing: when I was a kid (and growing up, even as a teenager), the thing I wanted more than anything in the world was to be something else. And having grown up reading high fantasy nigh on constantly, that took the form of wanting to be a dragon, or a cat, or an elf, or a plant, or whatever the hell else I happened to be interested in at the time, because all of those things were better, because they weren't what I WAS.
In hindsight, that's one of the biggest symptoms I had of being trans. But I didn't know that transgender was something that existed, I didn't know I was ALLOWED, and so I wanted to be a dragon.
TLDR: fuck that dragon comparison because actually, wanting to be SOMETHING ELSE is a massively overlooked symptom of transness.

Highly relatable. I've been obsessed with shapeshifters from a young age and long into adulthood. I always identified most with shapeshifter characters in fiction, and grew frustrated that they were almost always depicted as the villains. (See also how many fictional villains are coded, and how LGBTQ+ people have had to read themselves into the characters for representation.) Since I grew up with depression and chronic illness, I felt that being able to change into anything I wanted would let me escape this form that was causing me so much distress. I'm an author and illustrator now, and have written a lot of stories about shapeshifters like werewolves, kitsune, nanomorphs, you name it. I had been aware for some time that my characters could be interpreted as trans allegories, and I have several who are canonically nonbinary, but it didn't occur to me I was writing about myself the whole time.
Looking back at the stories and characters I created over the course of my life was one of the major signs that helped me figure out my own identity. Perhaps all along I wanted to conceive of a world where I might belong.

We were six years old. It's interesting that some people think an 8-year-old is too young to know their gender, yet no-one questions the fact that most parents force these silly strict gender roles on small kids. I grew up in the 80s, and thankfully, at least some parents are more educated about these things nowadays. Actually, sometimes kids do get sex changes.
Not trans kids who have asked for it, but intersex kids who are too young to even express a gender identity, usually before they’re even speaking.
I wonder why anti trans people never talk about how intersex children are being given sex change surgeries and hormone therapy as children often in secret. I mean, when an intersex baby is given genital alteration to make them look “normal” as a baby, they have around a 40% chance of regretting that, where as a trans person has less than a 1% chance of detransitioning, and the trans person actually consented, so it’s not like there was a violation of bodily autonomy.
It’s almost as if transphobes don’t actually care about protecting children, but only about pushing an agenda that intersex people, since they don’t fit neatly into male or female cut and dry gender boxes, are a threat to.

How I imagine a conversation between trans-phobic person (TP) and a child
TP : So it's time to start thinking about what you career you want
Child: I want to be (Insert job)
TP : That sounds great, now everything you do from now on is going to be working toward that career.
Child: I also want to be (opposite gender)
TP : OMG NO you are too YOUNG to know if that is what you REALLY want. You can't do anything about that till you are grown up and have a better understanding of yourself.

THIS all the way!! I wanted to be a pilot when I was a kid (as long as I can remember... so probably 5 - 6 years old?), but knew I couldn't be because of my eyes, so instead declared that I would be an engineer...
My school careers advisors would tell me that I needed to consider other things as well and make me do various career questionnaires... nearly all of which came back with varying forms of engineering as suggested careers.
A little over 18 years ago I qualified with a masters degree in engineering and have been working as an engineer ever since!
(I know this is different to gender... but it shows that kids CAN be very certain about things that will shape how their lives turn out!)

Career paths can change. I'm 15 and a lot of people my age don't know what they want to do later on. If an 8 year old boy says he wants to be a girl and gets treated like a girl as well as getting surgery and or hormone changes then that will stay forever with him. But when an 8 year old is still in school then he has time thinking about his job. I think a lot of people are underestimating the seriousness.

@@ayoutubeuser7613 no 8 year olds are getting hormones or surgery.
At 8 the most that will happen is they will change their name and the way they dress, style their hair etc.
When they reach puberty they *might* be lucky enough to get puberty blockers (if they have supportive parents, a supportive doctor and have jumped through all the hoops (therapy, etc.). Still nothing irreversible, all puberty blockers do is pause the onset of puberty.
Then when they reach 16 - 18 they *might* be able to get hormones. There will be no kind of surgery until AT LEAST 18.
