Transmission Tunnel and Shifter Fabrication - Do-Over. (Ep. 69)

- The transmission tunnel that I built in Episode 28 ( • Volvo Amazon Building ... . You'll note that I labeled it Part 1 and there never was a Part 2...well, this is part 2. The shifter was sitting low, the tunnel was taking up a lot of room I needed and the shifter was going to make the entire interior look weird. I didn't plan on this - I try to avoid rework - you can't always get it right on the first try.

Flat Bottom Drills make the holes go round.
Someone get's the joke!
Love it!
After seeing the pictures on Instagram, I never imagined all the work to make the forms and depression for the shifter. Great work!
It's always more work that it looks...just glad that this project didn't take a month.
Dang it, I was just getting ready to comment on the seams but there you were right after the end of the video... Great progress, I love the forethought for serviceability!
Ha - I knew someone would mention it! It did feel good to get some progress that didn't take a month.
When you finally bring it to IPD you should stop by "The Do and Re-do" garage for a tour! You are a craftsman...
Thanks Alan. So looking forward to better days and the road trip to Portland!
You made that tunnel look fantastic with just basic tools - well done!!
Thank you very much!
Talent man. Nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks so much better! Time well spent (lots I'm sure).
I think so too! The 240 trans was presenting more problems than it was fixing. Now it should be OK - I clearly under-thought the first version, which always leads to rework.
The benefit of rework is that not only will it be better the second time, but it means you made some progress initially. I often get hung up with analysis paralysis and don't make as much progress as I'd like during round 1.
I’m with you - I don’t ever feel comfortable designing as I go!
Not the way it should be, but sometimes the way you have to roll.
Nice to see some sheet metal again. The carbon fibre has been so much I have started to feel the itch.
Excited to see what’s next.
Next episode is continuing the door details and a few fun bits.

Nice work, I’m going to need to do this in the not too distant future. Really good to see how you did yours.
Thanks Michael, I hope this video helps.
Beautiful!
One thing, though: you tend to show us what you do and comment on it as if we knew about fabrication. Maybe you could consider starting with a quick summary of how the fabrication process works?
Good point - always looking for ways to improve content. Update video coming this week.
@@ThrottleStopGarage I'll happily watch it
damn that's pretty. I wish I could weld.. I am stuck in composites land with my old VFR.
having said that, "make the noise!" :)
Thanks.
Nice work. Thx for sharing tsg
Can't wait to get back to the sheet metal!
Maybe say, "Make the silence!"
That should be on my next tee shirt!
Nice! I have the same pedals in my car. Can't go wrong with tilton.
Thanks - hope they work as good as I think they will.
@@ThrottleStopGarage they work very well!
I find that I procrastinate because I know I can be impulsive...but even if I delay in the name of coming up with a more deliberate plan, I almost always end up going with my first impulse anyway. So I'm trying to teach myself to "cut out the middle man"...just do what I can now and don't waste too much time thinking about it, because that doesn't change the result....for me...
Sometimes I have made something that works in a rush - but I'm rarely happy with the result.
Great
The last time I used my hole punch, I either fractured my wrist or popped a tendon (Don't have insurance, so didn't go to the doctor). Pro tip: Don't try to use a hole punch over an area you filled in with mig weld. haha
That is a good tip! If it's a MIG weld - I just drill it out.
You know, I had a lot of respect for you and your work. But then I learned (in this video) that your level doesn't make a sound. And well, now I'm just forced to unsubscribe. LOL Kidding, of course! I absolutely LOVE you and your channel! And you know, my project Morgan 4/4 is going to need a new transmission tunnel at the front (over the shifter). You've given me some great ideas. Thank you!
BTW That had to be a Project Binky reference, right? LOL
LOL - of course...I've even got a "sound of silence" T-shirt! A 4/4...nice car.
I saw a 1962 2 door Volvo in great shape for not too much $$. Ready to start your second one?
Nope...really have to finish this one. Still a long way to go and many more details to sort out.
Did you make the brake that you used to bend the sheet metal? I would love to see a build video on it if so. I need to make one. Thanks for the great video and great ideas
I did - not much to tell on how it all works. Have a look here - ruclips.net/video/22adMXz6Ew4/видео.html
What...no carbon fibre on the Trans Tunnel?1? I'm disappointment!...I was starting to think this was "Carbon Fibres Are Us...looking good...!
LOL - Still a little carbon to come - but that's coming to a close.
So it's been a long time so I can't exactly remember. Is the transmission a stock T5? If so are you at all worried about breaking gears because if I recall they're only rated to 300 ft-lb of torque.
Hi Aaron - the T5 will not have stock internals. I'm doing the upgrade when I get around to building the trans. It will be capable of handling all the torque I'm planning on throwing at it.
Whereabouts are you located? Would love to see the cf parts in person and the build
Alberta - when it's done we'll hit the road and show it off.
Hey maybe i missed it but what kind of gearbox and engine do you put in
The engine is a 2.3L 5 cylinder Volvo engine and the transmission is a Borg-Warner T5.
@@ThrottleStopGarage thank you very much
19:19 I was just going to write "the shifter is often a great way to refill a manual gearbox with oil, using the filler hole to see when the level is right rather than trying to fill and judge level through that hole, ending up over filling it, and then having it leak/drain back out of the hole once you remove the bottle/spout/hose. Then your "fill hole" text came up :-D Still, sending it anyway. Enjoy.
I hear you, I always struggle to fill transmissions. The T5 shifter is sealed with RTV - so getting it off the transmission isn't easy.
@@ThrottleStopGarage T5 is such a cute little gearbox! I forget/never knew, but what's powering this thing? The Mazda bigger box that turbo RX7s and diesels use can be filled that way AFAIK. Not sure about my other boxes like the J160 and GTR R5A though.
@@fredio54 It's going to be powered by a 5 cylinder turbo Volvo engine. The T5 will have upgraded internals.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Fair enough! But you just specified anywhere between about 200hp and 1000hp :-D mild or wild?
@@fredio54 setting up for 400 whp.
Another missed opportunity to peel-the-white :(
My wife won't let me...she wants to peel-the-white!
Oh no, you've put thw pedals on the wrong side!!!!
LOL - good one Peter. Given we drive on the wrong side of the road, I think they're in the right location on the left side of the car.
My level does not make the noise either!
I should treat that level with more respect. It's a gem.
First!
Great now pull it all off and make it out of carbon fiber😂
“For rigidity” I love your channel
Thanks. It would also take me 3 weeks to get it done.
