    The Appalachian region has some of the richest temperate forests in the world. Coal mining has been an economic driver since the 1700 and1800’s, but with mining, there have been major impacts on the environment such as habitat loss, water and air pollution, and safety issues.
    Since 1970, mined lands in the region have not been restored properly as an unintentional consequence of the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act. After coal is mined, the mining companies have to reconstruct the mountains and reseed the area. In that process they compact the land to prevent landslides, but this hinders the ability of the native plant, tree, and wildlife species to repopulate the area.
    Before being mined, Appalachian ecosystems had healthy, productive, and biodiverse forests that supported local organisms and communities. To return this land to a state where life can thrive, invasive species need to be removed and the soil needs to be ripped up to decompact the site. Once that process is complete, adjacent forests can start to seed into the new area, and water and nutrients will be able to infiltrate the soil making survival for new trees possible.
    In collaboration with Green Forests Work, One Tree Planted is reforesting about 800 acres of formerly mined lands in Pennsylvania, and we expect this area to sequester about 80,000 metric tons of CO2 after 50 years. This work is collaborative and brings many different organizations and interests together.
    🌲 About One Tree Planted:
    One Tree Planted is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and we plant trees! We are a tree planting charity with a goal: to make it as simple as possible for anyone to plant trees. One dollar. One Tree.
    🙋‍♀️ We also run hundreds of tree planting events around the world for people to get outdoors and plant trees in their local communities.

    My biological father, who passed away before I knew him, was born and raised in Appalachia (Whitley County, Ky). I appreciate the opportunity to have made a donation to One Tree Planted, in honor of him and the place he called home. Thank you for the important work you all do.

    Given the level of poverty resulting in the mining companies having moved on or as is happening now with financially strong preferences for installations of renewables resulting in mining companies going bust, the employment opportunities provided by 🌲 planting must come as a very welcome economic and social relief. Deforestation doesn't just cause poverty, inequality and ill health in poor nations, it happens in rich ones too.

      @@onetreeplanted The other crucial aspect of One 🌲 Planted & it's partnerships is you're all more than amply able to demonstrate that the transition to sustainable energy & transportation, energy efficiency, climate change prevention, mitigation, & adaption doesn't have to be an either or situation in terms of employment, quality of life, political leanings etc etc. In fact, it's quite the opposite. This is quite important, especially in a country such as the USA where the vested interests - both political & economic (just look @ Joe Manchin 😑), public fear due a basic lack of education/understanding of how important it is to address human induced climate change or else & sadly, that anthropogenic climate change is even real.
      Worldwide, but particularly in the USA, most STILL don't get it that their accustomed standards of living is about to fall of a cliff due to climate change; affordable food, access to clean H20 , affordable energy for heating, cooking, hot H20, transportation & reliability of all of the above, is not that far from being for the wealthier sections of society.
      If the general public truly understood what's at stake/in store for them, Gov'ts would have virtually no issues with making & funding the incredibly difficult changes 'quick smart' as we used to say when I was a kid. The political tribalism that's so dominant in the US, particularly at federal level, would disappear down the plug hole; politicians worldwide can't say they weren't told how bad it's going to get & how quickly. Claiming: "Oh, but you didn't tell us", just won't cut the mustard.

      The most important thing is that wildlife finally gets a chance of survival and the ecosystem gets fixed again.

    • @pinkelephants1421
      @pinkelephants1421 2 года назад

      @@BalboaBaggins Kind of have to respectfully disagree there. To achieve the the crucial aspects you quite right point out, without community empowerment/ involvement, it's extremely to almost impossible to successfully implement the former as has been shown by many earlier project failures. It's why One Tree Planted, The Eden Project & many other such groups/organisations put community front & centre (before) even considering anything else. A lot of well meaning projects failed miserably, wasting large sums of donors & public money by not putting people front & center. Big difference between 'planting' a 🌲 & 'growing' a 🌲.

    There is so much land out there, not being used as it always was intented to be. So nice to see your dedication of giving this land back to nature.
    Question; who owns these acres of land as seen in the video? Do you guys buy this and then plant trees or how does this work? Thanks!

    • @onetreeplanted
      @onetreeplanted  2 года назад +4

      The portion of the project in this video is from Gallitzin State Forest. In general, we plant on both public and private lands. So typically there are various types of partnerships that occur for a project to form. Part of our vetting process is to ensure that planting is intended for ecosystem restoration meaning, it is not intended for the trees to be harvested. We're still a pretty young nonprofit so we haven't quite gotten to a stage where buying land is in our model but maybe someday!🌱
