I love how you remind us that artists didn't just wake up and paint amazingly out of no where.. it takes time and dedication. This point you made reminded me to not be hard on myself and inspired me to keep moving forward 🥰 thanks Katie!
I love these tips - I've been painting 20 years and I agree with all you're saying. My website is quiet too - although one thing I've noticed is that people regularly sign up for my mailing list - and that is one of the top ways to find new buyers, through your mailing list. I've always, from the very beginning of selling, collected emails (asking permission first) and kept a mailing list. I've sold lots that way over the years. I'd say right now I sell the most through Facebook and Etsy. And it was through Etsy that I just got a new licensing deal that will put my art on Target, Bed Bath & B, etc etc. It's a great place to get discovered. Just a little tip - a GREAT way to get your art videos in front of new people is to post your work and then share a video you made about the painting in the comments. That's how I was able to grow my RUclips channel. And I think artists really need to focus on growing their social media followings like you were saying. So understanding the algorithms is key for each different social media site. I admit, I still haven't conquered Instagram, but Facebook has been invaluable to sharing my art adventures with the world. It's really limitless. We are so lucky as artists to have the world at our fingertips! I wouldn't be an artist without the Internet.
I have been a painter for about fifteen years not quite 20 even though i am 28 and yes we are very lucky to be able to share our work on social media this really helped me gain back the inspiration i needed for getting back on the saddle so to speak have a blessed day and hope wherever you are you are safe and enjoying art
@@KatieJobling lol I could go on and on. Your success inspires me and I hope to grow my art the way you have! I'm sharing my journey on RUclips too, but it takes forever to build a following. Yes! And doing this works extremely well! I love and enjoy the beach so I mainly paint seascapes. I LOVE the process and outcomes; even if some do not come out like I wanted it to be. I love this channel so much as she and her paintings have inspired me!
my best tip is on pricing! when you price your art and are unsure on what you think is too cheap or expensive, ask a friend, family member, stranger/acquaintance and yourself how much you think the painting is worth then get the average!
I would suggest asking someone that doesn't have any relations to you, that way you can get a clear unbiased opinion - and make sure you ask a few people too just to average your results. Speaking from experience in a different medium, family members and friends tend to sugarcoat, unfortunately, even subconsciously.
@@LightshifterGame to add, also don't be afraid to ask someone in the industry too. Identify who you aspire too and also who is accessible, if it means taking a trip to show your work, do it!!!
I loved the bit about don't create art to sell. I forget this so often and often do a run of stuff I think people will like, but then I do something just for me, something unique and different and people are generally drawn to it more
I haven’t sold my art for several years but am getting ready to dive back in 😄 EVERY SINGLE THING you talked about couldn’t be more true. I learned all of those things by doing (as I imagine you did as well) and wow, what valuable lessons. To anyone else watching, please pay attention to what she’s telling you; she is 100% speaking the truth. Great video!
Good luck selling your work - it can be such an amazing adventure! I've met such interesting people through my career as an artist that I otherwise never would have met!
The idea that you have to keep working hard on your art resonates. You can get better, it's not a natural talent, it's a skill. Just like no one wakes up one day to become an accountant (like I am) and perfectly succeeds with numbers, no one wakes up to become an artist and paint a Rembrandt. Since art is becoming a hobby for me (yay!), I can get better by working and practicing on it. No worries about having to be "a natural"!
The tip I enjoyed the most was that no one else should define your creative style as different, bad, weird or whatever. So many people in the world enjoy all types of art. You are my most favorite artist and have kept me recovering and moving forward. Thank you.
I stopped doing commissions entirely after not getting paid for the last two. I'm now focusing on developing my style. I appreciate you mentioning the skill development. I cringe every time some one says "you're so talented". I know they mean well but I draw and paint everyday. Thank you for all the work you put into your videos. They've helped with my development and my mental health. 🎨🇨🇦💞
ikr I cringe so bad when people say im good or that they wish they could do it too. like it takes a LOT of time and effort, I didn't just wake up one day and be able to paint a sunset or draw an anime character

Three of your tips helped me: 1. Daily intensive effort of hard work pays off at some point, because success doesn't happen suddenly, you make it happen. 2. Don't paint to sell, paint what you like. 3. Don't charge too little for your art. I still have two major problems: 1. As I grow better, I see even more flaws in my paintings. This sends me right down into the rabbit hole of imposter syndrome. Also being a true perfectionist, which is far from being a positive trait, I always have the feeling I need to make my work better before I can release it. It always was like this with my writings - I used to be a professional freelance journalist and also wrote for personal gain, and I still do the very personal stuff. I always needed somebody to literally take away my work for release. This is the real problem of a true perfectionist, that one can't let go as the work *always* is perceived as being unfinished and not good enough. So now I have the same issues with my artwork. Is there a sort of trick to ignore real and also peceived flaws in your own artwork? 2. At the moment I do some illustrations and sell a few little pieces, mainly for decorative purposes in other people's homes. I still dint have a unique personal style and therefore don't consider myself as real artist. This leads to me asking only little money for my work and making lots of art for people in my social environment, and very often for free. I know that people won't perceive my artwork as valuable, if I don't do so. How can I trick myself into believing in me as artist and become my own cheerleader, as you said so beautifully. 😊 Or is there a practical way to find and embrace the unique personal style? I don't have a personal style yet and it never just came to me and people see me having several personal styles. I don't even have a favorite medium. I jump around between mediums when painting daily. I haven't tried oil yet, but surely will take some classes on oil painting. But other than that I am trying out whatever I can get my hands on. I always loved charcoal, learned watercolor about two years ago for therapeutic reasons (I have cPTSD, since the last assault on September 7th in 2011, I can't work as professional journalist anymore.) and I truly love watercolor, especially for illustrations. I paint with acrylics and love to discover and also come up with new techniques. I also love mixed media, it's pure freedom and limitless. I combine my painted and monoprinted art with handicrafts and also like to go down the antique, archeological road. Monoprintung really got me and I have a few special ideas that aren't anywhere to be found. Anyhow, my ex-partner told me recently, that he believes my variability and me concubine so very different mediums and techniques are my personal unique style. I dint know. It just feels like I am all over the place with too many focuses. When I plan a piece of art, I always also think about how it needs to be presented as a finished piece - lighting, surrounding colors, sometimes even music. Why can't I just see the painting and nothing else? It would be so much easier. 😢
All the tips are great! I completely agree with " work smarter, not harder". I've been painting for 5 years and starting to build my business of selling my artwork. I am planning on going the social media root instead of a website. Thank you for all of your tip videos and look forward to more.
Trying not to under sell my art but I get people saying its expensive.... i get disheartened when i know how much time i put into my art. Thankyou for sharing your experiences and knowledge with us and being so real about what it takes to be an artist. Wishing you all the best for 2020! 😊🎨🙏
@@heydiq2143I understand, the original art is always more expensive and I'm not changing my prices , I decided to create my art on canvas as well as smaller works on paper...and make prints...that way the price range will be varied.
I don't think I could ever do commissions work, I think it would just get so annoying trying to satisfy someone else's vision. I just want to feel free and do my own thing when I paint, and not turn it into labor.
I've done 3 commissions and it was hard. All 3 customers gave me really bad reference photos. One reference was a 70 year old wedding photo, it was terrible. Won't do it again.
I totally agree with point #1 I'm a Network Engineer, and I only spend 5-10 percent of my time painting, when I thought it's gonna be 80 percent painting and 20 percent admin. And another point you made was "you need to be your own cheerleader". So true 💯 especially in a critical society that consider art as something that's not of much use. Totally agree with you on all the points, thanks a lot for this video, Katie, now I know exactly where I should make sure not to go wrong.
Asking payment upfront is so uncomfortable to me, but have learnt my lessons the hard way. Now I am going to be tough. All of your tips were very informative. Thanks for sharing.
hmm, charging more money for commission makes a lot of sense, now that you say it. I never did, I always charged the same amount like for the paintings I just did "for fun". This helped a lot, thank you, Katie. Great tips!
The piece in your thumbnail is breathtaking. I know you said you only get to spend 20 percent of your time painting, but if you have time, it would be great to get tutorial on how to do that piece, especially getting to see how you work on a canvas of that size.
Beautifully Said! I had such a tough day with my work aka paintings and other things and felt so bad. Thank you for the healthy mental reminders and we need to be our greatest cheerleaders!
Thank you so much for the words of encouragement. I got hurt last week helping victims in a car wreck and haven’t posted a video in a few days. I am afraid no one will ever give me or my channel a shot because I haven’t posted in a few days. I am so worried and really needed these words of encouragement and the reality of everyone has difficulties.
The advice I liked the most was the reminder that nobody starts out a perfect artist. I always thought I had no talent because it didn’t just “happen.” My Mom and Grandmother are/were both fabulous artists. I never felt I could measure up so I didn’t try.
I really appreciate these tips ,I am an artist from the Commonwealth of Dominica in the Caribbean now living in Germany, and these tips are so timely for me,thank you so much for these invaluable tips,.
I love that you say paint to express and enjoy yourself because if I think to myself I must paint to please and sell now I just can't get the motivation uh! So thanks for the reminder, great video thankyou xx
Your art is beautiful and your confidence in painting course is totally amazing. I never want to sell my art I’m a retired teacher so my art is for my personal joy only…. Im such a fan of yours Katie x
I come from a family of artists. Art, music, photography, writers, composers. I always felt out lol. I can draw what I see but not what i imagine. I can write beautifully but I can not express myself too well verbally. But painting is something I love to do. It is hard for me because as i said I can't get my images out. I'm more of an abstract artists I guess. But I'm learning more about colors and techniques. Your art is inspiring. I love it.
All your tips are valuable, but the most sobering one was the ratio of time spent creating art vs. working on the business side of art. Eek! Also, I was very distracted by that beautiful painting in the background and kept wanting a better look at it! Lol
Brilliantly summarized! Having been a working artist for more than 25 years, I can confirm every word you said! You need to see yourself as an entrepreneur if you want to be successful.
@@wendydavenport9418 I didn`t. In my youth there even weren`t any art schools for children. The only way then was to teach yourself and that was an unsurmountable barrier for getting into a gallery. So I found other ways to show my work, started teaching and even founded a public gallery in our local evening school. That way I gradually got seen as an artist in the public eye and so slowly I built my own buyer clientele.
Also, reminding us artists are not just born, it takes hard work and time. My daughter is an accomplished writer/ editor, she gets angry when people think she was just born great at it. It took years of persistence. Thank you
The only possible tip I can add about being a professional artist is learn about taxes in the area you live by talking to local business organizations that support small business. 1 It a resource free most of the time about how to operate a business 2 Taxes come and you don’t want to get hit with a huge bill at the end of the year! Artistic You hit on everything the tip that resonates with me is the tip about filling the artistic need. Business is going to be up and down you got drawn into the world of art for a reason ( pun intended) don’t forget to feed that need or it will die and once that dies it’s not long for everything built on that desire to die too! Now get out there and create!
I loved that you said you need to back yourself and be your own champion! So true. But, to be honest, all your comments come from a place of sincerity and all are sound advice. Thank you 💗

I only paint probably ten percent of the time too - especially since I make a lot of RUclips tutorials. Editing takes SO MUCH TIME! I love your channel!
Ah thank you! I've probably heard all these tips on your other vids but this is a great little recap as I've only just started to try and sell my art now :) ... the one that is especially a great reminder is not to create art to sell... just create it for joy. I hope my art can connect with some people! :)
Thanks for this post. I have been searching for similar information for some time and it's really hard to come by. Thank you for your time to share this. For me, I am a trained designer and wanted to get into the world of illustrating.
Great video, I have noticed many of these things in my first 2 years of being a full time artist. The admin time is not as fun as making art but unfortunately is necessary to sell any art! Photo editing is a great tip too! That has helped me a lot.
You are fantastic at what you do. Your tutorials are wonderful. One thing I wish you would mention for us newbies would be the size of the canvas you are using. I have learned more from watching you then anyone else. I sometimes I just sit and watch. It;s relaxing and has helped me with my depression and anxiety. Thank you

Katie, I hope you get credit for each viewing of your videos, because I've watched this one again and again! Thank you so much for your expertise and encouragement!

I couldn't pick out one tip as it was so inspiring to listen to you sharing when I'd had the same feelings and thoughts. I did a commission a year ago and haven't been able to pick a brush up since. Self belief I guess has to be the biggest thing and I love to paint and for me to sell my work is mainly to make space. Thank you Katie for your inspiration and great Tutorials. Feel free when passing on Facebook Mindful Art.
Thank you so much Katie. I am so glad to open youtube and this video is the first that prompted in my account. I’m your subscriber and you inspired me to get back to painting. And by the way, love the tongue out at the end, made me laugh 😂. Keep it up and you are amazing as always.
i loved the whole video Katie! you brought up great points that some of have thought of but not done, some a lot of us have not thought of at all, & all suggestions were great for anyone just starting to try to find a way to sell our art!! 😊👏🤗❤️💃
Selling online isn't for the faint of heart. There is so much good art online now! But for me, it just challenges me as an artist to get better and better.
That's the thing that always frustrates me! The main thing I get told is that I'm so "talented" and while I do appreciate it, it's an ignorant (sorry everyone who says it trying to be nice!) thing to say. I've worked SO hard for well over a decade to get to where I am with my art and I will continue working hard.. talent doesn't take away the hard work! Ps. I love these types of videos from you :) My tip would be not to base yourself on how many followers you have. Counting those numbers isn't good for your mental health and it doesn't define you :)
Damn girl you talking from my heart I feel you know me 😄I find your channel just ours ago ..you are amazing artist and so cool person. Thank you very much for your videos they really help me and motivate for start sell my paintings. 💖

Great info, basically what you're saying is this day and age an artist has to be a business, an entrepreneur, a receptionist even a bit of a celeb... I just want to paint and someone else promote and sell it. Sales was never a strong point for me...😩😥
I am at the very beginning of my artistic career but I will make sure to charge, at least partially, in case I get some commission. Thanks for the tips!
I always charge half down and then when they are happy with it, I ask for the rest. Sometimes people want to do payment plans, so I am always willing to do that too.

My favorite tip: is that artists do not wake up one day and just know how to paint/ do artwork... Thank u love!!!!!!!!! Love your art, vids, &voice🌱☺
Fave tip. Don't be afraid to share your mistakes and flaws. That's what makes you human! Inspiring 👍🏻 love you 💕
I love that you say paint to express and enjoy yourself because if I think to myself I must paint to please and sell now I just can't get the motivation uh! So thanks for the reminder, great video thankyou xx
4:03 I needed that
Thank you so much for your encouraging words Katie and have a good evening 😊❤
Your art is beautiful and your confidence in painting course is totally amazing. I never want to sell my art I’m a retired teacher so my art is for my personal joy only…. Im such a fan of yours Katie x
I agree with everything you said and thank you for the reminder to paint what you love.
Welcome back! Good to see your paintings again.
I love it.
I was losing all My hope and I wasn't confident about my arts but I loved everything you said and I feel a lot confident ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks a lot 🥰❤️❤️
All your tips are valuable, but the most sobering one was the ratio of time spent creating art vs. working on the business side of art. Eek!
Also, I was very distracted by that beautiful painting in the background and kept wanting a better look at it! Lol
Yes, I love that painting too!
I did also look at it 😅👌
Brilliantly summarized! Having been a working artist for more than 25 years, I can confirm every word you said! You need to see yourself as an entrepreneur if you want to be successful.
How do you get into art world? Do you need to go to art school?
@@wendydavenport9418 I didn`t. In my youth there even weren`t any art schools for children. The only way then was to teach yourself and that was an unsurmountable barrier for getting into a gallery. So I found other ways to show my work, started teaching and even founded a public gallery in our local evening school. That way I gradually got seen as an artist in the public eye and so slowly I built my own buyer clientele.
Dropped everything to watch this 💖
🤗🤗
Me too! Even though I'm a professional, I still learn from Katie!
rachelsstudiodotcom Exactly! Her voice is so soothing as well, I rewatch her vlogs while working on pieces of my own
Also, reminding us artists are not just born, it takes hard work and time.
Thank you 💗
So here me watching this after one year and thats also not to sell but to cheerup my soul... 🧡Thanks and hugs
*"Success doesn't hapen to you , you make it happen!"*
This part touched my heart 😹💞
I loved this this tip the most 🥰
Thank you so much Kaite this vid was so helpful 🌸
I know those days I can't watch your vid on the time but I put it on my maind and my heart to watch it 🥺💛
Love you so much Kaite wish you health and happiness and all the best 🌹💜
I like when you said not to compare others success to our own. They probably had a hard time getting started too.
Great video - what an inspiration you are. I love your positivity, I’ve been scared to put myself out there as an artist but it’s a bit crazy keeping all the art I make, and I’m often told how talented I am - so I should get off the fence and offer my work for sale. Thank you for helping me have some confidence and seeing things a different way. Bless you, I wish you well.
As soon as I see you have uploaded a video I need to watch it I love your videos you are such a beautiful person inside and out
I was really down and confused whether I can do it or not, your video gave me confidence and hope. I don't have any explanation how I feel now, you just impressed me. Happy to subscribe as well! Thank you!
Yay!! You’re welcome 😊
I only paint probably ten percent of the time too - especially since I make a lot of RUclips tutorials. Editing takes SO MUCH TIME! I love your channel!
That's crazy!
I've been trying to learn to make videos. Not brave enough to post anything yet lol
And I loved the point about 20% doing art and 80% other stuff.... and the second point about pricing our art 💗💗💗👍👍👍
Ah thank you! I've probably heard all these tips on your other vids but this is a great little recap as I've only just started to try and sell my art now :) ... the one that is especially a great reminder is not to create art to sell... just create it for joy. I hope my art can connect with some people! :)
What a positive message, Katie. Thank You, and wish you all the best!
Thanks for this post. I have been searching for similar information for some time and it's really hard to come by. Thank you for your time to share this. For me, I am a trained designer and wanted to get into the world of illustrating.
super helpful! Thank you Katie, you are a star!
Arts must expensive, because they made by handmade, great ideas, best techniques, good material and etc. Thanks for sharing..
Thank you so much for this video. I need all the advice I can get.
Great video, I have noticed many of these things in my first 2 years of being a full time artist. The admin time is not as fun as making art but unfortunately is necessary to sell any art! Photo editing is a great tip too! That has helped me a lot.
I love this. I feel like this applies to anyone starting their own business, not just art. Principles and values to apply on our daily life.
Looove this! You have value!
Katie thank you so much for such valuable and lovely sharing!
Your so positive. I'm so glad I found your channel
Thank you
Hey Katie, thank you! I'll be following you definitely ❤️
thank you Katie for sharing your journey. I've been following it for a while now and you helped me to realise I love painting for my own pleasure not in order to sell muy art.
Katie, I hope you get credit for each viewing of your videos, because I've watched this one again and again! Thank you so much for your expertise and encouragement!
Really enjoyed the tips. I love your videos and your art work. My favorite tip was it takes practice and to not compare your art and skills level to others and know that they have taken the journey as well to achieve the level and success they now enjoy. Wish you all the best.
You are blessed 👏🏻❤️ thank you for helping me with my art. 🌺🌺🌻🌻💕
You are amazing, and your tutorials are great, thanks!
You are a breath of fresh air. I love your videos.
the best advice I got. I'm so inspired by your words. Thank you so much for making this video :)
Tks Katie,lots of good points,
Andrea in Florida
Wise words Katie. Thank you so much. Setting up a work email is a great tip!
Thank you so much Katie. I am so glad to open youtube and this video is the first that prompted in my account. I’m your subscriber and you inspired me to get back to painting. I was feeling down since yesterday coz I feel so tired. I paint and also sculpt in polymer clay. Thank you for inspiring me and keeping me back on track. And by the way, love the tongue out at the end, made me laugh 😂. Keep it up and you are amazing as always.
Awesome painting in the back...superb plants!!! And great tutorials...your teachings are awesome...keep it up👍💞
Love this video! I’d love to see a video in the future about what you use to edit your photos/how you edit them. That would be super helpful as well!
i loved the whole video Katie! you brought up great points that some of have thought of but not done, some a lot of us have not thought of at all, & all suggestions were great for anyone just starting to try to find a way to sell our art!! 😊👏🤗❤️💃
Selling online isn't for the faint of heart. There is so much good art online now! But for me, it just challenges me as an artist to get better and better.
Thank you for being so generous with your talent and knowledge!
Thank you, Katie!! :) Very helpful information! Wishing you a blessed day! :) xo
Thank you so much. I love doing art but people are starting to like it more.
Would you be able to make a video that explains the SEO and best practices for social media that you use to sell your art?
Some great tips and really valid points. Thank you for sharing. :)
Ps. I love these types of videos from you :)
My tip would be not to base yourself on how many followers you have. Counting those numbers isn't good for your mental health and it doesn't define you :)
Whenever someone tells me I'm talented I tell them it took 20 years of hard work to get this talented!
thank you. i love all the tips. i am far from selling my art. i just started through your videos
Great advice. best tip for me at this moment is to have a separate art email, Thankyou.
Damn girl you talking from my heart I feel you know me 😄I find your channel just ours ago ..you are amazing artist and so cool person. Thank you very much for your videos they really help me and motivate for start sell my paintings. 💖
Hi Katie, your video comes just at the right time for me, and your encouragements are so good to hear! Thanks for your generosity. Love your work that I now saw on Instagram 😍
I absolutely love the tip about algorithms and stuff. Nteresting.
Loved this very helpful!!!
Thank you, that's just what I needed. Especially the last tip!
Great info, basically what you're saying is this day and age an artist has to be a business, an entrepreneur, a receptionist even a bit of a celeb... I just want to paint and someone else promote and sell it. Sales was never a strong point for me...😩😥
You are so kind and original 😊
Thank you!! This Video Helped me so much. You are an inspiration and a wonderful artist.
Great tips! Thanks so much Katie!
I am at the very beginning of my artistic career but I will make sure to charge, at least partially, in case I get some commission. Thanks for the tips!
I always charge half down and then when they are happy with it, I ask for the rest. Sometimes people want to do payment plans, so I am always willing to do that too.
My all time favourite artist ❤
Thank you, Katie! Love:)
you're so right!! I so agree with everything
Thank u so much katie 🙏
Spot on with the tips❤️
I truly love that you share these tips! You are so inspiring and it is helping me in my journey!!! If you don't mind me asking, can you tell me what color that light bluish/green tree is in the photo behind me. It is so pretty and I love it....
Smart video, thank you Katie, you are so lovely !
My favorite tip was to focus on social media promotion. I was like "oh i need a website" but if you're already pro and the website aint poppin, then it aint poppin!
I need to work on my website. I sell so much more on Etsy and Facebook.
@@rachelparkervarner i feel like even Instagram would be great for sales of individual paintings, because its so visual and people follow hashtags. Not sure how payments work tho
@@windflowerrainstorm6497 I've never sold anything off of Instagram. But it's easy to collect a payment through Paypal. I have sold a lot of paintings through Facebook though. I can always set up a listing through my website or Etsy too so people can pay with their credit card that way too. Sometimes you have to be creative lol!
@@rachelparkervarner I've never sold anything or tried but I've got a house full of paintings and it feels like its time to try and get them out of my living room and into other folks living rooms
@@windflowerrainstorm6497 You should! I need to clear out things too. Maybe I'll do a flash sale lol.
I love this video. Thank you Katie, you are always so helpful ❤️
Id be really interested on seeing a video about Instagram algorithm and how to grow on social media!
