I didn't know that, that's awesome! Having Quasimodo be deaf like he is in the book is one of the main things I want from the remake even though I know they're not going to because they'll think it's too "complicated" or "kids won't get it." 🙄 But seriously, there's SO much potential there. A lot of times the deaf were assumed to automatically be intellectually disabled, so maybe they could explore the frustration that causes and have him latch on to Esmerelda cause she's the only one who doesn't treat him like a child. Maybe we can see them grow closer as communicating in alternative ways becomes more natural. Also there are literally no deaf characters anywhere accept for deaf historical figures and the odd indie film specifically about being deaf, it's so silly

As much as I wished to see the scrapped version of kingdom of the sun which showed more of the historical incan symbolism and was layering more into the story, I'd love to see it, but ANIMATED if Disney had the chance.
A liveaction wouldn't be so comedic if it weren't for the exaggerated bits of the facial expressions, specially Llama Kuzco. Seriously, A CGI version of a Llama speaking? I wouldn't like to see it at all and would be hella scary. So in my sincere opinion, I don't really want Disney to touch that movie which thankfully over the years is getting more praise.
Plus, a sequel is what I really wished to see, what other adventures would be happening between Kuzco being now a more fair emperor with Pacha by his side. (Excluding Kronk's movie and the terrible tv series)

I find the main problem with many live action Disney remakes is that they are often shot-for-shot recreations. They don't do anything new. I don't want to go see The Little Mermaid, because to my mind, I've already seen it. That said, my favorite retelling of The Little Mermaid is a Chinese movie just called "The Mermaid." It takes place in modern times where the "prince" is a CEO, and the mermaid is attempting to assassinate him for polluting her home.

    • @someonerandom8552
      @someonerandom8552 Год назад +4

      This exactly!!
I’m of the opinion that Disney’s identity holds the live action remakes hostage and fails to allow them to “breathe” as actual remakes.
For the most part. You could argue Cruella and Maleficent were allowed a bit more leeway in that regard.
A remake can work if you’re willing to take artistic license and experiment with your interpretation of the source material. I can understand Disney drawing lines in the sand with their properties. I get that.
But ultimately I always felt like the producers and directors were merely hired to see what the animated movies would look like in live action and/or CGI and nothing else. With them not really allowed to explore the source material they were hired to adapt. Either the original fairytale/story or just the Disney version itself.
That said, I’ve heard good things about Halle’s singing in the Little Mermaid. That alone gives it a star from me. Like if you’re going to remake musicals, hire actors who can sing. Or at least get pros to dub them, damn!

Treasure Planet should've been on this list. The only live-action space projects that Disney is focusing on now are either films and TV shows for the MCU or Star Wars for Disney+. The first one was severly underrated and is deserving of a second chance in live-action. The animation and cast were great. I can see this being Disney's next sci-fi hit outside of the two franchises. I liked the idea of The Hunchback of Notre Dame have a cast of unknowns. I recently read the book treasure island, then I watched treasure planet. It is my favorite adaptation ever. I think it was adapted for film as well as Lord of the Rings was, but I like it better. They changed just what they needed to make the story work for a short runtime space movie, while somehow adding more to the relationship between Jim and Long John Silver, and Jim's personality in general. There is one tiny exception being Ben Gunn became too annoying in the animation rather than being a somewhat tragic character. Other than that small change, I dont know what could be improved on to justify a live action remake.

It’s also perfect to catch that pirate nostalgia without milking the already dry Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. I wouldn’t expand on the fate of Jim’s father though, the meaning behind his character and the absence of is already felt well enough for what the film needs from it and would infringe on the role Silver plays for Jim emotionally.

Sweeping flames were used as transitions between scenes of destruction. Michael Peraza, Jr. and the artists wanted a contrast to the peace and quiet of Taran's farm life.

I actually did a production of Hunchback back in 2017 and I totally agree with you: the staged musical feels like a great balance between the music and story of the Disney film and the gritty darkness of the Victor Hugo Novel, even adding depth to the characters, including why Frollo hates gypsies so much (his brother Jehan fell in love with one, but got excommunicated and eventually died from disease after his son, who is Quasimodo, is born. This also adds more depth to Frollo because Quasi isn’t just an orphan, he’s Frollo’s flesh and blood nephew). There’s also a nice touch where Quasi is deaf from ringing the bells and can only read lips, having trouble speaking but talks and sings beautifully in his head. And it doesn’t hold back either and is very dark: Quasi throws a vat of molten metal onto soldiers killing them, Frollo is so dedicated to his faith that he flogs himself during hellfire with the gashes on his back being shown (at least in our production), and like Doug mentioned, Esmerelda actually dies and Quasi recites the ending of the novel where he literally died from grief holding Esmerelda and they were discovered as skeletons years later in a crypt. Frollo’s death is also a lot more emotional, since he doesn’t attempt to kill Quasi but tries to console him about Esmerelda, talking about how he loved his brother before Quasi throws him off the balcony. It’s a very emotional show, I’d dare say it improves upon the Disney source.
However, I have no doubt in my mind with their recent stints, Disney will without a doubt fuck it up, make the emphasis of the gypsies be about racism or something, have Esmerelda be the one to save Quasi despite the fact she was already a badass femme fatale, and make Phoebus seem like a dingus and Clopin a creep (at least more than he already was). Disney’s mentality very much seems to be “if it ain’t broke, break it beyond recognition” due to brand recognition and people going to watch it anyways…if you’re going to reboot or remake something, it shouldn’t just be a one to one remake; it should either expand or improve upon the source, not just give cheap reasons to be more “modern.”

Taran is such a compelling character in the book; we really see him grow and learn as a person. Eilonwy can be a bit air-headish at times, but she's still very likable as a character and even funny at times. Gurgi, I'm not even kidding, is one of my favorite things in the books. He grows from a cowardly, selfish creature to one of the bravest and most loyal friends in the book. The themes are also really grown up, even working a prophecy in without it feeling like it is forcing the characters along a specific way. The stories are entirely character driven, and as a big time fantasy fan, I am BEGGING Disney to give it another shot. Heck, if they do a good job, you could make it into a movie series; we know they like making easy money and franchising. Do this well and this could be the next Lord of the Rings!

The likeness of Panchito was also painted as nose art on an American bomber airplane, a North American B-25 Mitchell. Taran definitely grows out of his glorious warrior mindset when he comes to realize the sacrifices and becomes a wise leader. Eilonwy’s unique speech patterns are very enjoyable, Fflewdder is braver while still being endearingly silly, the lore gives the world a more defined identity, and the supporting cast and villains round out the themes and work off the main cast quite well. Your mileage may vary on the ending explanation of a ‘kinda sorta prophecy’ but I think it’s clever enough to read into and makes Taran’s entire arc work. The Chronicles of Prydain are a more digestible Lord of the Rings but I swear that’s a good thing.

Regarding why Tiana was turned into a frog in Princess & the Frog, you clearly missed the reason why if you think it was a questionable decision. See, most people mistakenly think that Princess & the Frog is a loose adaptation of the Frog Prince but given a roaring 20's Louisiana reskin, It was not. It was a combination of Frog King (which is actually what frog prince should be called in English) and Frog Princess- given a roaring 20's Louisiana reskin. Believe it or not, those are two completely separate fairytales that have the same premise of a monarch being turned into a frog. The former was about bratty princess honoring an unappealing commitment to a frog who helped her, the latter is about a prince learning to do things himself and appreciate hard work with the help of a frog who pushed him in the right direction rather than always making others do things for him. The film seems to mostly take influence from the latter. By asking for Tiana to not be turned into a frog, you're asking for the story of the frog princess to never have a princess frog.

Because unlike a lot of Disney animated films there weren't any necessary fantasy elements; Mushu and the spirits of the ancestors, while fun characters, were never necessary; you could easily write them out of the story and lose absolutely nothing. Basically all Disney had to do was make the story about a woman in ancient China breaking the law to protect her father by going to war in his stead and ultimately becoming a hero in the process.
In other words, I have no idea how Disney managed to fuck this one up. All they had to do was literally retell the story with no magic, maybe some improved character writing and unique scenes to keep it more fresh, and they would've had a perfect remake.

Here's my rewrite idea for Brave based on Critic's idea of more witches.
There's a Celtic goddess known as The Morrigan which is three goddesses into one - the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone. What if the witch in the movie was a member of a coven called The Morrigan, or the Weird Witch Sisters as Merida would call them, and she was the Crone. And the other two, the Maiden and the Mother were obstacles that Merida and Elinor encountered who taught them life lessons.
So after returning to the Crone Witch's cottage to see if she can lift the spell, Merida and Elinor find out where the other two witches are (maybe a map or a woodcarving?) and decide to go ask one of them to lift the spell.
Merida of course not wanting to go ask another Mother for help opts for the Maiden/Child, thinking she can get her to help since she's also a kid. So they arrive at an abandoned castle that's wildly overgrown in plants and flowers and has a large collection of the Wisps (like the Maiden is their queen). There they find the Maiden Witch (who I'm imagining like Aislin from Secret of Kells but with flaming red hair like Merida's, albeit actually on fire) and ask her for her aid. The Maiden Witch is too wild and carefree and doesn't take the situation seriously, wanting to just do her own thing (she's a dark reflection of Merida's want for freedom and adventure), and each time they ask the Maiden's hair gets more aflame as she gets angrier and angrier at them. Eventually Merida steps up to her and tells her to stop being so childish (or something, essentially Merida learns that just wanting freedom and no responsibilities isn't good through scolding the Maiden). The Maiden then bursts in flame and disappears, but not before telling them to go ask the Mother. As Merida and Elinor leave, the Maiden can be seen watching them, her hair a lot less a wild flame as her lesson to Merida's been taught.
Next we have the river scene and Elinor momentarily going full bear before the mother and daughter duo reach the castle of the Mother Witch, which is pristine and clean and orderly, not a pebble out of place. Don't know what magical creatures would live here, maybe goblins or gargoyles? Anyway they meet the Mother Witch, who's ordering around her servants to prepare for a banquet and scolding them for the slightest imperfection (she's a dark reflection of Elinor's overly controlling nature). When the Merida and Elinor ask for the Mother's aid in lifting the spell they are instead offered (ordered) to join her for the banquet (the Mother Witch grant's Elinor the ability to speak at the table). Since Merida couldn't get the Maiden to lift the spell, Elinor decides to take lead. But each time they try to ask politely the Mother cuts them off for some slight imperfection or mistake, so much so that Elinor eventually loses it and demands the Mother to help (essentially, Elinor learns that you don't have to be prim and proper all the time by yelling at the Mother). The Mother orders her servants to chase them out and we get a good action scene with Merida firing her arrows while Elinor swats at them with her claws as the two escape. After the two escape, the Mother watches them being less controlling as her lesson was taught.
After that Merida and Elinor find themselves lost in the fog and are led by the Wisps to the fourth castle of Mor'du. (By the way, the castles of the Maiden and Mother are two of the other brothers castles from the Origins of Mor'du special, with DunBroch being the fourth). And then we'd proceed with the rest of the movie as is, with a last shot of the Weird Witch Sisters at the end.
    Whatcha think?!

The Princess and the Frog isn't based on the fairytale The Frog Prince, it's based on the children's novel The Frog Princess by E.D. Baker. The whole plot of the book is it's a twist on the fairytale where the curse backfired and turned the princess into a frog. Disney liked this approach, so they got the rights to the book and changed everything except that basic concept. That was the whole point of the story they wanted to tell.

I was privileged enough to be able to attend the stage production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame at the Music Circus in Sacramento (a 360 stage, for those who aren't familiar) in 2015 or 2016. To this day, it remains one of my favorite productions of all time. What was really amazing about that particular production, though, was that the actor playing Quasimodo was actually deaf, which lent so much authenticity to the acting, as Quasimodo in the book was also deaf from ringing the loud bells all his life. The even incorporated lots of sign language into the acting. He was unable to sing his parts, so they had a member of the chorus, dressed as a gargoyle, mirror him and sing for him. It was magical to watch the two of them interact, and you could tell the tremendous amount of time and effort they put into spending time with each other and "becoming" each other.

Great list, but Treasure Planet gets my number 1 spot. Such an underrated gem that would be sooo cool in live action
