These videos are absolutely incredible! As someone who grew up painting pre-youtube, with only the Eavy Metal box art to go on, watching how it's done by one of the team is a borderline religious experience haha.
I really like how your videos really demystify the process by which such great results are achieved. It doesn't make it easy but it's something I can understand and therefore work towards. I wouldn't paint an army like this (too long) but I would use this on a display piece (I'm actually working on a Lord of Plagues using this scheme).
Absolutely perfect. thanks a lot. one of the best, didactic, well made paint tutorial on the whole internet man. thanks a lot to share this with us. Hop, patreon support.
Holy brushcontrol! Here I am, a mere mortal, just learned to use the side of the brush to edge-highlight. @InfernalBrush hold my beer, and proceeds to highlight everything with the brushtip! 🤩
There it is baby! I have been checking your channel twice a day for a week now. Ayyyy. I just bought an airbrush and a Death Guard army, so the timing couldn't be better.
Still smashing it on YT Mr Pez! Great video, helpful to see how the gold was done in addition to the armour as I can use that on a few of my own minis! :D
Mate you've quickly become my go to for painting advice. I run Orks and getting the new kit just to paint thanks to your snagga boy vid. Will you ever do a vid on large scale metals like the new warboss in mega armour? Cheers for all the content!
Ive juwt purchased this model off of ebay and im gunna challenge my to try and replicate the box art using your tutorial. Ill probably fail but it'll be good fun
My guy love your videos I would love to see your take on alternative painting schemes for all the armies your videos are super inspirational on furthering my own painting skills ie as a example frozen death guard evey metal/ grim dark
Thanks for the video! I’m always amazed by how neat and clean you can paint! Mind me asking what brush you use, I like the look of the shorter more triangular brush end, reminds me of the army painter brushes and I love their shape but they’re synthetic and I haven’t found natural hair in the same sort of shape.
Yes so those stumpy ones are the W&N Series 7 "Miniature" , they are shorter and have a nice point for edge highlights but they might take a bit of using before the brush tip is broken in. My advice is to buy a size larger than you would usually. I think It was a normal 00 and a miniature 1 I use mostly for the highlights here.
@@InfernalBrush ah thanks! Come to think of it they may be similar to Artis Opus series M, but The one Artis Opus brush I did try didn’t have a nice tip at all (was the S range).
another amazing tutorial!! have to ask: it seems like 40k is your specialty but is there any plan at tackling one of the AOS Gloomspite Gitz troggs anytime soon? the rockguts boxart skin in particular has always really amazed me and id love to see your take on it!
Thank you bethbee, I would love to do some AoS and have some plans for it in the near future. Most of the videos at the moment have been centred around either commission work and polls or new releases. I am looking at ways to increase the amount of videos I can put out so hopefully AoS is soon and I will note down your suggestion. I love orks and goblins in general so I would love to do more things on this kind of topic. Thanks for watching!
After painting so many death guard all of a sudden I feel like skipping the glaze back to dgg step is a big difference in table pop. The highlight glaze is so powerful with the DGG and Ogryn on the green, it makes the army.
Amazing job as always! Do you know anything about how they painted harlequins? I mean, obviously, how did they freehand the diamond pattern in order to repeat it all over, thank you so much! Keep up the good work!
Thank you! I only painted one model for the Harlequins - the death jester so I avoided having to do too much freehand! The way I would approach the diamonds is to draw a grid across the whole area first and then fill in every other diamond with the second colour and then cut back into it and tidy with the base coat. Sadly I don't think there's any quick methods to do it like the studio ones, its just a lot of patience and brush control. Maybe I will be able to make a video on it one day.
8:22 Based on what I see on the model and palet I am guessing you used Gore Grunta Fur instead of Wildwood. Wildwood is pretty desaturated and you were looking for something rich.
Thank you! I don't find that videos do too well in multiple parts on RUclips so I will likely just keep that on the Patreon (available to all tiers) when its done.
Simply amazing! If you don't mind, I recently started the hobby and wanted to how do you later assemble the figure since you're using sub-assembly for painting. Do you use super glue or scrape off the paint somehow and later just glue them?
Hello. I carefully drill into an unseen area with a hobby drill or "pin vice" with a 0.8 or 1mm drill bit. I cut a paperclip to size and push this into the hole and then into a champagne cork. If I use superglue then I use a tiny amount just to hold the paperclip in place. Then once the part is painted you can glue as normal with superglue or plastic glue. Plastic glue should melt through the primer (as I only a apply a thin layer of primer) if the primer is thick you can scratch the contact area slightly
I have a question - the studio obviously gives us a different paint guide and paint scheme to what is used here? Do they often follow the paints they give us or is that completely different?
If you are referring to the paint guide on the back of the box it is just a rough approximation and not really intended to match the box cover completely. I think firstly because it would include far too many paints to list there. Secondly because the studio painters are painting to (generally speaking) a higher level than the majority of hobbyists and that might mean not being limited by following a strict formula the way that citadel promotes their products to be used i.e. base >shade > layer etc.
Amazing tutorial man thank you so much! What brush do you use for the shading of the armour at the start? Winsor and Newton series 7 size 1 just the bigger tip not the short tip one?
This was an amazing tutorial, the best one I have seen by far! I had one question tho. With the Vallejo model air silver I get this grey medium separating from it after a while. Is there any way you deal with it, if you know what I mean that is?
Hmm I can't say I've had that problem, I'm hoping they haven't changed the recipe now. I have that issue with the Vallejo Metal Colours like Dark Aluminium but not the ones in the droppers. I would say give it a good mix but you have probably tried that, so not too sure.
@@InfernalBrush I have tried shaking it a lot, and when I pour it, it looks ok for a bit and then kinda separates which sucks but what can you do. Thanks anyway!
Just a question to help please the RUclips algorithm, but if you didn’t have to use Athonian Camoshade, what paint would you use to shade? Just death world forest?
Awesome tutorial. Trying to replicate this right now. One question though: your Athonian Camoshade looks a bit brownish over the death guard green basecoat, is that because of the addition of deathworld forest? Or is that just the lighting/camera?
Working through this toturial myself I had the same concern, but found that upon drying, the thicker sections of the camoshade did start to look this beautiful transitional brown. Really pleased with results so far. Slow gradual application of the shade has got me close here, and has me excited for the next bits.
Hi.dallasraine. I am desperate to try this recipe but always had difficulty at the beginning, I don’t have a air brush so I applied dg green as base coat under black primer, however the result looks completely different, the color in the video appears to be way more saturated and green. Since you have already got to the second step which is glazing with Athenian camoshade, can you please tell me what you did for the first step? Thank you for your time, and this might be a little too late, but happy thanksgiving!
After seeing another video I believe Death Guard Green is a name change for Deathworld Forest. So, the actual boxart uses 50% Death Guard Green and 50% Nurgling Green? That makes sense as they look quite bright.
Deathguard Green was only released after the Deathguard were released. Deathworld forest is still available now. The original mix that we used was 50/50 Deathworld Forest and Nurgling Green. Hope this helps.
How is the model attached to his handle? Waiting for my handle with puddy to arrive, since I’ve seen a lot of painters use that combo. I’ve never seen this way though, is it pinned?
