Macro Mode? Yay or nay? Also, does the lens look better on SONY or S1H? GO
It's always fun to experiment, so yay ?
Best look I'm biased so Sony.
With that said, Pentacon 50 on Sony 😍
It’s always worth the risk to do more things on your lens. So YAY 😃
Fujifilm, of course))
Definitely yay and definitely on sony 😁
Looks better on Sony, totally
I have this lens. I use it for landscape photography. If you set the aperture to f8 or f11 it becomes very sharp. It is particularly good for shooting trees because it has virtually no chromatic abberation. Darker shapes against bright sky remain very clean. It is exceptionally good for black and white photography or where colours are more subdued. A downside is that it dramatically changes look as you change aperture including colour so I think colour is it's weak point. Unfortunately it is quite expensive now. I have a lot of the older preset or auto Takumar lenses from the 1950s into 60s and they are all very good. The 200mm f3.5 preset is one of my favourite lenses ever.
Those “macro mode” photos are downright gorgeous! Awesome job finding that out! I say worth the risk!
giddiup! we've got a risk taker here, right here!
Okay Buddy, hear my word: that lens would look the wery best on my Pentax body ;)
Especially a silver Pentax body like my K-3 Mark III :)
I really enjoy your reviews, so well presented. You had me the minute you mentioned this lens had a secret. I love this classic glass, keep up the good work
Now reverse that front element and reassemble ;)
Awesome as always, thanks Mark!
Holy crap those "macro" photos are insane! Definitely gonna have to keep an eye out for that lens.
Great pics. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching
I never thought of this! I did flip the front element on a mir 1-b a long time ago. I gotta try this on that lens next time.
Hola, te veo desde España. Me gusta tu trabajo, te descubrí porque soy un gran amante de los Takumar y lentes vintage. Yo tambien soy poseedor del Takumar 35mm f2.3.
Definitely ready for Hollywood. interesting review!
Gracias por el video 😉
Great video, been looking at any Takumars these days. Sony's look good with any vintage lens hanging off it.
That'll be awesome for my Komodo! Much appreciated.
Cool feature!
It's worth all the risks and another in depth review ..Loved this lens ... Always enjoying this amazing Show .Peace
Thanks Barbirou!
Great video as usual...
But because of you, I'll have to explain to my wife that I must invest in yet another Takumar...
She complains I have too many already...
(Cue the F-Stop bag containing a 6D Mk2 and... a 50/1.4, a 135/3.5, a 135/2.5, a 200/3.5...)
Keep up the great work.
Beautiful video. Could you screw a UV or ND filter on it using those threads?
thats a really cool feature, that exposed element is a bit too scary for me! I'll take some macro tubes pls
Reminds me of the once very common "convertible" lenses.
In the late 19th/early 20th many camera lenses were fully symmetrical designs, with the aperture (and later leaf shutter) between the 2 groups.
For most of them you could take off the front element by design, and get like a 240/11 instead of a 135/6.8. My 9x12 glass plate camera has one of those.
It went quickly out of favour though, since for once newer lens designs weren't symmetrical anymore and also the quality decline is quite substential, so as soon you don't do only contact prints, cropping and enlarging negatives taken with the standard lens yielded better results than the "telephoto mode".
Looks good.
Wow! Jaws down!!! That was amazing…. It looks pretty good on the Sony. Thanks man
Ya quite surprising. I guess a lot of the usefulness of this depends on the condition of that lens. But if it works, it works well. Thanks for stopping by mate.
I broke the front element of a Minolta Rokkor 35mm f2.8 while cleaning it. Accidentaly turned it into a macro lens that works pretty well. I'd use this Takumar for sure.
Macro Mode: that is really nice ;)
and it looks definitely better on the Sony :)
Original Pentax SV. Beautiful & classic looking, the silver body with black leather make it a best one accompany with takumar 35/2.3.
Macro mode worth it! And that Sony takes the cake on looks with that lens
Would suit an M4/3 body much better. Send it over and I'll stick it on my EM1 MkII. Nice macro work. I went the opposite direction and hooked up a small enlarger lens to an extension tube. Close focus of 4" on the 50mm and 75mm F/3.5 lenses. Those things are smaller than a 46mm lens cap in diameter and half the height of a AA battery. Great fun.
Now I'll have to try this with my Schneider kreuznach 35mm f2.8. I realized that the front element comes off accidentally earlier this year while experimenting with an anamorphic adapter, briefly panicked, and reassembled it
Great vid Mark.
I have to ad this lens to my small collection. This lens would look so much better on my Canon 5DSR because of the almost non visible m42 adapter
yay on the adapter being mostly hidden. I love that EOS to M42, tiny little screw mount!
man I love your vids, editing, color, story and all....would love to see a series on lenses under $100 if thats possible. I use a T7i right now and love to play with the vintage lenses as therapy! lol
Putting this in bank mate. Nee year content let’s go
@@MarkHoltze !!!ty!
I have this baby but haven't shot it yet. I'm looking forward to it.
Let me know what you think when you do!
nice! 🔥
Cool
I got this lens and it's work!! more funny
This is good lens for landscape, portrait and macro. Thanks you for a good new info 😉.
Glad you like it!
I will probably get it for my xpro3.
Even if I could find one of these, I don’t have enough organs to sell in order to fund it.
Highly enjoyable video presentation as always. I hunted down my 300/f4 on the strength of your review.
I’m looking forward to your next project.
ya the price of this one is pretty high given it's "scarcity"....definitely not a value lens and more of a weird lens. ;)
That's a cool hack. I think it would look even better on my Fuji. 🛑 with the 300 f4, I already have a 300 4
Everything looks best on a fujifilm as they say ;)
The Sony of course! Because I am a Sony user. Back to the secret trick. On the Sony select APS-C Capture ON. Now you are in crop sensor mode magnify by 1.6 I think?
Anyway, I have been selecting crop sensor on my A7M2 with my Tamron SP 90mm 2.5 macro lens. New old lens to me. Still Trying to get the subject in focus. It is even harder with the 2x multiplier on. For now no 2x multiplier that make the lens 1:1. This lens is sharp in the center. And the crop mode helps there. You just can not beat old glass for the price!
sony crop is like 1.52 i believe. 1.6 is like pocket 6k super 35 IF i'm not mistaken...i might be mistaken lol...
As far as I know these early wide angle lenses were using "normal" lens design with wide angle converter added to the front (similar to those you can buy today for video cameras etc.), thus not such a great performance in the corners compared to newer lenses. I suppose by unscrewing the front element you simply change the focal length and get the narrower field of view, so you get bigger magnification.
Nice little tweak there! Have you tried reversing the front element while you were at it?
Not yet!
Love your edits and these lenses too
Great video. Im also a takumar fanboy
Same here
The word you pronounced genuinely is very interesting
Ya I’ve never said but like that before...not sure why I did here....
Neato!
that's what I thought! :)
@@MarkHoltze not sure if I’m brave enough to shoot with it outside with the front element off!
That intro! :D
Couldn’t help it 😂
Looks better on Sony for sure!
Mark
I have the Auto Takumar 35mm 3.5 M42 lens a small good lens
that's a fantastic lens mate!
Mount it on a Canon M series. It would look GREAT on that body size.
Go for it what's the risk?
Cant believe i didnt know this and i had this damn lens, and sold it 😥😩
Is it an M42 mount?
M42 yes.
Excellent! It looks the best on the Canon Eos R 😊
Which camera does this lens look better on? Yes I would agree it looks better on the Sony and I would agree that I am shallow too and worry about such things.............I just cannot help myself. (Well I AM a photographer and so should worry about aesthetics). I find that most lenses with a skinny body look kind of "Naff" as the British say (British slang for worthless, tacky, unfashionable) when adapted as most adapters seem to be designed for lenses with a larger girth. So most adapters (and especially most M42 adapters for some reason) likewise have a rather larger body diameter. This means that a lens like this one looks a little weird sitting on the end of that kind of adapter. (Kind of like a skinny girl with a huge "badonkadonk" - according to the Urban Dictionary "an extremely curvaceous female behind. Women who possess this feature usually have a small waist that violently explodes into a round and juicy posterior") Hmmm OK but not to my aesthetic taste. In lenses I mean - I thought I should clarify that before get into more trouble than undoubtedly I already am. :^)
But in this case there is a quite good alternative. I dumped my previous M42 to Sony adapter and instead bought a K and F concept "Pro" adapter (a redesigned line of adapters that this firm has just recently placed on the market). The nice thing about this newly redesigned adapter is that not only is it well built but that the end of the adapter cylinder is kind of chamfered down to a smaller size so a smaller diameter lens looks less out of place when mounted on it. I suspect this design feature is deliberately chosen for just this situation. And because the rest of the adapter's body has a "normal" larger diameter, a larger diameter lens also looks good too. I have become a fan of this "Pro" range and now how them for several lens systems. A typical ad for them follows so you can see what I am talking about (neither the seller nor the product has any connection to me - as I say I am just a fan of good product design and this one has it in my view - especially for lenses like this one). PS I also have this lens and its excellent. They say it is based on an Angénieux design (or did you say this Mark in your earlier video?).

So that makes a lens a little bit appealing is this an m42 mount....
M42 yes.
Awesome, time for me to order one just picked a leica cl and an m42 mount... this could be quite a combo
Center sharpness is nice but it does get weird on the edges. Might look it up if you haven’t driven the prices up already. Damn you…..!!! LOL
Some call that “character” 😆 yes most likely due to the rays not being properly corrected by that retro focal front element. Macro tends to be very center specific so I think in this case it only adds to the image vs taking anything away. It is highly subjective though and I appreciate a case for both arguments :)
I always like secrets
need to have a TELL ALL ;)
Isn't there something about turning the front element backwards too? ruclips.net/video/Fr85GxIRgZE/видео.html @4min for reference
You can invert it but it’s missing the threads to mount it.
I forgot to mention, the Sony for sure.
noted, not one person has said the S1H as of yet lol.
Lies, you wanted to make a second video because you love it.... lol Looks better on my D850.... send it over!!!!
@@MarkHoltze Dude, your vids are awesome and you're not to shabby yourself ... Have a great day from your TOP fan in Montreal... lol
Pretty much any lens looks better on a Sony. And I think it's due to the retro inspired design, boxy yet modern.
this lens would look best on MY Sigma FPL :) so if you want to get rid of it....
How do you like the FPL?
@@MarkHoltze awesome, very small and 61mp. Sure way not perfect by any means, but perfect for me. I have around 10 vintage lenses coming for it and the Sigma SD Quattro :)
I think it looks better on the Canon 6D mark ii. And Nay, too risky.
the cut aways with the glitched voice are kinda cute but really make me cringe :/
Seems like a bit of a contradiction 😂 but thanks for the feedback. How did you like the images because that was more the point of the video vs creative decisions and sound design. ✊
@@MarkHoltze Some of the images were awesome. Regarding the lens, are you sure this is marketed as macro? I recall another director (dont remember which) who modified his lenses by adding or removing the first element to achieve a vignette and soft focus around the center. Actually now that i think about it I think it was Roger Deakins. I think he added the front element from a wider lens to a tighter lens to achieve the effect. Maybe it has some correlation, I noticed some pictures appeared very distorted and soft around the center.
