The Requiem Leitmotif use in ORDER is genuinely one of if not the best pieces of gaming OST i’ve ever seen. It so perfectly and heart-wrenchingly conveys the despair and pain Minos experienced. His work to build a thriving society, and how it was all torn down by the self-righteous forces of Heaven in the name of a God who had abandoned them all. His love for his people, and the agony of failing them, knowing that with his death their torment would resume. And I believe that he knows that his struggle is in vain, yet still he fights desperately, in some small hope that he might be able to save his people from the wrath of the Heavens, and from that of the machines. ORDER cannot be truly listened to and comprehended fully without knowing Minos’ story, and I think that is absolutely to it’s benefit. Having a track like this that at a surface-level glance makes you feel powerful and grand, but when understood and truly *listened* to makes you realize the sheer weight of your actions, and the fact that in the end, you are a villian and a ruthless murderer, worse than any opponent you ever face in ULTRAKILL. I love WAR, and I think Sisyphus’ fight is great, but neither the track, fight or character can stand in the face of Minos’ fight and all else. WAR has the same initial effect of making you feel empowered, but it fails to go as deep as ORDER does. Lust’s motifs simply come together in ORDER better than Greed’s ever could. Not only that, but Sisyphus’ character and story just aren’t as emotional and compelling as Minos’. Sisyphus was a man solely motivated by greed and spite, battling against Heaven’s wrath through sheer force. Minos, however, refused to enact violence, and peacefully guided his people towards a future, to have a thriving, prosperous (after?)life. Even when confronted by the unfaltering forces of Heaven, he refuses to fight, and instead tries in vain to negotiate with Gabriel, in the end giving his very life for his people. And then, his becoming of a Prime Soul, a final, last-ditch effort to bring “salvation from this cold, dark, world” to his people. Never once was he motivated by a desire to save himself or to gain anything of his own- he was already the Judge of Hell, he would gain nothing from his defection- and yet he chose, in his fervent belief in the innocence of those who love, to abandon the existence he knew in order to bring peace and salvation to them. He ruled not for fame, for his benefit, or any other earthly motive, but purely for the sake of the humanity that which he loved so dearly. I only wish that Minos’ story could’ve ended differently, rather than being struck down by the player. He was the most meritous, honorable and innocent man we encounter in ULTRAKILL, and he deserved an existence fit for a king.
I know people are mostly gushing about order and altars of apostasy (as they should) but man. Death of god's will gives me chills every time I hear it because of the sheer rage and desperation in it, like Gabriel's hatred is actively tearing him apart....chef kiss
