Dean Kain was not better than Reeves. The genius of the Reeves portrayal, that no one else could match, is that he made Superman and Clark look like two COMPLETELY different people. There isn't a single other actor of Superman that managed to do this. We are required to give total suspension of disbelief that a pair of glasses is a sufficient disguise.
@@cc3775 It's all about the acting. Reeves put a lot of effort to change his voice, to hunch when walking (hiding his height), to wear clothing that covers his physique, and to act in a very meek/bumbling manner. All that stuff has an effect in making a person see Superman and Clark as two seperate people. No other actor put in that level of work. Hell, I haven't seen that level of effort from the animations, and I don't think the comics have ever really put that much effort in either. Reeve did it best. You can have your favorites but he was the only one that could genuinly make the audience think that this could legit be two people.

I don't know why people are baffled. Anyone familiar with Gunn knows he was a bad choice. He's an irreverent person and Clark is the opposites of that. Kal El was raised by John and Martha with middle America values. Those values have respect at their core. Irreverent people can't accurately adapt that. Plus, Gunn has said before that he prefers adapting lesser known characters because it frees him up to do more of what he likes. The day WB hired him was the day they put DC live actions movies 6 feet under. They were on life support as it is, this was their last chance. They won't get another for a while after this reboot universe fails.

I like the no-kill rule w/Superman. For me, the biggest disappointment in Man of Steel was Snyder forcing Supes to break his no-kill rule in the first movie. I think this movie plot has great potential, except for one thing, they are totally setting up Lex Luther as a Trump parody. And that will ruin the entire movie for me. I'm still waiting for LL to be done right in live action, not done wrong in a new way.
I had a much bigger issue with Clark letting Jonathan die than killing Zod, myself. If they'd followed up with killing Zod at all with Clark carrying the guilt of what he had to do, it might have been interesting, but they never did anything with it in a sequel. Even in Man of Steel, it wasn't really given any weight as the very next scene is Superman destroying the drone and the "I just think he's kinda hot" gag. They needed one more scene of Superman and Lois coming out of the station to reflect on both Zod's death and the destruction in Metropolis imo. Didn't have to be much, but just something to give that stuff a little more emotional weight instead of the jarring cut to the destroyed drone scene.
That's such a dumb thing to really say Because Superman never had no kill rule Yes he will save people but if he has to he will kill the save people and have you not ready to become book he has killed villains and creatures to save people's lives You know what I'm saying but it's only at last resort the whole point of the Snyder thing is that this is Superman first time fighting something that he can't just easily stop That was the lesson the lesson was learned that killing and knowing when to kill and when to be ready to save people and went to sacrifice everybody keeps ignoring the complexities of what Superman is because everybody wants him to be already Superman That's not how that works Superman then just started out as Superman if you read original Superman stuff Superman was a jerk honestly before he was turned into the big blue Boy scout everybody love so much You know what I'm saying There are levels to these characters and it just seems like everybody is stuck in one person's performance of a character that they can never see past that performance You have to look past what you known to see Christopher Reeve Superman as or just sea Superman in general because most people who say this don't even read Superman comic books but they love Superman but they only watch the Christopher Reed movies in the DC animated Superman so you wouldn't know how he evolved and changed you know
I'm against the no-kill rule because it makes no sense in Superman's line of work and it makes him out to be selfish and childish. What's more important to him, protecting innocent lives in immediate, catastrophic danger or feeling good about his moral self-image? A Superman who cares more about feeling good about himself is no hero at all. A Superman who does what's necessary to protect the innocent, even if he feels remorse and regret over it, is a hero I would respect and look up to.

*James Gunn has said he is bring back, "Truth, Justice, & the American Way!"* If James Gunn does this he'll have my respect ... but doesn't mean this movie wil be good.
James Gunn's plan for Superman in modern day is to have people around him consider Superman --THE MOST POWERFUL HERO IN DC COMICS...to be a dork that no one takes seriously. So these are the choices that Hollywood gives Superman fans: MAN OF STEEL where Superman is portrayed as an EMO outcast who doesn't know if humanity is worth saving or not...or SUPERMAN LEGACY where he's portrayed as an out of touch dork that people criticize or snicker at behind his back. HOLLYWOOD IS RUN BY SATANISTS. PERIOD.
I like the idea of Luthor being an evil Tony Stark. Have him being a weapons manufacter as well as a profiteer. But aside from that, if that's really the plot then it's weak AF.
This movie will make almost as much as the average lemonade stand. The character is no longer culturally relevant and associated with failure and bad movies.
Have you seen pictures of Christopher Reeve’s son lately? He looks more like Superman than his dad did. I wonder why they never considered using him in the role?
He might not be able to act...he does look good, looks like his father, but yea he might not have the acting chops. But that would be amazing to announce Chris Reeves son as Superman in a new movie, that would be good hype
William Reeve is 44 years old (and I think is the one you're talking about) and Matthew Reeve is 32 and doesn't look very much like Superman. If it's the former, I think age is definitely a factor even if he has wanted to be considered. He'd be in his mid-50's by the time a third movie was being filmed.
I think Gunn has a capacity to be anti Hollywood agenda and pro traditional Superman while not having to deconstruct Superman. Ultimately Man Of Steel is a deconstructed Superman, just maybe not a liberal deconstructed Superman traditionally associated with deconstructive art, but nonetheless deconstructed. Not every Superhero is compatible with that. Batman is because he's a psychological character. It's not that Zack tried to make Superman dark. It's that he did deconstructive stuff with him that's not necessary. I think Gunn is anti deconstruction. And could do a great job as a result.
That's exactly my feeling too. I mean, when I think about PEACEMAKER, omg that show was both corny and hokey but also genuine and unironically patriotic. James Gunn can give us characters that are self-aware of how anachronistic they seem and somehow that makes them aspirational. BTW: Bizarro FTW! I cannot imagine a more perfect vehicle for James Gunn's special type of ridiculous but truly wrenching characters....laughable and tragic, hilarious and heart breaking. I am sort of expecting for the Bizarro arch to end up stealing the entire movie.
One of the big issues is that these IPs have an entrenched legacy and fan base, so the stakes are always automatically high. Previous story tellers were building the legacy and there was less attention and focus on these characters and stories, so the stakes weren't as high. Doing the same now, is seen as careless and offensive to fans.
Gunn is taking a page from Kingdom Come, which came out at a time heroes were edgy and had no issues killing villains. Considering the amount of people Batman, Ironman, Captain America, and Thor have killed in their movies, this is likely a critique of that. Superman as well killed Zod. Growing up, what made Wolverine such a great character was him resisting killing people. The Punisher and Vigilante killed people, but they weren’t heroes. They were villains.
Because of how much of a mess WBD and DC is in, i am just happy I have films like Man of Steel, BVS, and Zack Snyder's JL. Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill rejuvenated Superman and found a new generation of superman fans that Christopher Reeve couldn't do
I actually think the huge amount of history of this character makes it hard to do a new Superman movie, as his enemies are so well known that its hard to rewrite one of them to be interesting in a movie. Also, superman is so powerful that they have to somewhat lower the stakes, so the special effects don't drive the movie to unprofitability.
No it doesn't. Superman was never "hated by the authorities" in the '30s. He went AFTER corrupt politicians and corporate powerholds. There aren't any scenes of Police or anyone else "hating" Superman. He just fought the system. Now, they had them "hating" him when Grant Morrison tried to redo the 30's concept again in the 2000's. But, no, this has no connection to the Shuster/Siegel character. Facts.
How about we watch the movie and then form opinions? I have complete faith in James. He's an amazing writer and an even better director. The emasculation angle is such a completely horrible take, dude. Face it, this movie will be good.
I was appalled at the leaked set photo of Superman kissing another man on the lips.🤦🏻♂️ We all know about the abrupt comic book series cancellation with the Superman kissing his boyfriend on the lips, because it outraged potential customers, didn’t sell, and thus disappeared like Jimmy Hoffa.
I don’t understand the reasoning about how it “emasculates” Superman. If he’s standing up for his ideals in the face of opposition then that’s incredibly masculine because it takes courage to do so all by itself let alone being challenged. This will depend entirely on how it’s executed. The plot is very thin on substance so there’s lots of room for James Gunn to get us emotionally invested. He’s shown is ability to do that. The Rat Catcher father daughter arc was excellent in suicide squad and he had to operate with VERY limited screen time.
This sounds fine. This sounds like the plot of 1980’s-90’s DC. It introduces bizzarro and luthor as set ups. Jesus Christ. The plot with luthor is straight out of the books. Bizarro is too. Superman not killing in a world of killers works. I’m not sure how this shit is emasculating? Super man is going against the world and taking the Christian high road by not killing?
4:09 Ok I like the fact that Supes has a stance and inspires heros to be moral but it sounds like Gunn's cramming 5 movies into one. JSA, the authority, Supergirl, Lex and Bizzaro?
I do not subscribe to the postmodernist idea that Superman is boring,. The writers are boring if they can't write a good story about or around him with his morals and motto in tact. They just think all that is good and ...ahem... white is 'pale and stale'. You actually need a moral center to write a moral character.
Pro I normally consider you a smart guy but other than supporting the garbage that is Rippaverse the stupidest thing you’ve ever said is Dean Kane over Christopher Reeve
Superman is the most quintessentially heroic superhero, basically a superpowered boy scout. He represents traditional moral values and is a good role model. In other words, he is everything that Hollywood hates. There is no way he'll be represented faithfully and with respect on screen. I'll stick with the first two Christopher Reeve films. I like Henry Cavill as an actor, but his Superman was too dark. I haven't seen Dean Cain.
8:11 professional just means you get payed for it.... By that logic i once dated a professional girlfriend. I believe you meant skilled or quality weighting.
There might be an issue with Ultraman. There's a live scifi-action serries from Japan called Ultraman. So the name might need to be altered for foreign markets to avoid trademark disputes. Otherwise the whole clone thing is probably the only way to introduce modern Bizarro. The no kill rule only makes sense as a means to keep governments from freaking out over superman (cause they can't stop him). Killing would only make people more paranoid and fearfull about Superman. Although I'm pretty sure that was more of a mandated comics code than a rule of conduct. So no hero was ever out to kill. Even if they did nobody ever dies and stays dead in the comics. It almost feels like they are cramming to many plot threads from the late 90's~2010 into a reboot. That was my problem with the Green Lantern.

I can't think of a superhero like that, but there have been several real-life examples, Muhammad Ali, Larry Bird, etc. Of course, it's always amusing to see someone mouth off and then get humiliated, like almost everyone who said they were going to beat Mike Tyson and then ended up on the canvas 30 seconds into the fight.
My son was remarking on how different he looks with just the glasses as we were watching Superman II the other night.

@@ChuckM0503 I agree in all points.

I'm against the no-kill rule because it makes no sense in Superman's line of work and it makes him out to be selfish and childish. What's more important to him, protecting innocent lives in immediate, catastrophic danger or feeling good about his moral self-image? James Gunn's plan for Superman in modern day is to have people around him consider Superman --THE MOST POWERFUL HERO IN DC COMICS...to be a dork that no one takes seriously. So these are the choices that Hollywood gives Superman fans: MAN OF STEEL where Superman is portrayed as an EMO outcast who doesn't know if humanity is worth saving or not...or SUPERMAN LEGACY where he's portrayed as an out of touch dork that people criticize or snicker at behind his back. Stop catastrophizing, guys. Don't let people on the internet ruin the story for you. Watch it in cinemas and decide for yourself.
Yeah. Where is Peacemaker S2?? Superman: no killing, Batman: no guns. These were confused and conflated by the Nolan films.
Let me guess I was right that all the times Gunn said it wasn’t an origin story
It is actually an origin story
Man of Steel was a great superman film
It was good, not great..
Iron man was great!
You either die a laughinstock that can't do SUPERMAN right, or live long enough to see yourself become the next Sony.
Because of how much of a mess WBD and DC is in, i am just happy I have films like Man of Steel, BVS, and Zack Snyder's JL. Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill rejuvenated Superman and found a new generation of superman fans that Christopher Reeve couldn't do
This is exactly what people hated about the snyder universe
This story sound like what people want the Boy Scout, not the Snyder version where it was too dark. Which I loved Man of Steel was great
I actually think the huge amount of history of this character makes it hard to do a new Superman movie, as his enemies are so well known that its hard to rewrite one of them to be interesting in a movie. Also, superman is so powerful that they have to somewhat lower the stakes, so the special effects don't drive the movie to unprofitability.
This is obviously fake. Surprised people believe it.
This sounds like the original Superman comics by Siegal and Shuster were he was hated by authorities and had a bad reputation.
But that seminal Superman is NOT the iconic one. This people really didn't even know what are they doing.
@@DanyTV79 Who gives a shit?
No it doesn't. Superman was never "hated by the authorities" in the '30s. He went AFTER corrupt politicians and corporate powerholds. There aren't any scenes of Police or anyone else "hating" Superman. He just fought the system. Now, they had them "hating" him when Grant Morrison tried to redo the 30's concept again in the 2000's. But, no, this has no connection to the Shuster/Siegel character. Facts.

This plot line is straight out of a late 80’s/ early 90’s Superman comic book series… James Gunn understands superman… read the comics!!!
Gunn should have thought way out of the box while staying inside it at the same time
I don’t understand the reasoning about how it “emasculates” Superman.
Keep the 1930-50’s Midwest values and have Superman face off against Braniac. Done.
This sounds fine. This sounds like the plot of 1980’s-90’s DC. It introduces bizzarro and luthor as set ups. Jesus Christ. The plot with luthor is straight out of the books.

This sounds fire to me
