Slash did leave because of Axl’s nature. Honestly they began heading in different directions musically. Axl got into punk, grunge, nine inch nails, and Slash just wanted to keep making appetite. Axl writes melody and lyrics first and then hands it over to the band to figure out the other instrumental arrangement and Slash would write guitar songs first then hand them to Axl. Neither wanted to do it the other persons way.
The line “D’you wear a black armband when they shot the man who said peace could last forever?” Breaks my heart every time I hear it. It’s about the assassination of Martin Luther King and how people wore black armbands as a sign of being in mourning and also to protest the war. When Axl was little, his mother took him to a protest to hear MLK speak and it had a lasting effect on him.
"You Could Be Mine" GnR did this song for Terminator II. It's excellent! Btw, Slash teamed up with Myles Kennedy (Alterbridge) and released some AMAZING music. My personal favorite is "Ghost" live from Stoke, UK
Check out "Starlight" Acoustic Live Max Session 2010, somewhere in Australia not sure of exact location. After I heard that, I couldn't believe that tune wasn't released that way rather than "Electric".
The opening dialog is from the movie Cool Hand Luke and the part where it says "We practice selective annihilation of mayors and government officials for example to create a vacuum..." is a quote from a Peruvian war general, according to Axl Rose. Great song off of a great album! GnR, as a band, dominated the late 80's and early 90's. They seem to have come out of nowhere and just exploded. I was 17 when Appetite for Destruction was released and was blown about by the grit and power of that album, which still rings true today. I was already a heavy metal fan from Metallica, Megadeath, Anthrax and Slayer... the "big 4" but GnR was different in a whole other way. Kinda like when Nirvana and the grunge sound blew up in the mid 90's.
just found your channel today, watched a dozen vids. Brad hadnt said much in most, now we see him connect with the lyrics and speak wisdom. Love seeing lex letting it out in all the vids while Brad is absorbing it.
This song will never get old and needs to be heard. Whether people realize or acknowledge it, we're fighting our own civil war in our country right now. Brad, your analysis is spot on as always!
7:50 this is the most heartwarming thing I've heard in a long time. Axl and Slash had a very complicated existence together, and still do. And I love that you recognize the innocence and the beauty in their musical relationship.
A perfect example that hard rock isn't just "noise". Also, a perfect song for Brad & Lex... Left-brained for Brad with lyrics that carry a strong message and are easily understandable, and Right-brained for Lex with creative songwriting along with strong musicianship.
A true music lover doesn't get stuck on genre. The symphony of instruments sucks you in like an undertow. Life is so much more beautiful with a soundtrack.
I have told everyone I talk to that you can find good music almost anywhere. If you are listening. I could have as much fun in a blues bar or in a honky tonk as I could in maybe a club in Memphis or Atlanta. I could have as much fun in a mosh pit. Good music reaches out and grabs you. Rock has a special spot in my heart. But so does rap. Country. Gospel. Blues. I love music.
I get it, I get asked all the time "what music do you like/listen to?" my answer is always the same, "I listen to exceptional music, anything that I feel & that moves me. Yeah THAT is music I f@ck with."
@@sutherngirrl7590 this conversation reminds me of the movie August Rush for some reason. If you're not familiar with it, I highly recommend it. It's about how we are all connected by something. That something could definitely be music.
I have always felt that this was one of GNR's best songs. Definitely in the top 3. Like any other track, created by any artist, it speaks a lot of truth, and as far as I know was never played on the radio. If there is truth to the message it will not get pushed to main stream. I may be wrong, but I had a radio on 90% of the time back then and I do not ever recall hearing this played. I found it on the album (sorry - CD). Brad is 100% correct, I also believe that this song will survive the test of time. Humans tend to not be bright enough to learn from the past. We will continue to behave the same, and there will be many more conflicts in the future.
Axl Rose. The man of a thousand voices. He is like a chameleon in his vocals. When I was a teenager I honestly didn;t realize for years that he sang the entire lead vocal on "It's So Easy". I thought that he was sharing vocals with Izzy because his voice sounded so different at times in that song that I couldn't believe it was all Axl singing.
The entire first half of the video I can literally see the wheels in Brad's mind turning. Normally Lex steals the show with her incredible beauty but I was waiting for Brad's commentary this time. He likes to think and this is the perfect song for it.
I've heard the song a million times, but listening to you guys and taking my time I realized it was a rift on the song "When Johnny comes marching home again." Thanks for the heartfelt commentary.
I could feel Brad taking a time to think about the lyrics, it's a timeless theme indeed and make us think a lot about wars and the hate splitting people apart. Lex, it's really magical how Axl and Slash's tone and music fit so well, it blens so good, it's not just a guy playing guitar in an amazing way, it's a guitar talking to the voice of Axl and giving the music the feeling that it needs.
This has always been my favorite GNR song. I also think Brad was absolutely spot on with his opinion about giving up your rights to the government. Great reaction y’all!
My favorite line in the song is "What's so civil about war anyway? Only a few lines into the song and your conversation gets deep. I admire both of your insights.
This song is Timeless! It is speaking volumes right now for sure! Definitely need to check out November Rain it is Epic! Knew Lex would come around, Axel reels you in lol🤟🇺🇸❤
As a 57 year old, I was in my early 20's when GNR hit the scene. Even tho Appetite for Destruction is considered the most influential album of the 80s, the writing chops and musical talent that went into the Illusions' albums have increased ten fold. I firmly believe Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 are GNR's best work and an auditory masterpiece.
The dynamic of GNR is that Axl brings the musicianship and lyrics while Duff and Slash bring that hard rock and edge. They are total Yin and Yang. And that's what made them have conflict with each other. But also combined as a powerful dynamic.
Hell yea Lex! Your reaction at “My hands are tied”.was exactly what I was expecting. Brad you’re absolutely right. Song will never age but we hope it does. Well put bro.
Oooooohhhhh Brad, this one hit you. Man, I love this side of you. Lex, as always, you are so much fun. This is one of my all-time favorites from GNR. There's a big message here, still going on today. I know I am 1.5 years late to the party, lol but I definitely loved the reaction. BTW, I didn't see anyone else mention that Axl is actually rated one of the best singers of all time. His range is insane.
I'd like to add... throughout watching you both during this entire song, I really think you both compliment each other so well. I think... Brad, you keep Lex grounded and cause her to look within to see things she may have not seen without your words. Lex, you push Brad to enjoy things sometimes without thinking so much and to find fun even in a serious setting. And on another amusing note: Brad looked like he was deep in thought listening to and understanding the words; whereas Lex looked like she was enjoying the music and harmony of Axl & Slash here. Lex looked like she was about to explode.
I'm glad you're finally getting around to this one. This is absolutely one of their best numbers! Others that are fantastic that you have not done: Mr Brownstone Night Train You Could Be Mine November Rain
I'm glad you guys finally reacted to this. This was a really underrated song when it came out because as teenagers, it was probably too deep to really get into. As kids, it was all about kegs, parties, friends, and blasting Metal til' the speakers almost blew out. It holds a lot more meaning for me today than it ever did back then even though the message is the same.
@@naeshort7909 I always knew what it was about too. It just didn't hit back then like it does today. As a teenager, nobody I knew was sitting around talking about politics, government, wars, the rights and wrongs of the past, present and future, etc.. We were too busy being kids.
I remember listening to this as a kid, asking my mom what civil meant, and what civil war meant - I still understood what the song was about, but on a much simpler level. I did not understand what "Little Tied Up" was about tho...
Young man, you nailed it. I've been listening to this song since the day it came out. I often wondered even way back then, if people would realize the death of the song and what's really going on in this world. Love y'all
This was beautiful to watch. Two people who really get great music. Edit: "do bands have pianists?" Most bands have someone that can play more than one instrument and you'd be surprised how many songs are composed...the general body or melody anyway on piano. As far as GNR is concerned, imma guess you haven't watched the video for November Rain yet?? Yeahhh...you might wanna do that..
I’m really loving your reactions… Two very intelligent, well spoken individuals, with a genuine love for not only music, but people and this country as well. I will be back for more… P.S. Axl is their pianist.
As I've listened to this song over the years I feel it is talking about a lot more than just military conflicts. It can be applied to almost any social justice issue as well.
You both had some great thoughts and perspectives on this song. Good stuff, it's the reason I even watch any reaction videos, I like how y'all think lol

He's talking about Kennedy. After he got assassinated they had black armbands. To show support of the Kennedys.
This song is perfect for what this country is going through right now.
Love Brad's "Freedom" speech! Tell it like it is! 🤜🤛
After I heard that, I couldn't believe that tune wasn't released that way rather than "Electric".
are u sure about T2? i think its for Terminator: Salvation
@@jasKSG Definitely T2: Judgement Day, the official video is full of clips from the movie, also I was there when the song and movie came out
I saw Slash and Myles Kennedy live in 2019 and they were incredible. They have a nice acoustic of Sweet Child O' Mine.
I actually like more of Myles Kennedy singing this song, can't explain why, maybe more modern production?
This is one of my absolute favorite GnR songs. They hit it right on the head when they put this song out!
just found your channel today, watched a dozen vids. Brad hadnt said much in most, now we see him connect with the lyrics and speak wisdom. Love seeing lex letting it out in all the vids while Brad is absorbing it.
Can't tell ya enough how happy I am you guys reacted to this particular GNR track.. it's by far one of their greatest...
My all time favorite song by them
I love how Lex just feels those guitar solos. Lex what you talk about with Slash and Axel is Slash's guitar brilliance coming through.
This is one of the best G&R songs ever, and yes TIMELESS for sure. just all around a great song
This is a timeless song with a timeless message.
A perfect example that hard rock isn't just "noise".
Also, a perfect song for Brad & Lex...
Left-brained for Brad with lyrics that carry a strong message and are easily understandable,
and Right-brained for Lex with creative songwriting along with strong musicianship.
ok dr. schizoid...simple, but inaccurate, analysis of their personalities
A true sign of an artist greatness is how their music can still be relevant years, decades and even longer. The greatest artists music is timeless!
I think writing about war has something to do with songs staying relevant, sadly.
GNR will withstand the sands of time regardless though.
I really love how she enjoyes the music of the song!
Brad really digs metal when they start spitting facts, you can see the little smile on his face. Priceless
Hands down, this is one of the best songs ever created and best reactions. Such powerful and thoughtful commentary.
@@jonathanhuggins654 @Jesse E. You both get it!! That is exactly what I meant.😉
@@sutherngirrl7590 this conversation reminds me of the movie August Rush for some reason. If you're not familiar with it, I highly recommend it. It's about how we are all connected by something. That something could definitely be music.
@@jonathanhuggins654 I know it well! We are all connected by frequency and music 🎶 is just that.
Civil War and Don’t Cry are my two favorite Guns ‘N’ Roses songs...two of my favorite songs regardless of band!
This song can definitely be related to any war really, the best line is feeding the rich and burying the poor
When Brad said “They probably aren’t trying to learn lessons” that really hit me hard. They’re not, are they? 🥺
"I feel like this song will never get old. Hopefully it does." Amen.
This is my absolute favorite GnR song. That intro is from the movie Cool Hand Luke. Bravo, Brad and Lex.
Fantastic movie. One of my favourites
I was going through the comments wondering how many I'd go through before somebody referred to Cool Hand Luke.
There are some songs that never lose their meaning and even became more actual in time, civil war is one of them
This song is Timeless! It is speaking volumes right now for sure! Definitely need to check out November Rain it is Epic! Knew Lex would come around, Axel reels you in lol🤟🇺🇸❤
Hold that freedom, Brad and Lex. Keep it in your hands. 💪
Brad! I agree whole heartedly with your statement about giving away our freedoms. You nailed that right on the head. Great reaction!
Brad, " this song never gets old, I hope it does..." I agree man, love you both!
It can't be overstated how much Duff brought to the band in terms of arrangements, let alone the bass parts.
November Rain and Patience are incredible as well.
One of the main features of Axel was the voice range. It went from low pitch to rough high pitch easily.
I really love the way she got involved and let her flow with sound and lyrics it was absolutely enjoyable!🎶
A lot of songs can never get old ,the moment it gets old is the moment hope is lost
This was a good song of a real good album. Yesterday and 14 years are a couple other slightly lesser known but darn good songs off the album.
Don't forget Don't Damn Me.
@@cmr8er8 one of my favourite all-time guitar riffs in Don't Damn Me
This was the first album(s) I remember taking the day off school to line up for on release date. I feel old
Breakdown, Estranged, Bad Apples, etc...
Axl is playing the piano, November Rain is a song where it's more in the forefront. It's one you want to make sure you watch the video as well.
On this song, the piano is played by Dizzy Reed, I believe.
I’ve always liked this song but actually reading the lyrics with it makes it powerful
Hell yea Lex! Your reaction at “My hands are tied”.was exactly what I was expecting.
Brad you’re absolutely right. Song will never age but we hope it does. Well put bro.
So glad yall had the lyrics with this. This song is so relevant, much more today than when it came out
The opening monologue is from the classic movie Cool Hand Luke. This is "late" G'nR,, Use Your Illusion
how many boiled eggs did he eat ?
If this is late GnR, what is Chinese Democracy? Zombie GnR? lol
@@maxis5650 truthfully, not even GNR.
"I went numb, when I learned to see" ain't that the TRUTH. Alternating numbness and desire to act...to do more.
This will always be my favorite of their incomparable catalog. ❤
My favorite G 'n' R tune. Your reaction rocked! Nice to see Brad getting in to it as well. Keep fighting the good fight. ✌
Others that are fantastic that you have not done:
Mr Brownstone
Night Train
You Could Be Mine
November Rain
I'm glad you guys finally reacted to this. This was a really underrated song when it came out because as teenagers, it was probably too deep to really get into. As kids, it was all about kegs, parties, friends, and blasting Metal til' the speakers almost blew out. It holds a lot more meaning for me today than it ever did back then even though the message is the same.
I remember listening to this song on a tape in third grade, I always knew what it was about.
Edit: "do bands have pianists?"
Most bands have someone that can play more than one instrument and you'd be surprised how many songs are composed...the general body or melody anyway on piano. As far as GNR is concerned, imma guess you haven't watched the video for November Rain yet?? Yeahhh...you might wanna do that..
November Rain is a must for the piano playing!! Great reaction..I Love this song
And the insane piano parts on "Breakdown" !
This and November Rain are my favorite GNR songs! Good stuff y'all!
Bad taste, Coma and Rockett Queen over here
Best thing about their music,it’s real and no bunch of apps to make em sound good💪Real musicians and bands that created music💪❤️🔥
To easy to use computer and AutoTune ,bring back the real musicians👍💪
Thanks guys. Never read lyrics. Eye opening. Lex is Brad's yin- yang. Perfect duo
I’m really loving your reactions… Two very intelligent, well spoken individuals, with a genuine love for not only music, but people and this country as well. I will be back for more… P.S. Axl is their pianist.
This song will always be relevant, especially now.
FINALLY! Great song, great band! #GNR
Axle is on the keys!! Check out November Rain and Don't Cry
This is my favorite Guns and Roses song. It definitely has a message. All great songs has a message.
One of my favorite songs from them of all time.
As I've listened to this song over the years I feel it is talking about a lot more than just military conflicts. It can be applied to almost any social justice issue as well.
You both had some great thoughts and perspectives on this song. Good stuff, it's the reason I even watch any reaction videos, I like how y'all think lol
You nailed this one Brad. This song might never get old and may always be relevant (unfortunately). Hell, this song could easily have been written in 1970. Kind of makes me sad that we haven't learned from past mistakes and history just continues to repeat itself.
Just gotta echo Brads sentiment on this one really: I hope it does get old. Not because of the song, obviously, but the message.
Your reactions are always truly sincere and respectful because you both are really paying sheer attention to the music and to the lyrics.
This song came out 32yrs ago in Sept. An still holds true to this day. Ask is a lyrical genius.
