Indie devs everywhere ought to adopt calling launch day "Day of the Duck" as a nod to the underwhelming overwhelming nature of game dev in general. Like "Hey, cool, we finally launched today! I also saw a duck, and that was cool too." is one of the most down-to-earth takes on game dev I've ever heard.
Hey Jonas and Paul. This devlog series has been a huge inspiration for me. Thank you for all the effort you put into sharing your journey with other indie developers.
These devlogs are really a masterclass in "how to software development". Not even limited to game dev. It's so great to follow you guys through prototyping, finding ideas you love but going for what can actually be a good game. Pivoting multiple times and involving your audience early. I don't know whether you deserve this, but you earned this success!
When it finally was released it was awesome seeing video after video on my youtube feed of people just enjoying the game. Loved watching your progress through this. Not only from this specific project, but all you learned from earlier projects with making music, graphics, and ...putting the fun in clicking a button.
Congratulations! I've been following this channel for a few years now so it's really cool to see it become so successful. It is also a reminder that even with everything going on with AI or Unity or market trends, with enough time, dedication, and a bit of luck the indie game dev dream is still alive.
I'm so proud of you jonas, I've been watching you since about halfway into your will you snail journey, and I've never thought anything other than, "man, God really smiled when he made this lovely little man"
The universe didn't just choose you, Jonas. You worked your ass off to document the whole process of designing, prototyping, marketing and releasing an amazing game. You deserve this.
Congratulations on the successful release! I also just launched a game on Steam, it has sold an order of magnitude less than Thronefall but it is still enough that I can make a living making games for a while to come. I can relate to the feelings of it being simultaneously really weird and surreal but also completely normal at the same time. I can only imagine the extent to which you must be feeling this. Really amazing work!
Yo, congratz on the success here. Wild to see you and your team turn around this project in 150+ days of work. I know these were not sequential days, but still that is very impressive. Cheers!
Damn, this is super weird. I bought this game back in August as I was browsing Steam and found it interesting. It showed up in my recommended games page, as I like real-time strategy games and tower defense. Today, I get your video in my youtube home page, and realize you're one of the devs working on the game! I used to watch your videos some time back (although I believe it has been more than a year now, time flies). I remember you receiving videos from subscribers about little puzzle games the the like, and reviewing them and giving tips. It's fun to see that one of the youtubers I used to watch actually released a game that I bought and enjoyed, with the game finding its way to me all on its own!
wow, as an indie solo dev myself who is about to participate in Steam next fest with my open world farming game, i don't think that there's any better video on YT exist right now. Your success story is very inspirational and you both deserve every bit of it.!
You're such a skilled game dev. You fool around and stuff, but when it comes to actually getting stuff done, you're dead serious. You buckle down and do it, skillfully and masterfully. Thronefall is not at all my type of game, and I most likely will not play it as I can never figure out how to play these things, but good job. I enjoyed WYS and bought it at launch, even if I never beat it. I'm a game dev myself and I've been trying for ages to get a commercial release out. This is very interesting to watch for someone in my position. I am making my game my way. It isn't going to be as in-depth as your games. It will likely be significantly more glitchy. But it will be fun and it will have personality. I've struggled a lot with enjoying game dev for the past 2 years or more, and I've given up on it a few times, but I've kept coming back. Now I am reusing a lot of what I've made in the past 4 years and some stuff that's even older, to make this game.
You guys really deserve it , we were watching devlogs almost from the begining and you dont even know how many times you inspierded and motivated us to work ourselfs. Great job and dont sit in your glory chair for too long we want to see your next awesome project! But now excuse me i need to spend some money on steam rn
@@madjunir well, the situation could still change dramatically due to all the shitstorm. I hope it does. I have been working on a Unity game for years and there are still years ahead of me, making an engine switch unfeasible.
Congratulations on the release!! After spending so many years developing Will You Snail, it must be really weird to launch a game with half an year of production and achieve maybe even more recognition... but hey, you guys totally deserve it!! I'll be waiting for the full release now ❤
Very amazing. Congratulations! Always remember it was much more than 180 days to get to this point. It is the culmination of of hard work, experience and dedication to your craft from all the previous games you've ever made. You've helped many game developers with your RUclips channel and you deserve every bit of reward for the value you've provided to the world.
It's amazing to see people working together to build up a game, i know nothing about coding and tools but i just love to watch people doing it then testing it out just to see the progression. Well done!!
I'm so dang proud. I remember when Blackthorn first shouted you out, you had like 300 subs and no games realeased. And now seeing you reach these numbers is crazy. Congratulations!
Ich freue mich sooooo sehr für euch :D Ihr habt in vergleichsweise so kurzer Zeit so ein Hammer Projekt rausgehauen WOW! Ich hoffe dass ich auch irgendwann an so einem Punkt ankommen werde ^^
Man, as someone who watched you since almost the very beginning, I can't explain how proud I am. You're an inspiration! Thank you for producing such amazing content and games.
Congratulations to you and Paul for making it through the slog. Your measured, grounded approach is an inspiration, and you deserve every success coming your way! Es ist ja wahnsinnig schwierig, all das mit nur zwei Personen zu schaffen. Ich freue mich auf die kommenden Updates!
Congrats on the launch! It's great so see this be received so well. You deserve all the success, just thinking about the knock on effect it will have on inspiring others (me included) and driving the indie scene forward is exciting. There's a lot of good stuff to take away from this and your methodologies too. A real top class example of how to make a fun game. Kudos Jonas. Keep going.
Jonas!! Of course you deserve it!! You made so much effort over the years, contributed to a community on YT, made jams, educational content. It only makes sense you get the fruits of your labor finally! Very happy for you :)
Don't think I've ever left a comment before, but I've been watching your stuff for a good while, really happy for you, seeing all the effort you put into your community and content reflecting on giving your independent projects some momentum, so it has a chance to prove itself out there. Sadly many great game ideas fly under the radar.
After seeing the game on CodeMonkey's video, I played it and had TONS of fun! Very much loved the game, very inspired that this was made by a youtuber I can watch and using unity! Thank you so much for the game and your videos!
I discovered this game last week and it has been one of the best indie games I have ever played. Phenomenal work! I'm very curious to see where it goes!
I didn't realize you were part of this, as I've been watching your videos for a bit now. I haven't played it yet but it was one of the only games that almost took me away from making my own game that I'm diligently creating. :) Congrats dude!
Congratulations on a successful launch, Jonas! You and Paul deserve this success! You guys are great! Your success motivates other developers not to stop!
Congratulations! Hopefully "soon" I'll release my first game. :) Thank you for showing all that you do, helps inspire me and helps me understand better what to do and what not to do.
LOL, remember things take time! Day 171 or something... Looking at over 1500 days of development and still no launch day. Next one will be quicker for sure though. Amazing work. Thronefall plays fantastic and of course your work on here is a huge part of what made that happen. IT might feel more random than it actually was, you definitely played your cards very well. I feel like it's a pretty neat time, to be part of the german indie scene. :)
The insight into how launch day feels is my favorite part of this video. The fact that something can be so exciting but lack any instant feedback is a very strange situation.
Thank you for your excellence both in gamedev and in content creation. These devlogs are powerfully insightful for newcomers and veterans alike wanting to make their mark.
Really interesting take on the feelings of release day! I wonder if part of it was being alone. I can imagine it might feel more real and eventful if you were in a team of people all counting down to launch and celebrating after. But also there's the nature of a purely virtual event where you basically get your 5 minutes of fame, it appears on the front page and then it's gone and replaced by the other 1,000 games that were released on Steam that day! There must be a bit of a weird feeling of detachment there?
Thank you for the great videos, Jonas! I've been following your content for a long time and you are a great inspiration. You guys have created a truly amazing game, and I simply love how dedicated you are to improving its quality day by day. I would have loved to see more of the rest of the team in the videos :)
I have known your channel at least for 3-4 years. I'm really happy to see your achievement. That's truly inspiring. I hope someday I will experience the same feelings ✨
