It seems Valve had an idea of how guns worked but was not very sure about it. Excellent video, by the way. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A note on the 18 rounds on HL1's Glock: as with any other self-loading weapon, you get one extra round by insetring a magazine, loading a round, and replacing the magazine (now 1 round short) with a full magazine. You get 17 rounds in a magazine +1 round in the chamber. So, it was kind of true in HL1, where you got one extra round by reloading a full magazine, but the animation didn't show running the slide and loading a round (as most games do not show a true reloading cycle). Idea was correct, but the implementation of it was not.

Played Half-Life this year as my first FPS ever. For some reason I never knew that guns in shooters don't actually go where you point - I have a hard enough time actually aiming! No wonder I got so frustrated with the HL2 pistol right away. Good, clearly explained content!
The older versions of HL2 also had remnants of a scrapped alt fire for the USP, which was supposed to be just like Glock's alt fire. Due to some glitch in the retail version you could hold M2+M1, then release M2 after a few seconds to shoot several rounds simultaneously with a VERY tight spread. Too bad it was "fixed" somewhere around Ep2 release. It wasn't even all that broken, because you must've wait the same amount of time which would take to fire the same amount by holding just M1.
I find it funny how the pistol modeled after a regular pistol is laser accurate, yet the one modeled after a match gun (a gun literally designed for target shooting), is less accurate

Half life 1's pistol just was better in design it wasn't usless and the ammo didn't disappear at a certain point in the game because they did something smart and have the 9mm pistol of the game share the same ammo as the 9mm smg. 1's pistol isn't the greatest pistol in gaming by any means but I'll never understand anybody who likes the hl2 arsenal because it feels so rushed and tacky which makes sense considering half life 2 the version we got was made in under a year. Can't wait to see the video about Alyx's pistol, as it's your workhorse throughout the entire game. Always useful and it's accuracy is really only limited to how good you are yourself when with using it. Though it's kinda hard for it not to be useful throughout the entire game as Alyx only gives you 3 weapons (4 if you count the grenades) Though it does get better as you progress further into the game, with the upgrades to it. A neat idea from Valve I'd say. Instead of giving the player a ton of weapons, some of which will be useless as you progress further. Give the player a limited selection and make them useful the entire way. But also reward the player for exploring the levels as much as possible.
Hl2 leak’s usp is different on its reload animations, it’s kinda more sloppier than the release. The only difference aside from the brass eject. I love your videos.
Honestly when he started talking about “valve introducing things and then never having a reason to use them” kindve makes sense in the real world. Like if you got the rpg to take down a flying killing machine, and then having to run away. You’ll have this useless weight that you’ll have to drop off somewhere. But are you gonna give up a perfectly good dog? No! You’ll think it’ll be useful someday and keep it with you
There actually used to be a bug in earlier versions of half life 2 where you could do what was known as a ‘power shot’ with the pistol, where if you held down the right mouse button, then the left. He pistol wouldn’t fire until you released the right mouse button. If you held it long enough, you could fire the entire mag in one big shot. Supposedly at one point you could do it with the M16 in L4D1 could do the same thing, but I’ve never seen it myself
Gordon was awake for 3 whole days shooting things, running and killing in the first game, he then takes a nap and as soon as he wakes up its 20 years into the future but for him it's the 4th day I'd imagine at this point his skills have overloaded where he's so used to it and relaxed that he fires it with one hand
In older versions of half life 2 you could charge your shot with glock by holding left mouse button and right mouse button simultaneously, forcing it to shoot like a shotgun with all of its magazine ammo
Oh boii, The pistol in HL1 and mods is like my designated sniper, I love the ACC, but when I play HL2, for me the pistol succs but then think that it wass purposely nerfed for balance and I say ok and still play with a no-so useful pistol for long range combat -_- Cool video! now that we started to talk about the weapongs, maybe the shotgun with it's "double shot" mechanic could be a funny topic :)
Oh, ok, I didn't know that, it's abit hard to spot that but well, cool to know. There is also things like shotgun select icon and and how it looks in the HD version compared to classic/LD that can be a fun topic to talk :) Have a nice weekend!
Half-Life 1's by far. Far more accurate and uses an ammo type that's also used by the SMG (which, admittedly, isn't a great weapon in of itself). The one in Half-Life 2's is less accurate and uses an ammo type that becomes completely worthless come Highway 17. I always went out of my way to get rid of it.
@@lord157 Glock does more damage per shot, and because it is so accurate you can headshot grunts most of the time. Overall, SMG damage output is only better at the close range.
Also, the HL 1 is "fully auto" and it is great weapon against headcrabs. I think that HL1 weapons were superior to the HL2 ones, because every gun in HL1 had it's specific niche. Unlike in Hl2, where pistol and SMG were pretty bad and useless.
The HL2 pistol is my favorite pistol in any game, ever. Perfect visuals and sound and it fires as fast as you can press the left mouse button. That echo is just awesome.
9:44 "Try to find a real difference here." Okay. Pre-release pistol has stronger recoil. The camera actually sways upwards a smidge per shot. It also has a slightly longer reload. The reload sound is also broken/unfinished in pre-release, and actually wasn't fixed until steampipe came along.
I still think HL1's glock had the most detailed animations. If you fire until the mag's empty, the slide locks back when you reload. If you reload before the mag's empty, it doesn't lock back. I know it's a small detail, but it's tiny things like that which I appreciate the hell out of, it tells me the person making the animation actually knew how the average handgun works and did their best to replicate it in game, even though only weirdos like me would notice it.
I'd argue that most of half life 1's weapon animations are better than 2's actually, the ones in half life 2 look a little...robotic,idk how exactly to describe it but they look meh (especially the crossbow and shotgun)
you could credit Gordon always racking the slide of the Glock in old builds to his slight ineptness with guns, but the argument falls apart when you figure he knows how to operate an Exotic semi-auto/pump/double barrel SPAS 12, MP5, Crossbow, revolver two highly experimental particle-based energy weapons AND a symbiotic alien armgun
For the record, the reloading glitch was exclusive to the WON Version of the game. By the time it got ported to Steam they patched it out. However, it's still present in a lot of older mods, famously Azure Sheep.
If you take the guards along on your journey in Half Life, you get rewarded more than just killing them for ammo, because they have an unlimited supply of ammo for themselves. Also, they seem to consistently kill all of the vortigaunts you meet for the first time in Office Complex. There's a whole group, and yet you can literally just take a guard, trigger the vortigaunts, and hide in the room right before it. There's also the grenades and stuff you get in that room after meeting the first houndeyes that a scientist needs to open. Of course, if you reach a point where a guard won't or can't follow you anymore, you can kill them for the ammo.
HL2's pistol definetely wins. It might lack accuracy a TINY bit, but it's sheer powerfulness and that fact it looks beautiful outdoes the glock in nearly every way possible.

9:36 the slide locks when empty and when you insert a new mag gordon uses the mag release to chamber a round or if you have reload with a chambered round there is no need to pull the slide. On both scenarios you will just expend a usable round so is better to have left the animation without pulling the slide
"Usually on the weaker side" just as it cuts away from the blood flare gun, arguably one of the single most OP starting weapons due to the secondary fire
For deathmatch, the pistol is the last thing to use. You can only use it when you are forced to engage combat with other players right after you spawn. Otherwise, it will only get you killed if you try to use it.
Are we not going to talk about the fact that Valve has no fucking idea how handguns actually work? *presses mag release button* *slide slides back and locks* I guess in Half Life 2 guns are powered by Vortigaunt space magic and not explosions and physics.
honestly, i prefer the half life 1 pistol, gun preference cause i like glocks, i like its secondary fire, its more accurate, it shares ammo, and it sounds meaty for a pistol, espically compared to hl2's pistol. it also EJECTS SHELLS, and the slide goes back when out of ammo like an ACTUAL PISTOL, oh yeah, hl2 pre release pistol uses a different reload sound, more accurate, different hud indication sprite, and i believe it cant fire as fast, id have to go check the beta itself to find out. oh yeah the reload is slower too. also no clue why, but uh the shell casing models, are way too big compared to the guns themselves, i have no clue why they would make them so big the shells in half life 1 are just as big as the magizene
Fun Fact: The pistol and the magnum both share the same sound effects, the only difference is that Valve sped it up/pitch shifted it. I found it out when working on a sound mod for HL2, as much as I love HL1's compressed sound effects I didn't wanted to make sounds have weird quality changes, then I tried mixing both HL2 and HL1's proper gun sounds and came out glorious. However when working on the magnum sound effect (and since both sounds had different lenght) I accidentaly sped up the sound too much and came out exactly like the pistol, works the same way in reversed using the pistol and slowing it down.
The Glock is better by a wide margin. Extremely accurate long-range hitscan with decent enough damage is useful throughout the entire game, especially for picking off wounded Alien Controllers, who I absolutely fucking hate. I use it so much in Xen that I end up with no ammo by the time I get to the final boss. The USP in comparison goes right into the garbage as soon as you get the MP7; it deals about the same damage with the same terrible accuracy, so why wouldn't you go with the gun that has more abundant ammo, bigger magazines, a higher rate of fire, and a fucking grenade launcher? The MP5 serves a different purpose for you than the Glock, but the MP7 replaces the USP entirely.
Something about the impactfulness of the weapons is what always influenced my enjoyment for using them, the Glock sounds as punchy as it deserves to be, it's slow but it's accuracy and damage output make up for it, meanwhile the USP sounds embarrassingly weak compared to the smg that it's shocking that the USP is stronger in terms of dps, because I feel like I'm slingshotting small pieces of hail more than I am shooting someone with a gun which actually does something with Half Life 2's... *Peashooter.*
Your talk of aesthetics is interesting. Just curious, if you have to choose a real handgun to model the pistol for the next half-life game, is there one that comes to mind. Personally, I like the general look of H&K pistols, specifically models chambered in 9mm.
Most likely since Half Life 3 would be set right after the ending of Half Life Alyx, it would most likely be the UPS Match again. Although if I had to pick a gun, I'd probably want to return to the Glock 17

Idea was correct, but the implementation of it was not.
i dunno the glock has been my favorite handgun in games for a while, there is just something about the design that i love
Kinda ugly but gets the job done, and done pretty well at that. That's why I like SR Q1's.
I also love design of the USP in general, such as the USP Tactical and Counter Strike and, well, the USP Match in HL2
One of the best pistol shoot sounds as well

18 clip was probably because when you reload while having 1 bullet in the chamber and adding a 17 clip

Supposedly TF2 had a similar exploit with the default pistol for the Engineer and Scout class
I find it funny how the pistol modeled after a regular pistol is laser accurate, yet the one modeled after a match gun (a gun literally designed for target shooting), is less accurate
"Speaking of Opposing Force" Holy shit that one caught me offguard
But why
I love how you can spam pistol in HL2 as fast as you want, firing sound is also good and it gives a punchy feeling to the gun
Finally someone who likes the HL2 pistol!
The firing sound is weak and the gun feels like you're shooting airsoft bbs, even though I hate all of the half life 2 arsenal I'm willing to admit that the revolver and shotgun retained their feeling. I don't know what anybody means by the half life 2 pistol having power it's just not there or I'm missing something
@@JSmokesII Use the pistol throughout all of Highway 17 and your opinion will change :)
@@Turbs94945 I have, what was it supposed to change, if I recall correctly the ammo for it was scarce from that point in that chapter. The pistol to me is never fun to use regardless of the situation I just think it's weak sounding, an ugly model, and overall no power feeling. In the beta most of the weapons were the same sounds and models of course but all those other weapons felt out of place because they had punch to them
@@JSmokesII Well it least on easy it can kill combine soldiers in 5 or 6 shots. The sound is great and the beautiful imo, it makes it better than HL1's pistol for me

Can't wait to see the video about Alyx's pistol, as it's your workhorse throughout the entire game. Always useful and it's accuracy is really only limited to how good you are yourself when with using it.
Though it's kinda hard for it not to be useful throughout the entire game as Alyx only gives you 3 weapons (4 if you count the grenades)
Though it does get better as you progress further into the game, with the upgrades to it. A neat idea from Valve I'd say.
Instead of giving the player a ton of weapons, some of which will be useless as you progress further. Give the player a limited selection and make them useful the entire way. But also reward the player for exploring the levels as much as possible.
3:57 you can actually tell in his voice that he lost it xD

I love your videos.
That's kinda funny, this is the first video I see from this channel and it popped up after just watching the latest Ross Scott fan chat.

What I think the HL2 pistol missed is the two-hand hold, sound and fire rate, it didn't feel as good to use as the HL1 pistol does
Gordon was awake for 3 whole days shooting things, running and killing in the first game, he then takes a nap and as soon as he wakes up its 20 years into the future but for him it's the 4th day I'd imagine at this point his skills have overloaded where he's so used to it and relaxed that he fires it with one hand
In the pre-release of Half Life 2, the USP actually seems to have a glossy slide & dust cover, making it appear almost die-cast like.
Aight back after the borderlands movie and man oh man
In older versions of half life 2 you could charge your shot with glock by holding left mouse button and right mouse button simultaneously, forcing it to shoot like a shotgun with all of its magazine ammo
Oh boii, The pistol in HL1 and mods is like my designated sniper, I love the ACC, but when I play HL2, for me the pistol succs but then think that it wass purposely nerfed for balance and I say ok and still play with a no-so useful pistol for long range combat -_-
Cool video! now that we started to talk about the weapongs, maybe the shotgun with it's "double shot" mechanic could be a funny topic :)
It just shoots twice quickly, you can hear it in the sound effects :)

Make such comparison for the other weapons too
Half-Life 1's by far. Far more accurate and uses an ammo type that's also used by the SMG (which, admittedly, isn't a great weapon in of itself). The one in Half-Life 2's is less accurate and uses an ammo type that becomes completely worthless come Highway 17. I always went out of my way to get rid of it.
the smg litreally replaces it after chapter 6.
@@lord157 Glock does more damage per shot, and because it is so accurate you can headshot grunts most of the time. Overall, SMG damage output is only better at the close range.
@@sir0herrbatka but the smg is really useful for handling grunts since it also stores grenades
Also, the HL 1 is "fully auto" and it is great weapon against headcrabs. I think that HL1 weapons were superior to the HL2 ones, because every gun in HL1 had it's specific niche. Unlike in Hl2, where pistol and SMG were pretty bad and useless.
The SMG is one of the best weapons in the game lmao found the dude that has never played on Hard
I always thought HL2 pistol was a futuristic version of the CT pistol in Counter Strike
The HL2 pistol is my favorite pistol in any game, ever. Perfect visuals and sound and it fires as fast as you can press the left mouse button. That echo is just awesome.
Friends, this is your daily reminder about Bullsquids! Rejoice, and Thank You~!
A Glock can indeed hold 18 rounds like that if you reload before it's fully empty.
3:52 that was so unexpected, it got me wheezing
9:44 "Try to find a real difference here."
Okay.
I had a hearty laugh after the opposing force joke
6:28 that aged painfully
HL2's pistol definetely wins. It might lack accuracy a TINY bit, but it's sheer powerfulness and that fact it looks beautiful outdoes the glock in nearly every way possible.

Pistol designed around 3 shots.. WAIT. Valve used 3.

I guess in Half Life 2 guns are powered by Vortigaunt space magic and not explosions and physics.

What ive always questioned was why the silenced pistol on Team Fortress had such a slow firing rate. You could only shoot one bullet every 10 seconds
Who knows, it's Team Fortress Classic
honestly, i prefer the half life 1 pistol, gun preference cause i like glocks, i like its secondary fire, its more accurate, it shares ammo, and it sounds meaty for a pistol, espically compared to hl2's pistol. it also EJECTS SHELLS, and the slide goes back when out of ammo like an ACTUAL PISTOL, oh yeah, hl2 pre release pistol uses a different reload sound, more accurate, different hud indication sprite, and i believe it cant fire as fast, id have to go check the beta itself to find out. oh yeah the reload is slower too. also no clue why, but uh the shell casing models, are way too big compared to the guns themselves, i have no clue why they would make them so big the shells in half life 1 are just as big as the magizene
The secondary fire on the glock was AWFUL, even at close range. And that point just use the SMG lol
"who has the better pistol?"
Alyx.
Nah bro, Striders still suck in episode 2. That section was dreadful. Good video!
The striders part in episode 2 was way worse than the part where you have to escort citizens in ep1. Change my mind.
I actually enjoyed that chapter. The striders are fun to fight, and once you know what you're doing, you won't have a chance of losing.
The phil swift shitpost was perfect
hl2 pistol used to be abled to do charge shots due to a glitch on alt fire
5:01 Ah yes my favourite weapon the machinegun!
Felt like the complete inverse for me
The irony of modelling a weird, sport-specific match shooting pistol and then giving it middling accuracy.
1:43 in FAAAAAAAAACT you can get the pistol even EARLIER by pushing the security guard that won't let you proceed without your hazard suit near the elevator during anomolous materials and use said elevator to crush the security guard.
2:54 Doesn't seem like a mistake to me as that other bullet could be the one in the chamber
Yeah it wasn't, it was just removed because people thought it was a bug and complained about it endlessly, and Valve removed it to calm people down.
