Turbulence and CRAZY Crosswind!!

- First big trip following our annual inspection. I depart Chicago Aurora Airport (ARR) on an IFR flight plan to Rough River State Park, Kentucky (2I3). Chicago Approach did a great job getting us up quickly to the smooth air and on course. I was able to easily configure the Avidyne IFD550 to my liking and then experienced some pretty strong turbulence on descent into Rough River. There is no weather reporting there so I circled the airport to check out the wind sock which was showing about a 25-30 knot direct crossing for runway 02. Made for a very exciting landing!

I'm starting a GoFundMe to have that dang visor replaced, repaired or removed. Anyone else willing to contribute? :)
Great landing, Kevin!
I was just going to post that very same thing!!! Too funny!!
put in a blu-ray player, as well....also, one word: Velcro.
Ha ha...thanks guys. I have brand new Rosen Sun Visors in the box waiting to be installed. They ran out of time last time it was in the shop. They said they can do it in a few weeks. Can't wait!!
310 Pilot Can you not install them or does everything need to be done by a certified air mechanic?
LOL Great idea! Until then I'm shipping a bungie cord to Kevin!
Great video and great landing. I was getting a little worried on the approach but once again you handled it like the pro you are.
Thanks Kevin.
Thank you, Kevin , great landing. I was definitely nervous. I watch you on my iPad I kept squeezing it harder and harder, held my breath.
Definitely a sporty approach and landing and you handled it great Kevin. Always enjoy your commentary and explanations. Very informative for both flyers and us non-flyers. Happy Landings.
Great job sticking that rock-&-roll landing Kevin ! You know it’s rough, when the visor says “I’m OUT !” and tries to bail ! 🇺🇸🛫
Ha ha...thanks Randy! Can't wait to get that visor replaced. Should be just a few weeks. :)
310 Pilot No need Kevin, I’ll send you a roll of duct tape. I’ll even send the brown, “high-class” tape, favored in the more affluent parts of Tennessee and Kentucky. 😁
Nice job !!!! Those landings keep you sharp! Keep them coming!
Nice work, great video. Winds were a handful here a couple months ago too. That runway comes up fast in that airplane, great job.
Man!!! Kevin, I needed a benadryl to watch. That was some PBR riding status..excellent job on cowboying up..lol. great video!!
Great flight, Kevin. Really enjoyed it. Glad you got the new system set the way you wanted it. That was a great landing, although you had to fight it so much. You had us on edge there for a couple of minutes. But, as they say, any landing where all is safe, is a good landing. We missed Jaime, but hope you had a good time there with the guys. As always, Happy Flying, and, as shown in this video, Always Safe Landings. Look forward to the next video.
Gotta love those squirrelly winds on short final. Great job sticking it, I was reaching for the throttles watching this.
Bro...that landing...sporty is an understatement. Very nicely done!
Thanks Mike!! Sometimes I wish I could turn off the cameras built in stabilization to show just how rough these kind of days really look. :)
Good landing with that crazy wind! I was puckered up and relieved when you set down. ;o)
Wow man, that landing looked so smooth despite the conditions! You're such a great pilot!
Wow Kevin, great flying and even better Landing! I’ve been to Rough River a long time ago and I remember it as a great little park.
Thanks Ron...I really enjoyed my time there! I'm sure we'll go back again.
A nail biter landing for sure. Jamie might have been freaking a little but you know what you are doing. Great that all of your friends made it in safely as well. Thanks for the ride Kevin.
Kevin, nice job on that crosswind landing! Thanks for sharing! Don :-)
Outstanding video once again. Thank you 👍👍👍👍👊🏻
Well done Kevin, handling that cross wind looked scary. Another great video !
Thank you Barry! :)
Once again, awesome landing Kevin. Once again, thanks for the ridealong.
You're welcome Mark and thank you!
Excellent job on the landing, and yes you do hand fly your plane so very well---u got it!!! Thanks for the video from Cajun Country and SEC!!!!!
Thanks Randall...glad you enjoyed it! Go DAWGS (and Braves now that the second...real...part of the season is starting). :)
That landing was intense! Great job!
My hands are sweaty after that one....wooooohooooo! Great job bringin her home!
Thank you Micky! :)
wow, what a spirited landing, well done. great to see you were ready to go-around. It's important to remember every landing is just a failed go-around.
And every landing is great when you walk away.
Kaine Sherwood haha.. i was definitely puckered up watching... 😜 i would have opened door and bailed lol
Great videos. I have been to 2I3 many times in the past when I use to fly. The club at HNB goes there quite often.
I knew we'd get there safely with you in the cockpit. Have a fun time and thanks for the ride.
Thanks Gord!! :)
Great crosswind landing! That approach was gnarly
Thanks Michael!
High pucker factor on that landing. Nice job :)
Outstanding landing, I was a little nervous!
Nice landing man! After a lot of movement on final approach you put it down swiftly! 👌🏻
Thank you! It was a sporty one for sure. :)
Great landing. That approach had me a little jumpy with the turbulence. Great video.
Nicely done Kevin! Way to stay with it and be loaded for Go-Around.
Thanks Jason! I was close to going full firewall but glad to get it down safely and not have to jump back up into the rough air. :)
Another great video. Thanks for the inspiration...
Glad you enjoyed it George!
Looked like a “high pucker-factor” final, you did an outstanding job with that landing. I half expected a much rougher landing as fast as you brought it in, but smoothed it right out! Looking forward to seeing you new visors (or maybe NOT seeing them) 😂😂
WOW, great X-Wind landing! Too wild!
Thanks Don! :)
Nicely done Kevin, your piloting skills definitely paid off. A lot of pilots would have aborted and gone to their alternates.
The worst turbulence I ever flew into was an ILS approach to PWK in 80' ... I was grabbing the bottom of the seat to avoid becoming a permanent fixture of the cabin overhead.
After landing I had the guys at Priester (that tells you how far back I go) perform an airframe inspection of the plane for damage and it was fine ... but it definitely got my attention.
What a great landing. Excellent!
That was one heck of a landing !
Thank you John!!
It's whipping down here too ... great job 👍🏻👊🏻💪🏻🙌🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great landing Mr. Kevin! Looks like you’re really learning the new equipment too. Hope you and Jamie had a nice Independence day!
Thank you! We did have a nice holiday...hope you did as well. :)
These are so much fun!
Kevin, Now THAT's what I call a great landing!!!! That was amazing watching how you handled that! You put it down like an old carrier pilot on rough seas but smooth as glass!
I was impressed!
I hope you and the family had a Happy 4th of July! Looking forward to the follow up video of the fly in! They should of had someone on coms at all times to give wind advisories and a panel of pilots to judge landings! Bet you'd of taken 1st if it was a contest!
Thank you Don!! In the past we have had a group of pilots with number cards to judge the landings when subsequent people are flying in. This year I was the first to brave it and most didn't get in for a few hours to let the winds subside a bit. A few canceled and drove in due to wx concerns. :)
@@310Pilot WOW! In a case like that you win by default I think! Just goes to show what a great pilot you are! I really was impressed with your steady hand and nerves, some people are just naturally built or wired to perform well under stress, I'd say you are one of them!
I always prided myself in that racing mx and flying paragliders, but never flew planes enough to know, but enough to think I may not have been as good or competent at that than other things but I was just a student pilot and the radios overwhelmed me lol. Glad you landed safe! See you in the next one!
1 Bravo Charlie!
Hello Kevin, hope you guys had a great 4th, and true to form you're back here with us for another flight....cool
You appear to be thoroughly enjoying all your new avionics gear and safety upgrade to the shoulder belts.
A shame Jaime couldn't join you for this exciting flight...
Fly safe, enjoy your weekend.
Doug@ the "ranch"
Howdy Doug! We are loving our new avionics and safety gear. As always, I wish she could have made it with me for this flight. :)
Another great flight sir, looking forward to more :)
Glad you enjoyed it Ed...thank you!
That was a hairy landing! Well done!!!
Nice landing! Came in hot and heavy! ✈✈✈
Enjoyed it, bumps and all!
Add sweaty palms on that landing. Good job Kevin.
Another great video and landing
Thank you Gerald!
Great video , yeah weather that weekend was very windy , great landing , like my instructor used to tell me , you almost look like you know what you are doing lol
Ha ha...thanks James...I'll take the compliment. :) It was fun but not the type weather that most people enjoy flying in...other than those goofy ones of us. :)
Damn near spilled my beer on that landing, good job Kevin !
Ha ha...I forgot to mention tray tables in the upright and locked position. :) Thanks Lennny!
Ride that Bull! That Head Shot looked like a vertebra compression with some belt marks. Keep’em coming.
Ha ha...if I had the seat belt any loser I'd be in concussion protocol. :)
Wow! Great landing!
Nice video, Kevin. The wind was really pushing you on base leg. The video stabilization on the GoPro is crazy. Several segment you see the plane getting knocked around but the scenery just stands still. And very cool that you had a planned alternative from the beginning.
Kevin, Love the turbulence...keep those seat belts tight! LOL. Another great flight and when you overflew the airport the runway looked short so I googled 213 and saw it was 3200' With that said, really nice landing on a semi short runway with strong crosswinds. My compliments! Until next time, safe flying.
Thanks RL!! Made sure to tighten the belts down after that jolt...glad I had my new shoulder harnesses. Pretty short for what I normally land on and I had to keep the speed up a bit to protect for wind shear and keep enough air over the rudder to get the nose around with those crosswinds. Fun, albeit bumpy, flight. :)
It use to be 2500 feet long when I flew there 20 years ago.
Great video again!
Interesting. Nice management of your inflight altitude planning, which paid off for you with speed. And really nice job on the Rough River landing. Sorry Jamie couldn't make it.
Thanks Mike...the flight went really well all things considered. :)
That was wild but handled professionally as always, another awesome video :)
Thanks Rab...glad you enjoyed it! :)
Great stick Kevin! Hope the visit was great!
Thank you...it was a blast!
Good Landing Kevin...nice job!
Thank you Andrew!
Nice flying there Skipper.👍👍🛩🇦🇺
Thank you Russell!
My seat belt was SO tight my toes started to tingle... lol -- NICE landing Kev.
Yep.. a C310 sure can rodeo in rough conditions..!!
I found myself leaning left and gripping the arm of my chair with that landing..lol. Your senses are at their highest when you're landing in a condition like that and that alone chisels your experience. Good job Kevin!
Thank you David!! Sometimes I wish I could turn off the cameras built in stabilization so it shows just how rough some of these days are. That was about my max comfort level in this plane with that length of runway and the crosswind. :)
@@310Pilot Kevin, no doubt it's nothing like the camera depicts it!. At least you aren't a risk taker like a certain 414 pilot I referenced a few weeks ago... that guy is right next to insane. It's a Cessna 414 dude!, not a Porsche GT-2...lol.
That was sporty..!! Lol.
Nice job with a tough approach..!!
Great 👍 landing Kevin. Nice flight.
Thank you Paul!!
That landing was incredible. I kept thinking you had too much speed, obviously not. I really like the inset shots. Great editing!
Thanks Lars! I kept my speed up a bit for two reasons. 1) possible wind shear loss 2) needed the extra airflow over the rudder so I'd have enough authority to get the nose around straight in the flare. :)
Great landing Kev.
Good work bro!
Damn man, I can barely remember the clearance while I'm writing it down and you just straight remembered it off the top of your head. Impressive, man.
Ha ha...thank you. It helps that I'm a controller in the same airspace. At other spots I will typically write it down. :)
Nice landing, Kevin. Hope y'all had a fun Independence day.
Thanks Karl! Hope you had a good one as well. :)
God that reminded me of flying in NM!! Also had a flight like that flying from PA to TX. Great job! :)
Thanks! Yeah, that kind of bumps is usually associated with areas that have some terrain features. :)
@@310Pilot My first solo Cross Country was in a Comanche 260 that I still have today. The sky was perfectly clear and I had smooth air when I took off from NM. When I landed in TX, it was so bumpy and windy that I had second thoughts of taking off to my second leg...It got really turbulent and I questioned whether I actually wanted to be a pilot! What an experience as a student pilot... :)
Damn Kevin I didn't know when you had that 550 installed, you also had Auto deploy sun visors too😆😆
Nice job well done 👍
I'm sure Jamie didn't miss that rough ride, although we missed her. Great job, again!
I'll send you a flyer soon about our Aug 31st fly-in at KTZV, just 70 more miles past Rough River.
Sounds good Darrell! I did miss her but I'm sure not many passengers would have enjoyed that descent and landing. :)
Great show buddie!
Thanks Paul!
Enjoyed the ride!
Thanks Dave...glad you enjoyed it!
That landing…that was tremendous!
Thank you! :)
Ride 'em, cowboy. Be glad you didn't get caught in the nasty weather that hit Kentucky Dam recently.
That even looked crazy on short final there! I bet Jamie would've enjoyed that approach there, LOL. 😂 Crazy air! Nice work getting her in there.
Great flight as always, Kevin. You'll have to sell that visor on eBay when the time comes - that thing is famous, lol. Might get you a few tanks of aviation fuel. 😉 "The cursed visor from 310 Pilot" would be a great ad title. 😁 Doesn't bother me none - my cars all do the same thing. 🤣
Glad you enjoyed it Smitty!! I can't wait to get that thing out of the plane. Current plans are to take it out to the farm and shoot it full of holes. :)
@@310Pilot - HAHAHA! That'll work! I did that to my last inkjet printer ... 😁
Nice x-wind smooth touchdown. Good decision.
Thank you Grant!
skillful landing. I was just about to yell, "go around, go around". LOL
Ha ha...thanks John! I was ready for it and thinking there was a high likely hood. Glad the wind subsided just enough below the trees to get her on straight. :)
Nice! Way to bring her in!!
Thanks Stan!!
Great Job !!!
Thanks Derek!
Man, I thought for a minute or 2 on that approach and short final you were gonna pound that one in. Nice job flying it all the way to the runway and beyond.
Thank you Richard! It was a sporty approach for sure. :)
Guess Jaime wasn't so disappointed about missing this one after all, those long long days of flying without autopilot gives you the handling skills to pull the rough stuff off without drama, great skills and decision making, once your committed its pure flying skill..awesome Kevin
Probably the deal closer, for Jaime's not going, was seeing Kevin trying to improve the headroom over his seat. Ouch - that had ta hurt!
Awesome video Kevin! I think it's pretty neat that your local controllers all know your name! Do any of them fly? Wow that one bump you hit I thought for sure you were about to hit your head on the ceiling! I can't wait to see you next video! It would really be cool if you could do a video of a day in the life of an air traffic controller! How your day starts out, and a little tour of your job site! Of course I guess you would have to get approval for that. But I think that would be a cool video. It could be of yourself or of your wife, or maybe a little bit of both!
Thank you...glad you enjoyed it! Many of the local controllers know me as I work with a lot of them. Some of them do fly as well. I'd love to do a video from our work side but I'm not sure my employer will allow it. I may try again and see how it goes. :)
Thank you Kevin I appreciate it!
Good landing no worries. One time when I was in turbulence I actually hit my head on the top that actually gave me toothache in one of my teeth for 2 weeks.
with conditions, your a good pilot.
Now that I'm all caught up, I really look forward to Fridays - and not just the upcoming weekend!
Ha ha...thank you Kevin...glad you're enjoying them!
Very nice landing.
Thank you Gustavo!
Out of right rudder??? You’re in a twin.... push up the left motor half an inch to help. It works!!! Great flying. Really enjoy the channel.
Cram a toothpick next to that visor shaft and fill out Form 337. 😜
Damn nice landing!
Thanks Steve!
Mister you're good. Thanks.
Thank you :)
Go Kevin ! Go Twin !
great landing
Thanks Joe!
u put that plane down like it was nobody's biusness👍👍👍👍👍👍🛩🛩 and yes like i said before that visor is so fired lol
Ha ha...that visor is absolutely fired! Can't wait to get it replaced soon. Thanks Alan!
@@310Pilot that should be put in your next video think that will be a pleasing show for 😉everyone
Turbulence and Crosswind that's what I call rockin and rollin.
A "ghost visor in the sun". The thing knows exactly when to drop down-almost. Hey if you ever go back to Kentucky Dam there is a great restaurant called Patti's in Grand River. It burned last year but should be open again by fall, from what I heard. Usually very busy so i I would suggest reservations if you go. Probably less than 15 min. from the airport.
Thanks for the suggestion! We will keep it in mind for future trips down. :)
Great flying... that landing was incredible!!!! Like that little mother nature "wake up call" in the middle of your yawn lol. Probably a good thing Jamie wasn't along for that one... not sure she would have enjoyed that approach....
Ha ha...it sure caught me by surprise as my head almost went off the roof. :) I don't think she (or most people) would have enjoyed that descent/landing. :)
@@310Pilot Agreed! I was quite happy with my vantage point right here at my desk!!
Kevin, Nice job on the video once again. Landing looked as you call it a little "sporty". Kind of have to deal with them a bit when there is only one runway available. You handled it well. Only have one up here at KIWD and have had to deal with a dandy or two. While training we went to a lot of near by airports to practice as it seem for the first month to always be cross. Have a great weekend.
Thanks Mark...it was sporty for sure! One of the things I love about my home airport is they have a couple crossing runways so you can usually always find something more into the wind. It's good to practice them and stay proficient though. :)
