I struggle a lot with untreated ADHD and finishing videos. But your videos are so engaging to me, I can watch them without loosing focus and there super helpful too Thank you!
The album idea is so good. While listening to music a person goes through so many rollercoasters of emotions. I noticed the record player right at the start of the video, somehow I knew it would make it into the video.
Great advice, especially where you said to “never stop”. I decided to commit to the artists path when I was 14 and already understood the power of practice. To draw every day, whether I feel like it or not, for at least 10 minutes a day lends to better and faster progression than waiting until I felt in the mood to draw or drew once in a while for longer sessions. This attitude sent me in the right direction for pursuing my ambition of becoming a professional artist and 3 years later I started taking commissions. Logo designs, tattoo flash designs, school newspaper art turned into local newspaper editorial illustration and sequential art for Black Belt magazine during my senior year of high school. The more we do, the better we get and the real challenge isn’t landing the gig, it’s keeping the gig. Return customers are the best and if they truly like your work, not only will they come back for more art and give you more money, they also network for you and refer you more potential clients. Thanks for you transparency and sharing your gold knowledge with this stellar content.
I stumbled on this video because I just got a new monitor and I was trying to hook it up to my MacBook. I used your video "randomly" just to see if the new monitor was working. But...I got hooked on watching ....because it was so interesting! You earned a new subscriber :) !
I draw random stuff using the pen/pencil dots from tapping the pen/pencil on my paper during meetings. These are really awesome! Thank you for the inspiration 😊
This is really insightful! i just finished one of your cool skillshare animation courses and this popped up today! my phone is definitely watching me! As a 47 year old that avoided drawing for decades due to ADHD issues, i'm finding your content very helpful
Lots of great ideas here, thank you. I thought of a few variations... you suggested drawing a lyric from a song, which I love... perhaps drawing scenes from whatever book/novel you're currently reading, or from the Bible... good grief, drawing your way through every verse in the Bible? That's a lifetime of ideas there, lol.... Also, if you like to write your own stories (like I do), then illustrating your own work might be cool as well. As far as using older drawings as sketches for new iterations, I recall writing a fun children's play for Christmas one year, which we performed.... and then ten years later, for the anniversary, I re-wrote it, adding characters and scenes, and cast many of the same actors, who originally were children in the first play, as the adult characters in the newer play.... it was very cool. Perhaps it's the same dynamic? Anyways, glad I found your channel. I look forward to spelunking through your video archive....
I'd love to see a video about your daily drawing project. In fact, I just happened to watch your video on your daily drawing project, and you pointed me back here! How the turns have tabled. Or something. Thumbs up.
I accidentally stumbled across this video and I'm so glad I di. As an old man now I feel as if I need a creative outlet. Like you I would draw a ton as a kid but now not so much. But if I can grab a little free time and think today's the day I'm gonna draw. Staring at a blank page nowadays just brings out all my insecurities. So I'll tell myself I'm looking online for reference material and by the end of it I'm no longer looking for what I originally started to search for and the moment for me has passed. I personally think that getting back into art will help me out mentally and my overall well being. I think these ideas are great for someone like me to try and get my foot in the door so to speak. I guess now it's all down to me but I'd like to say Thank you for taking the time to share your path and the Pro tips. I'm along for the journey.
This rocks. Such great advice and you have a terrific delivery and personality. Like, I don't even know you, but this video makes me feel so at ease. Keep being rad.
Thank you so much for being there. You inspired me a lot. I was so lost in this illustration's rabbit hole that I couldn't decide what to do with my career & what not. your videos gave me the purpose to rebuild my confidence and pursue my career as an illustrator. Thank you, Chris ❤
Love your channel man! Very inspirational and helpful as someone who is wanting to start an e-commerce business with my drawings / photography, but have a ton to learn. Very helpful, great personality, and fun to watch! You have my full support on this RUclips channel. I feel like it is inevitable that people will catch on to your content. My brother and I would do improvised doodles, but one of us would draw a few lines and then we'd switch back and forth. We were so creative before the internet.
Ah, Chris i have done that with the drawing on a scribble wibkidz in school. I used to teach science but covered other subjects as well. I live in UK ❤.
Just bought a Apple Pencil and an iPad Pro almost an iPad mini cause your videos but I feel like a bigger one will be better for me but anyway I only got it to get into drawing and do a drawing project every day!!🙏🏼
“Hate drawing on the first page of a sketchbook” !!! I hear this so much I can’t even draw in a sketchbook at all - it’s all post-iits and loose printer paper for me 😅
I start from the last page, hoping by the end I've become a little better so the first pages have better drawings But, improving is not always a progression so no guaranteed results 😅😂
Great ideas! Sometimes, it's so blah, listening/watching to other videos or reels, etc.. which doesn't help because I feel overwhelmed and demotivated. 🤯 I will do a list based on these ideas to keep my motivation going. Notifications on! Thank you !
Though I don't like being told what to draw, these are so helpful. I came across your channel a few days ago and your videos are great for that motivational push you need on those rougher days.
Love this, also I love your style!! I'm in the beginning of an art journey where I want to draw more and the style I go for is a lot of lettering and doodles so you are a huge inspiration!!
So very happy to have found your channel Chris. Thank you for sharing your experience for those of us looking to expand upon our own ventures (professional or otherwise) late to the party, but here's some sponge-themed ideas to expand upon - sponge knob (door knob, cupboard pull, etc) - sponge Mob (either the anime character from Mob Psycho 100 or as a physical mob of people ie mob mentality) - sponge frog - pun-bob (spongebob making horrible dad jokes) - run bob (track star spongebob) - sponge lob (he's a football being lobbed) that's all that came to me :/
Sponge Bob Barker - you can get crazy with this one. Plinko board, spinning wheel, spay and neuter your pets (smaller sponge bobs with cones around their heads). Sorry for the rant.
I normally think about my sculptures and drawings obsessively while I’m bored at work. I don’t really draw much anymore after trying sculpting. Might switch to a different style or form of art to rekindle interest and get ideas flowing.
I would say getting it out of your head and onto paper is a good strategy for any artistic practice. You might find a way to incorporate sketching into the preliminary stages of a sculpture!
I've been trying this recently but I'm very much a beginner so my biggest issue was the pressure to make a full finished illustration based on a prompt. I often find out that I only have enough time in a day to exercises drawing the prompt and learn new things but not enough time or energy to finish a drawing, even if simple. x_X
well even if you don't finish the process will help you get better. Maybe you could also do one per week and add to it based on new things you are trying.
Love these ideas man! I’m probably going to try all of them out! I draw everyday for nearly 3 years and I definitely ran out of thoughts so stopped. Getting back into it regular now.
Haha! It sounds like it, but doing a 30 day or 100 day challenge is way harder. After a certain point it just becomes part of your routine. Stopping was harder than keeping it going.
