Krist is the reason I play bass. I was 10 years old and heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit", specifically the verse when the guitar cuts out. I heard the bass and immediately said to myself "I have to do that." I remember it plain as day.

Krist actually used a Jazz Bass style bass called an ibanez Black Eagle. Using any J Bass with just the bridge is pretty accurate

In 1992 Krist had a Gibson Thunderbird at the show I was at. Now in 1989 he had a Ibanez if I remember correctly

I was surprised to find out that Krist played through guitar amps and guitar cabs during the Nevermind Era tours, esp during 1992 into 93. When I saw his live rig at Reading 92, I was surprised to see Marshalls with his bass cabs. He used a HiWatt custom 100W guitar amp, 4 4x12 Marshall, 2 mesa boogie 4x10 bass cabs, and 2 mesa boogie 2x15 bass cabs during 92 era. He switched to Ampeg SVT bass cabs during the In Utero era. Apparently Krist said his favorite bass tone was from the bassist Kurt Danielson of the band, TAD. Thats why he used guitar amps and cabs to try to achieve that sound.
