Glad to find this, I'm one of those people who can voluntarily control my tensor tympani. In addition to being able to block out loud sounds -- very useful at NY subway stations -- it also enables me to unclog my ears when I get sick or go through altitude changes. The clicking noise I can make is also fun for freaking people out. When I told my GP I can do this she looked at me suspiciously.... she'd apparently never heard of this ability. So she put her stethoscope against my ear and I told her she didn't need to do that, she could hear it just by standing close. When I clicked she said "Wow that is so weird!"

In the scene where Vader force-chokes a man and says the line "I find your lack of faith, disturbing." you can hear the rumbling sound before and after he said this line. When Grand Mof Tarkin tells him to stop choking him, the rumbling sound stops. A lot of people don't pick up on this sound in older versions of the movie. The more recent version of this movie from the 90s has this rumble sound amped up more than it used to be.

I'm still not sure what he's doing physically to make that happen... When I wiggle my ears I get a full roar sound in waves, I can make a crackling sound in my ears without chewing or swallowing, and I can make the opening to my eustachian tubes (the opening in my ear) tickle or itch just by barely moving my tongue, which comes from a lifetime of using tongue movement to scratch the itching happening in my eustachian tubes caused by my dairy allergy. That's a move I learned from my mom as a kid because she has a dairy allergy as well, and watching her get relief from the itching . Get allergy stayed at the itching, mine progressed into sinus inflammation, mild breathing impairment from airway constriction, and severe migraine. So... Anyway... I just wonder what he's doing to make the "rumbling" .

Over time I was able to control both kinds in each ear (although not independently) without yawning. The first was a kind of popping sound that played some part in equalizing pressure when I would dive underwater. I can best describe it as opening and closing a sticky canal. The second was the rumbling which sounds like distant thunder. When I do this it feels like a muscle spasm in my ear.

I also discovered that if you tense the muscle and breath in without releasing, the muscle holds and you can block out loud sounds for an extended period of time without needing to flex the muscle. It’s great for passing trains or construction work

So cool to find out I'm a bit unique in this way! As someone who often daydreams, I've always used this "ear rumble" to fantasize about explosions or earthquakes. It also sounds like the T-rex's foot steps from Jurassic Park! 😂

I can do it too by scratching the top of my head, my cheeks and moving my finger around my eye. Some of my co-workers years ago knew this and this one girl with long nails would sneak up behind me and scratch my cheeks and run her fingers through my hair.

Didn’t know this was uncommon until recently. I’m able to do it and even control the “volume” of the rumble.

All of these people that have the crazy ability to move muscles most people didn’t even know existed is amazing. Imagine if there was a way to “unlock” the ability to use the muscles. Like does it just take practicing? Or are you born with the ability to use the muscles?

I would say a lot of it is Random. A big loud yawn or such, and it could happen.

As a kid, I learned how to do it and I mainly used it when walking to places and roar when I take a step like I was a giant with huge weight walking vast distances.

My ear does this on its own too. Ear doctors, plural, stated something about stapedius muscle and there is nothing to do. But I believe it’s this instead. Any suggestions ?

I’m glad I’m not crazy, I’ve tried describing what ear rumbling and clicking is and no one else understood. At least the people I spoke to😭

I've known how to do this since I was a kid!! I used it to block out loud sounds, like alarms or vacuums, and I always thought everyone could do it.

sorry for the mostly unrelated question, but could i safely use olive oil in my ears to get rid of wax? thank you for educating us on our ears lol and happy holidays!

I'm not a specialist, but I've seen olive oil used in many videos for earwax removal, including videos from this channel. I've used it a few times in the past. I warmed the oil up just slightly in the microwave (test the temp before putting it in your ear), which felt very nice and seemed to help with the wax removal.

Is it dangerous to rumble your ears when you have a perforated eardrum ? (does the hole gets bigger for example)
