As a member of the US Air Force it was a privilege to have worked in the bunker at Daws Hill. Thanks for the tour, funny it looks the same as it did during my time there, wet and cold!

I had the pleasure of getting a tour of an active Strategic Air Command base as a cadet in the early 80's. This reminds me of the cheerless, bland offices I saw there. Purely functional, and nothing more.

I was on this tour with Ian, Chris & Ben from IKS. Such nice blokes, very down to earth and we had a good chat before and after the tour. Just look out for the young lanky lad in jeans. I make quite a few appearances in this video actually.🤣 Its very strange watching back over this tour because less than 3 weeks later the country went into its first lockdown and I doubt anyone else has been able to visit this bunker since!!!

There also seems to be a mix of pre 1970's and post 80's equipment, wiring and controls. A bit of a Hodge podge in the piping where adapters have been placed to link old ducting/pipes to new filters, pumps and fans.

In those big air filter boxes in the machinery spaces there will also be multiple spaced layers of fine copper mesh that also prevent EMP charge from travelling in free air through the filters and ducting. Each vent would also have the fine mesh as a final screen and there will be dielectric spacers/joiners on the metal air ducting and electrical ducting (Generally just at a cable passthrough that will have an EMP filter mounted to a copper or stainless steel plate.
And yes I have setup and worked on such systems. I even have manuals on EMP Protection for bunkers and command shelters, mainly US in origin and dating from the cold war, but still current!

Oh and "TEMPEST" covers other things, not Radio communications. It protects against LAN systems, monitors and keyboards from having their radiation detected and decoded. So that proves that room is one of the computer server stacks in the bunker. Most of the problem has been sorted out more recently, since the 80's, by using fibre optic fed LAN and WAN systems as the cable doesn't radiate any RF at all and is dielectric so won't conduct any power or signals.

At 46:20 where Chris said "That looks like gas detection" looks more like a 7/16 RF connector on LDF 5-50 or 6-50 heliax RF cable, considering they used HF to communicate with SAC resources and other types.of high powered trancievers on that level of the bunker.
