In the mountainous rainforests and swamplands of the Darién Gap-a 60-mile stretch of wilderness known as one of the most dangerous migrant crossings in the world. Not only is the terrain extremely difficult, but people face robberies, attacks, and sexual violence at the hands of armed groups.
Eliana, Rita*, Edward, Lis, Nehemias, and Anyela, all of whom survived crossing the Darién Gap, share what they witnessed during the crossing. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is present along the migration route providing basic medical and mental health care services. Our teams treat survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, families whose children were threatened with forced conscription by gangs, and people driven to escape extreme poverty.
Disclaimer: Rita is a pseudonym used to protect the survivor's identity. All interviews presented in this audiogram were conducted in 2023, with the exception of Lis', which is from 2021.
