She was not insane so she was responsible for her actions. Only a female would get such a light sentence for murdering three children. Her lawyers tried to get her convicted only of 'infanticide', an archaic law that views women as controlled by their hormones and provides a maximum prison tariff of 3 years imprisonment when a male who committed exactly the same offence (and wasn't judged insane) would always be sentenced to life imprisonment. The infanticide ploy didn't work and Dickason was convicted of 3 murders of the most vulnerable victims by using her role and the victims' trust to carry out the crimes.
There was no justification for giving her a finite sentence that's likely to see her out in about 6 years and there was no reason she couldn't be imprisoned in an actual prison immediately. She didn't seem insane, being articulate, rational and clearly understanding that the murders were morally wrong. The only problem appeared to be current suicide risk, something prisons commonly manage.
Dickason's sentence was what is known as a p*ssy pass, reflecting the continuing inequality of sentencing between men and women for similar crimes. In turn, that reflects society's general protectiveness towards women but not towards men. The same pro-female, anti-male sexism means that females get a much easier ride through the justice process, are less likely to be prosecuted in the first place, are more likely to be referred for psychiatric assessment to try to explain and excuse their offending, and women's prisons are far more comfortable and humane than are men's prisons.

What a disgrace and Lackadaisical system of judgment. "A casual connection ..." shows J does not emphatically believe the insanity defence.
Certainly hope to see that the Crown will appeal this ridiculous sentence. Crown proved direct intent. Crown proved that she knows tye difference between right and wrong. NZ taxpayers outcry not to pay for her incarceration I believe has much to do with this ridiculous lenient sentence in a serial murder trial

She should have been. Why does she get to live in New Zealand if she couldn’t handle it from the start. She is not a citizen, she does not pay taxes. She deserves to be sent back and serve her sentence in prison. I had sympathy for her, untill I read more about this case. The family blaming New Zealand as well. Take her to South Africa.
