What an outstanding lens this is! The metal material gives it a premium look and feel, while its light weight makes it highly portable. The workmanship is of the highest standard, with every part fitting together seamlessly. The bokeh effect is stunning, adding a touch of elegance to the pictures. The lens' sharpness is remarkable, especially in the center. The anti-glare and dispersion control are excellent, making it a great investment for any full-frame user.
Thank you for the review. I was interested in ordering this lens for my Nikon ZF but was waiting for your review to make a decision. Most definitely I'm buying it.
Best content on the platform. Not talking about this review but about your channel in general. Thank you so much for doing all of this good work! Your channel is why I got into photography and how I know the real quality of gear before I spend my hard earned money on it.
It looks pretty and a bargain. Just be glad we got something like this people. It seems like all the manufacturers are just pricing higher and higher. I’d be having a hard time if I was a new photographer becoming a pro. Every one is trying to price out all the new students too
I am awaiting the same lens design, aperture click stops, square metal hood - into a 35mm F2 Fullframe AF lens for E/L/Z mount from TTArtisan, with decent optics - for less than 200 bucks, best with some weather sealing, and rubber gasket at the lens mount. Excellent review, as always, Dustin ! 😀
Great review, as usual. I've seen many asking you about a comparison against Samyang. For me, I'm more interested in adding Sigma 90mm to the comparison. I know they are quite different lenses, but I've also seen some common ones: small, lightweight, short tele with enough DoF control.
great video. very welcome use of some visual elements to waypoint the sections, does indeed help to remind me which section am i watching:) also appreciate your description of the rendering of this lens! thankyou!
Great Review, I purchased the lens after watching this & happy to report that the lens exceeds my expectations. The lens is a fantastic option for someone like myself, who only has occasional use of a portrait lens & could not really justify the cost of a premium brand. I even posted some positive feedback on the Sony E mount DPR forum, but was promptly accused of advertising & had my post, with images (taken that morning) deleted 🤔. To be fair I had just set up as a new user, because I could not remember my old login details 😆.
How about a comparison with TTartisan, Samyang, Sigma and Sony's 75 and 85mm, with some of your excellent pics... 😉 As alwyas, a very good review, with lots of details and great pics to see the actual results in many scenarios 👍🏼
The TTArtisan 75mm f/2 has become my favourite lens lately for how small and light it is, any FE options for a compact 135mm? - maybe an f/2.8 one or something?
Great review Dustin. I own the TT 56mm f1.8 and love the image quality. If this is anything like the TT56, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I love the TT56 but it is an APSc lens and I am an FF shooter. Tracking on the TT56 is lagging too. I tried some pix with my grandson running around in the playground and I had a lot of misses. For slow moving and still subjects the TT56 is fine. I imagine it is the same with this lens.
Hmmm, I would probably lean towards this one considering that the Viltrox AF 85mm F1.8, while very good optically, is probably heavier than it needs to be.
Hi Dustin. I was wondering what your thought was if comparing this to the (Yongnuo) YN85mm F1.8Z DF DSM but am unable to find a comparison review between the two. I am trying to decide between the two. Let me know your thoughts if you ever see my message. Thank you!
Hi, I watched a lot of your videos when I bought my Tamron E mount lenses. Now I am thinking of buying a portrait lens. Both of your reviews about the Ttartisan 75mm f2 and 7 Artisan 85 mm f1.8 have good ratings. Which one would you recommend. How about the MEKE 85mm f1.8 ? Thanks
Good question. Bot the TTArtisan and 7Artisans are good lenses. I don't recommend the Meike. The TTArtisan is more compact, so if that is a priority, that might be the way to go.
That said the 65mm is by far Sigma best F2 DG DN lens, still is a resolution reference at lenstip and is incredibly well corrected for almost all aberrations. Different price class but also different performance class
@@MegaWeitzel I agree. I loved the lens when I tried it at the WPPI show. It was the best of the I-series lenses. It is at $699. For $750 I can get a used Sigma 85mm f1.4 for Sony. I shot a wedding and a bunch of wide open landscape images with it. I think it is the best 85mm lens out there regardless of the price. I am looking at the 75mm f2 as a real cheap alternative. I have the TT 56 and it is fantastic. I paid only $130 for it. I am a Tamron fanboy and want them to sponsor me. I am shooting all Tamron zooms right now and waiting for them to come up with some primes I can use. Otherwise, I will go all in with Sigma primes.
I experience software issues with this lens on my Sony A7ii. The aperture change from auto to selected aperture takes forever and the lens freezes when i change aperture too fast.
This lens makes me want to get a Sony a7C again for a compact setup, add a 40mm AF lens with aperture ring and a 24mm or 28mm AF lens as well and I would be happy as a bunny.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I wish Nikon would make a compact Sony a7C like camera because Nikon Zf is just big and heavy and more expensive. Right now the Chinese manufacturers are focusing only on Z and FE mounts for their AF lenses.
Sounds like a good value, but clearly average optical performance. Somewhat awkward focal length, not sure when I would ever use it. Could be a good replacement or complement for a kit lens on a lower priced body. Well done review, as usual!
Not sure why you’re calling it average. The unusual focal length is its strength. Has nice character, fairly sharp, nice background separation, excellent colors. Why would it matter if it was on an expensive or cheap body? The person behind the camera matters more.
hey dont knock average ! in most cases its a lot better than average. Just like Samyang or Viltrox, some great options for Sony FE mount folks that dont regularly need an expensive Sony paperweight in the rucksack....
Construction full métal, performant AF, diaph ring ( Nikon shame on you and your plasticky SE line WITHOUT any aperture ring… ) and sharp… who can ask more for 200$. what is really less well done is the lens hood which seems not solid and made of too thin plastic and the 2 covers front and rear very light too. The back one includes and usb c port for upgrades but it would be better to add a normal one which could be closed more strongly. Perfect on a Nikon Zf.
I call these my shittt weather lens. I can comfortably take this out in miserable weather and use it. Id be worried about whipping out a lens that costs me over a grand.
I've believed basically everything you said for a long time, but not even mentioning any competition in a full review, not just the obvious Samyang 75, feels suspicious.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I meant in a performance/IQ comparison results way of course, not just basic stats, as mentioned by many other comments - I could have been clearer about that. Don't see how the price difference changes anything in this regard, it's quite common here and everywhere else to compare anything to everything, even with larger gaps, like with Samyangs to GMs for example. And not just to 75mm lenses, 85/1.8 being the obvious ball park competitor. And one technical thing - while Chinese cheap full metal construction might feel premium on the outside in general, it's not better for an IQ longevity when the lens is completely inflexible - it's not just about weight that most modern and even the best lenses are made from a combination of high quality durable plastics and other metal compounds. Doesn't have to be 'plastic fantastic' of course, but even that will survive more bumps and hits than a full metal lens.
Just because something is convention, doesn't mean it's not stupid. I recently saw a swathe of people on a forum iterating and reiterating how the canon rf 50mm 1.2 was clearly superior to a chinese 50mm 1.1 lens with 1/4 its element count, less than 1/3 its weight and 1/10th its price. Yes, if you pay twice/thrice/quadruple the price, you will usually get better IQ - whether your clients can notice and thus whether it impacts real world results is up to the individual professional and his print/publishing medium. But flat out expecting a reviewer to invest the time to rigorously test every comparison lens you feel relevant disregarding price is, to me, weird - especially when you can pull up the samyang review and draw your own conclusions.

If the AF is even remotely as accurate on Z-mount, I just might be able to retire my a7III from portrait use.
