Only wish criminals were this creative and stylish in real life lol
Music is too loud. Can't hear what people are saying too often.
You have to love the classics like the Riddler and the Joker, but I love the way Vincent Price portrays Egghead.
I still think Julie Newmar is the hottest Catwoman ever
"Some people kill time, but this time...TIME is going to kill you!"
I think they reached the pinnacle of villain creation back there.
These were some of the greatest actors and actresses of their time. They were able to perform and have fun. Great classic !
Far and away my favorite is the Joker--he was antic, manic, funny, campy and threatening all at once--as an actor that's not an easy thing to do folks. Cesar Romero made him his own---such a brilliant, fun characterization.
Tallulah Bankhead who played Black Widow, was dying during her Batman performances. She put on a great show despite being deathly ill.
According to IMDb, she began as a silent film actress, around 1918.
Bill Tangney More about Tallulah. She had been ill for a while with emphysema. A lifetime of drinking and smoking caught up with her. She hadn't thought much about working, then her agent suggested she do this. (He wanted her to do something to try to put some life and hope back in her.) The agent sold the role to her as, "Doing it for the children." She agreed to do it. On the set, she was quite sedate. Unlike most of her prior endeavors (such as her hysterics making The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour) she just rehearsed and played the part. She was described as a tired old lady who wanted to get through this. She was a little cranky, such as demanding they bill her in the credits as MISS Tallulah Bankhead (because that is how all real stars are billed, per Tallulah), but she was fine to get along with on the set. (Compared with Mr,. Freeze Otto Preminger, who was hard to work with.) When she wasn't on-camera, she was off to the side sucking oxygen from an oxygen tank. After filing wrapped, she left the set drained and tired. This was her last television performance. She died about a year later,
Her popeyesque mumbling performance was barely audible.
I miss Burgess Meredith and Cesar Romero, but Frank Gorshin was my all-time favorite Batvillian. He was also an awesome comedian in real life, too.
Frank Gorshin ROCKS!!
Why not turn down the music so the villains can be heard ?
man , what a glorious list of villains
I am still amazed that the producers were able to cast so many A-list actors to make a guest appearance as a bat-villain. These people were all very famous back in the 60's. Otto Preminger, Tellullah Bankhead, Ethel Merman, Cliff Robertson, Van Johnson, Liberace to name just a few, were already Hollywood legends by then.
Bookworm was such a goofy character. I enjoy watching late night TV and seeing batman come on, but I have to admit that when I first saw the bookworm I was laughing so hard at his little hat light.
Great Video!!!! I remember watching the show when I was a kid. The acting was cheesy sometimes but the villians were an A-list of who's who. Thanks for the memories.
Eartha Kitt 's Catwoman looks like Janet Jackson when she wears the mask
My favorite part of this series was when Aunt Harriet popped a gun on Liberace!
I watched every episode as a kid and forgot half of these...thanks for compiling and posting. Definitely Lee Merriweather
Even if you had never seen the show, you would be able to tell the great ones just by this clip. Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman just jump off the screen
when I was a kid growing up in england Batman was the only program on TV i would stay in for, it was brilliant. collected the a&BC gum cards too. best programme ever made and lots of my mates still talk about it to this day! There were a lot of famous actors in it too. RIP to all those creative people who made and too part in it who are no longer with us.
Aren't there any David Wayne fans out there? I thought that he excelled as the Mad Hatter. Very campy, and very menacing, all at the same time.
+Jack Grattan Yes he was. But think about this. Look at him, and look at Agnes Moorehead playing Endora. Don't they look like they were twins?
This is one of the best things I've ever come across on YT! I never missed an episode of Batman on Wed & Thur nights back in the mid-60's, and I'd forgotten about some of these villians. Everybody in Hollywood was desperate for a role at the time! My personal favs were Joker, Penguin, and Mad Hatter. And how about Joan Collins as The Siren!!!
I heard once that there was at least an idea to have two face on the show, played by a young Clint Eastwood. that made me think, what other actors at the time could have made good batman villains? ones that came to mind for me
were either Boris Karloff or peter Lorre as scarecrow, and Tina Louise as poison ivy.
Whoa that would've been badass! I love Clinty.
I agree, Julie Newmar was the hottest Catwomen
She was the one who had the real chemistry with Adam West. Lee Meriweather tried in the movie but couldn't match it. Then they brought in Ertha Kitt. It was the '60's and they didn't try to make it work.
EARTHA !
Meeeowwwwwwwrowwwwwwwrrrrr!!!!!
ol roc indeed jul 26 2014 is the day I turned
the big 50
Cosmicblast77 I remember a radio morning show did a routine about Julie Newmar.man #1: Remember Julie Newmar from Batman? Well, today is her birthday.man #2: Yeah, she's sexy. She is slinky. She is hot.man #1: She's seventy=eight.
Egghead was the best. Simply eggquisite.
Eggcelent
Well what do you eggcpect?
Using his Egg-pertese
Vincent was egg-ceptional !
I never new there was as many villains on the show.Ceasar Romero and The Penguin were my favourites
Glad you liked it! I only wish they would release the series onto dvd.
Ah, King Tut, my favorite classic villain. Wish he'd show up in something new...
Ho, I totally forgot about Bookworm and, well, most of those other ones.
Downright Awesome!!!!! Enough characters & storylines to fill a decade or more if they really wanted to.
I liked Roddy McDowell as The Bookworm. His performance turned a ho hum villain on paper into a very compelling character.
great compilation.
They were all my favorites since my childhood. Most of the time.
Fun show. In college we sat down with a note book and wrote down all of the characters. No You Tube back then.
Catwoman: Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt, Lee Meriwether (film) - Joker: Cesar Romero - Riddler: Frank Gorshin, John Astin (one appearance, not shown here); Bookworm: Roddy McDowell - Zelda: Anne Baxter - Egghead: Vincent Price - Marsha, Queen of Diamonds: Carolyn Jones (better known as Morticia Addams) - The Minstrel: Van Johnson - Louie: Milton Berle - Lord Marmaduke Ffogg: Rudy Vallee - Lady Penelope Peasoup: Glynis Johns - Dr. Casandra: Ida Lupino
Whoa egghead's Vincent Price, sweet!
False face was never credited at the end of episode featuring him but it was Malachi Throne who had a very distinctive voice.
Marsha Queen of Diamonds.Zsa Zsa Gabor also played a smillar villianess Minerva, Queen of Diamonds as well...
John Astin also played the Riddler, however he was inferior to Gorshin, IMHO
Villains are always fun and sooooooooooooooo Cool/Groovy!
I forgot about all these villains.
I believe I saw some DVDs in my friends collection, I'll have to check again
'HOLY RETRO!'
Where else you gonna find and all star cast of oddballs & oddities!
Like, groovy man.
Always liked George Sanders as Mr. Freeze.
I did...and I thought the made for tv Batman villians like Minerva, Nora Clavicle, Dr Cassandra, Lola Lasanga, Siren, Louie the Lilac, Lord Phogg, Puzzler, Black Widow were lame!
5:10 Look out, angry grandma on the loose, it's too much for the likes of Batman, Robin, AND the cops to handle!
@3dartistguy According to Wikipedia, Killer Moth was played by Tim Herbert. I remember seeing that on TV, but I thought it was just a commercial advertising Batgirl's debut.
Liberace as a villain? What a scream!
I watched this series as a kid but haven't seen the shows since that time. I forgot some of the Villains. Thanks for the clip.
Eartha Kitt died around Christmas last year.
great post, thanks for that, awesome
Nice collage! Well done!
we got enough Egghead's in DC....BATMAN for PRESIDENT! YEAH!
1:23, my favorite onetime villain, Clock King!
Jacques Bergerac was one handsome dude!
well done.!
I never new there was as many villains on the show
I only hope that this persuades fox to release the batman tv series onto DVD
Otto Preminger as Mr Freeze still cracks me up.
Damn, man, everybody was on this show back then.
I wasn't thinking about the amount of time for each villian, I simply got what I believed was the best clip of each villian no matter what the amount of time, but it couldn't be too long.
mr.freeze by george sanders.otto preminger and eli wallach.siren by joan collins.the puzzler by maurice evans.sandman by michael rennie, shame by cliff robertson, mad hatter by david wayne, false face by malachi throne
Later airings gave Malachi Throne the credit for playing False Face.
@3dartistguy Tim Herbert played Killer Moth in the unaired pilot for "Batgirl".
Yes, Archer was played by Art Canary, Bookworm aka Roddy McDowwall, Black Widow aka Tallaulah Bankhead, Catwoman, Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, Eartha Kitt; Chandel aka Liberace, ClockKing aka Walter Slezak, Nora Clavicle Ida Lupino, Col Gumm Roger C Carmel, Egghead Vincent Price, False Face/Malachi Throne, Green Hornet Van Williams, Joker Cesar Romero, King Tut Victor Buono, Louie the Lilac Milton Berle, Lord Phfogg Rudy Valliee, Lady Peasoup, Glynnis Johns, Lola Lasanga Ethel Merman, etc...
That was fun! :-)
The second Riddler that was done by John Astin was too incidental to include. It was nothing more than John Astin doing Gomez Addams dressed as the Riddler, and it was a poor performance not keeping with the REAL and only Riddler, FRANK GORSHIN. I doubt highly that John Astin remembers or even wants to remember that spot.
yes. Harry
YES, AND OUT OF RESPECT TO THE GREAT FRANK GORSHIN,THE ONLY GREAT AND TRUE RIDDLER, WE SPECIFICALLY DIDNT INCLUDE HIM.
nice list
oh well, then that explains things hahah
Frank Gorshin should of had a bigger career.....
Frank Gorshin,was a brilliant impressionist.He could mimic top stars,to a T.
Eartha Kitt ws only filling in for Julie Newmar who was busy filming McKenna's Gold.
ANNE BAXTER WAS HEADLINED AS THE VILLIANESS, NOT EKDAL.
fantastic bat villians woaaaa
@3dartistguy ---They DID air Malachi Throne without disguise in the episode on ONE shot.
@KryptonMike Yes, John (Gomez on "The Addams Family") Astin. But wonder why they didn't show footage of him as The Riddler when they showed all three Catwomans and Mr. Freezes?
The music was too loud.. As for John Astin, I thought that he was good too.
1:43 : that's Alex Rocco grinning behind Roger C. Carmel
This video is wild.
There's a whole article on the tradition of the guest star (and this show is a big participant in that tradition) in the cool new book FIFTY SHADES OF TRAILER PARK BOYS: TPB in the Great Comedic Traditions. It's at amazon now!
The story i heard was Gorshin was booked in vegas and couldn't make the shoot. Mr. astin was called in at the last minute. I think he did pretty well considering. It would have been great if he had his own character.
cool man thanx
Holy shit Harry Mudd is a Batman villain?! Yes!
There was no Poison Ivy character in the series...the only closest character was Louie the Lilac played by Milton Berle
Yes, that's the name I couldn't remember.
You poor diluted soul..you for got the second Riddler, other wise nice job, citizen...carry on, and remember always keep both hand on the bat rope
haha I'm glad they keep shows simple now with just one or two antagonists, the joker looked very similar to the mcdonalds clown haha
Bravo!! I hated every damn one of them. I remember once as a kid, I think it was the Penguin building something inside a building, u could hear banging and noise and Batman couldn't figure out what it was. I waited till the same Bat time next week and the Penguin came busting out of the side of the building in a TANK !! I though for sure Batman was in trouble that time.
1:49 Mudd's Women!
Roger C. Carmel
Thankyou for that. It was a real trip down back to my childhood. Kapow!
@3dartistguy I like the killer moth, but dude i was just messing with you shes pretty cool :)
Maybe its because Clock King, Siren, Archer, bookworm, Black Widow, Egghead, false face, King Tut, Louie the Lilac and others were made for tv villians...Adam West lamented that they should have used villians from the comics like the Mothman, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the Getaway Genius. Two Face, Signal Man and others..but right now, the producers of the new Batman movies are trying to stay far away from any aspects of the tv series as possible unfortunately. I always liked the Batpoles...
Can you PLEASE tell me where you got the music from? I've been looking for Batman incidental music for ages, it's bloody awesome.
Why isn't this show on DVD yet? Man, the owners are missing out on boatloads of money! Batboatloads!
the producers weren't interested in the comic at the time. it was pretty juvenile and they just basically ignored it. they were just interested in creating villians that the guest star celebrities could play since it was a showcase for celebrities to appear and play a villian for the chance to be mean to Batman and Robin. Unfortunatrly, the tv series got into a set formula that got tiring to the audience after a while. Only when they did break up the formula did the shows stand out.
Can you imagine if they had gone ahead with their plans to use Clint Eastwood as Harvey Dent/Two-Face? I would have chosen Tony Curtis to play the part, but Eastwood would have brought something with a bit more edge to it.
if its too loud for ya, than simply turn down your monitor sound!
Thanks Dude...unfortunately, there's nothing i cna do about the so called loudness of the background music without uploading the whole video up all over again. I tried the best i could at the time. thanks for the kind words. I loved King Tut and Egghead though, and couldn;t stand Eartha Kitt's Catwoman. They should gotten Lee Meriwhether to take up the role in the third season since she did a great movie in the movie...
The soundtrack was excellent; it was just recorded too loud.
Only a few seconds of Egghead?! I know he's a ridiculous villain, but he's played by Vincent Price! That alone should give him at least twenty seconds!
