The one thing that most people don’t seem to notice with Colin’s journal is that he’s actually describing how lonely he is. He’s talking about how physically close he got with women on his travels, but right before he comes in the study it also says that he can’t believe how distant he still feels from the women; he’s missing the intimacy and a real sense of connection. It shows that the old Colin is still in there, and that he’s still vulnerable.
He also says he's alone tracing freckles on skin. That says a lot he's literally woth a woman but he's lonely

Too many viewers are focused on the door opening rather than the words at that moment, it's a shame because as you said it displays how disconnected he feels from what are supposed to be intimate moments. Colin isn't built to be a rake, he wants to be a wifey!

I agree with Papa, Colin’s relationships are so compartmentalized in his brain that he never LET himself think of Penelope as a romantic interest (although going back to s1 and s2 he was def giving her moon eyes sometimes). Which, tbh is super respectable. Think about how many female-male friendships were ruined because the GUY expected more than just friendship.

I saw someone in a reaction mention that Eloise is the first to mention that he could marry Penelope. By asking if she's looking to him as a husband and pointing out he's eligible. Even subconsciously, that must be rattling around in his brain now.
I think its important to remember that Portia (mama Featherington) does not view marriage as a matter of love, nor as something particularly pleasant. She views it more as a business transaction that is necessary for survival. She's not trying to be mean or dismissive of Pen when she makes the comments about her marriage prospects. If anything, she's made it clear that she will continue to keep Pen with her and cared for as a Spinster, which is as close to openly showing love for one of her daughters that I think Portia can get.
Like most people, I really didn't like Portia on my first watch of Bridgerton, but having re-watched a few times I think I understand her much more now. She's a lot like Kate in S2 actually, putting the safety and well-being of her family above everything else. Portia married as a social/business transaction, not for love, so love matches aren't something she puts value on. Then she had three daughters - which, in this world, meant that all three of her children were incredibly vulnerable. Her single focus from the beginning has been securing the future safety of her girls. Also, as far as she knew prior to this season, Penelope didn't really like being in society and didn't want to get married. Portia probably thought that with the other two married and a (somewhat precarious) hold on the title inheritance in place, Pen would be happy to hear that she isn't expected to marry. Pen is also the most like Portia out of the three girls. She's smart, witty, observant, and quite able to take of herself.
Portia's comments are certainly a bit thoughtless or rude at times, but she truly loves her daughters and has done her absolute best for them.
I don’t deny that Portia loves all three of her daughters in a way but the way she treats Penelope is still quite abusive, emotionally speaking. She doesn’t know her at all because she isn’t really around in her life much and sometimes sees Penelope as a complete afterthought, thinking quite lowly of her as well. Yes she may love Penelope but she treats her even worse than Prudence or Philippa.
@@garlantyrell6368 I’m not disagreeing with you, but can you give me some specific examples of her being emotionally abusive? I remember thinking that too at first, but then on re-watch realized that I was misremembering a number of events because my impression of Portia as the “evil stepmother” (despite being Pen’s bio mother), and that trope was painting my interpretations.
Let me be clear, I’m not saying she’s perfect by any means, or even particularly good - just that my perspective on her now is more that she has good motivations but has been hardened by the realities of the world she lives in.

Portia told Penelope told Pen to put down her book as it would confuse her thoughts…..basically telling her not to read too much or just at all because back then a woman of education was seen as an enemy of society and the men. Now the way she said it wasn’t abusive and mean, but telling a girl not to read like it’s something bad like come on now.

And it gets better on rewatches too! Colin is in the trenches and all the subtle acting. It's easier to pick up on everything in a rewatch
Listen I truly believe that their first kiss is one of the most beautiful first kisses to ever be put on television. The music swelling in the background? The way his brow furrows (like wtf is going on here)? The way his hand is on her face the whole time and is just left hanging in the air when she leaves? UGH I cry *every damn time*
So, imagine me, currently in actual tears, then I hear the “euhh, brotha, euhh” sound with the math symbols in the background. I absolutely LOST it and burst out laughing. 😂🤣

The way this first kiss is the only first kiss on the show that wasn’t borne out of arguing/frustration but instead out of mutual respect/trust/adoration of the other 🤌 i.e the way Penelope was brave enough to ask for what she wanted from //him// specifically (that’s her best friend fr!) and to trust him with something that “scandalous,” and the way Colin in turn respected and cared for her enough to give her that when he refused to kiss Marina in S1 despite “loving” her, and also the both of them trusting in each other that they would not force each other into marriage over it… yeah it’s Polin for me every time 🥹🥰 absolute slay on the editing, btw!

However, Pen has always been the type who would rather shut down her feelings to avoid rejection, I think she just treated him like a bestie and that just set the dynamic for them, that’s why she can talk with him and not get flustered or always…she was not ready even in s1 she couldn’t say anything…. However in this season the dynamics change with the lessons they have to “flirt” like see each other through a different light, like COLIN TRULY DOES NOT KNOW ABOUT PENS FEELINGS and what’s funny is that now he is realizing but she still wants to marry other man …..like from Colin’s POV she’s like ANYONE BUT YOUU

Collin being a rake seemed off character. However, it's possible when he traveled he got curious & then came back to local society & knew the "expectation" of how men of his class behaved. But in the end, I'm glad they made his character arc circle back to the fact that he appreciated a deep connection in order to have sexual feelings. Collin is probably demi-sexual & I love the representation!
