In school books he is portrayed just as a european traveller who discovered sea route to Ind.
Can you let us know which book in schools portrayed him as a hero?

Very good narration. However your route simulation shows travel through the Red sea directly extends to the mediterranean sea. Those days there was no sea passage (until Suez canal was built) directly from Red sea to the Mediterranean sea. There was a overland passage from a Red sea port to the river Nile. From there goods were shipped to the Alexandira port through Nile and from there shipped to Venice and possibly to other mediterranean countries.

There was no direct sea route to Europe until Vasvo Da Gama discovered it. Before that goods from India was taken to a Red Sea port. From there carried overland on camel backs to river Nile (Egypt) and transported via river Nile to the Alexandria port on the shore of Mediaterranean sea. From there by ship to Venice. Arabs were controlling all these routes. Portuguese discovered a complete sea route to India bypassing the Arab controlled route.
