Those days there was no sea passage (until Suez canal was built) directly from Red sea to the Mediterranean sea. There was a overland passage from a Red sea port to the river Nile. From there goods were shipped to the Alexandira port through Nile and from there shipped to Venice and possibly to other mediterranean countries.

Arabs were controlling all these routes. Portuguese discovered a complete sea route to India bypassing the Arab controlled route.
