    Jason - Thanks for your help during last session with my question about sources for 40 -100 watt out, HF mobile, 12V amps. You were "spot on" and I was able to find several sources and a video review! Don't know how you retain all these details. Far superior to Wikipedia (and quicker). Grin.

    Thanks for the video Jason. I got my call sign in February and the FTM-400 was at the top of my list. I then saw a few weeks later that Yaesu was coming out with the 300 and I decided to hold off to see what this radio looks like in comparison to the FTM-100 and FTM-400. I have to say... WOW... I’m impressed... the mounting bracket is the selling point for me... I need to be able to hide the radio in my wife’s car, and still be able to swap it into my car... the quick release bracket looks like it fits the bill perfectly. Now to talk the XYL into letting me get a third (4th) radio.

    I waffled back and forwards on getting the 300 vs another 400. (I have a 400 in the vehicle.) Ultimately, I picked up the 300 for the gobox and am very happy with it. I don't think I would have been as happy if I'd put the 300 in the vehicle - I find the larger screen and the touch capabilities on the 400 much better for mobile use. (I'm sure you figured it out, but for newer viewers, the 300 does not have a touch screen, while the 400 does.)

    As a reminder MMDVM does process the protocol like a true Fusion/WiRES-X device. Better to do an example with WiRES-X as compared to using MMDVM.
    Maybe next time use it as a PDN or HRI to show the full benefit of WiRES-X.

    Agreed about the mounts and icom. Im completely new to ham radio, just got my call sign early this week (KI5JHX), and Ive installed the IC-2730a in the truck. Mounted it under the seat and it was kind of a pain not having a mounting bracket. Ive ordered two more of the 2730 for our other two trucks, but that was mainly for familiarity reasons. My wife and son are testing out first saturday in july.
    We also purchased several Yaesu ft-4x HTs for our emergency bags and general use. We did install the signal sticks on them, which seems to work well

      That really cheesed me off about Icom. I bought a $400 radio a few years back (my first big-brand radio) and was really shocked that they didn't include a bracket... Especially for the price of that radio. All that came in the box was the radio, the mic and regret. Wound up making one myself since they wanted something like $40 for a piece of sheet metal with a few holes in it. Not a great first impression... Glad to see that Yaesu didn't try that though.

    I was interested in the 300, love my 100 and 400 so I probably won't be getting one but great review! Get a GoPro style (the mount) and secure the mount in the truck (mine is on my dash forward facing) then you can just slide/snap the camera in when needed and take it out to avoid the heat. Get extra of those mounts and mount them where you want and you can move/slide/snap in and out the camera! I have finally finished routing and wiring my Jeep with VHF/UHF and HF so I look forward to your mobile install video, I hate wiring this stuff in a vehicle. I'm going to see if Bob K7PE in our Texas Nexus knows he is 'famous' yet! HA!

    One thing I discovered (to my horror) with the FTM-300D If you are using the Programming Software (ADMSv12) and have gone to the expense of the DATA cable (sold separately - of course) the Radio is okay with CLONE-ing to the software but NOT back again. If it fails to Write to the radio giving an error it will reboot the radio and zap all our settings/memories and ask you for your callsign again as if its straight out of the box. Good job I only had 12 memories in. Jason further investigation into this model required I think.

The manual set up was easy, adding frequencies was a bit foggy but i got it eventually, incuding very easy offsets, just wierd setting the tones. Once figured out, it is only a matter of doing it in the right sequences. Good little radio 👍

  • @AndrewHall08
    @AndrewHall08 2 года назад +3

    I have to say I should have more thoroughly investigated this radio before I bought it. Although in my defense, the features this radio lacks I would have thought no modern amateur radio would ever be manufactured without, and considered them to be the “power door locks and power windows” of the ham radio world. The biggest of which is memory banks. I can’t believe Yaesu would have left memory banks out of a top-of-the-line mobile radio like this.
    For those seriously considering this radio, let me save you the surprise in what this radio lacks…
    1) as stated before, memory banks. It does have a “memory group” function, which is basically the same thing as Yaesu throwing 1 measly little memory bank at you and telling you to be ok with it.
    2) when manually scrolling through your channels and you get to the end…most any radio I’ve messed with will just loop back to the beginning if you keep turning the dial. Nope, not this radio. You have to turn the dial the other direction and back all the way through your channels to get back to the beginning again.
    3) scan speed. Now I’ll admit this one is me being a bit picky, but I have an Icom 2730 that scans super fast, and then got an FT3D that scans even faster than the 2730. So I expected my FTM-300 to be the same as my FT3D and it definitely isn’t. It scans at about 50-75% of the speed of my Icom. It’s not as slow as the scan on the chinese radios, but it’s more comparable to those than it is the Icom or FT3D. I simply can’t imagine why there would be a difference in the FT3D and the FTM-300 scan-wise. If anything I would think the FTM-300 would be more capable of scanning faster.
    Jason, maybe you having the influence that you do, you could find out from Yaesu why they left these basic features out, and why they simply can’t be added with a simple firmware update. Cause I’ll be honest, with Kenwood out of the APRS game, this radio being one of the few true APRS radios left out there is the only reason I didn’t send it back. I wanted APRS in my mobile radio so without the option to get something better or different that still does true APRS, I’m stuck dealing with the issues I mentioned above.

      I can only support this statement. The feature I miss the most is the memory banks. Jason, if you have contacts with Yaesu, please get involved! I really don't understand why my FT3DE has this feature and the FTM300 doesn't. 73, de HB3XVA

      I hate to say it but seems like Yaesu's point man on North American sales seems to have a really bad attitude when you ask questions or point out things that aren't so great about their rigs. So I doubt there's anything that y'all can ask them that will actually get a decent respectable answer or fix.

  • @applejacks971
    @applejacks971 4 года назад +6

    One thing I'll never understand is why all the stations talk so flippin fast. I don't even bother monitoring when in Omaha anymore because 1, everyone talks too fast and you can't decipher their call, 2, they hold the mic on their lap or on the desk and think that they can be heard, and 3, they either pull the mic away or turn away from the mic before ending their sentence so their voice drifts in to nothing and you can't hear their final words anyway.
    1. Slow down, there's no fire, this isn't a race.
    2. Talk IN TO the mic, not at it, and not just at its general direction
    3. Talk IN TO the mic until you've finished speaking and release the ptt.

      @@HamRadio2 I have, and it is extremely annoying. I also use a commercial LMR 800 MHz APCO-25 radio system at work, and we have operators in our control center that have absolutely no idea how to talk into a radio. They are always clipping themselves out due to an inability to coordinate the action of a PTT switch with their voice. And the fact that there is some built-in latency between the time they press PTT and the system is actually fully "up" -- and they are are either not aware of this or keep forgetting about it, means I'm always asking for repeats, or giving "radio class" on-the-air to people who are already supposed to know what they're doing. That's a laugh!

    Hey Jason, I am back looking for information on the 300 as I am considering it over the FTM-400 due to the cost. I see the 400 has a larger screen and the 300 comes with a blue tooth module standard. What I would like to know is the differences in functionality between the 300 & 400. I am interested in programming the radio for repeaters in a radius for different trips. I noticed Josh at HRCC had someone program his new FTM-400 with a RT Systems software on a tablet and they used the capability to program repeaters in a radius which named them as city names instead of call signs. I will look for more videos with this. For now, I am hooking my Anytone 878 with a lido mount for mobile VHF. I like the 878, just cumbersome to add channels on the fly when on a trip. I also am interested in Fusion due to many commenting on the popularity of that. The DMR repeaters are hard to reach in the Greenville, Texas area so I hope Fusion repeaters will be more available. Sorry to be so long winded. My wife says I have the gift of gab. Haha. All the best, 73 de KI5HXM

    I have a FTM-400 for the car right now. I have been considering a FTM-300 for the car. Financially I could afford a second 400, and am still trying to decide which one to get. The 300 is a bit more compact which would be an advantage with my mobile install but the 400 would be much easier to read with my aging eyes. The Bluetooth would be nice on the 300 but the 400 can be upgraded to Bluetooth. It would be nice if Yaesu made a Bluetooth wireless mic (not an earpiece) for their rigs. .I need to investigate all the features in the 300. In your review you said the 300 does some things that the 400 wont do. I will see what those features are before deciding. The 400 has been out for a while now and I often wonder if Yaesu will come out with something new for a flagship radio.. In any event I am still going back and forth on which one to get. I already have one 400 and know it well. But sometimes newer rigs can have certain advantages too...

    I like the bigger buttons on the FTM 300 better than the ones on my FTM 100. The buttons on the 100 are very small and difficult to use mobile if you have large digits. The whole unit was mounted in the small package tray on the top of the dash, right below eye level.The buttons with printing on them were way too small to use while mobile. And the raised dividers nubs between the buttons made it even more difficult to operate-if you have large digits. I replaced the 100 with the FTM400 a year ago when they were on sale. Food for thought, maybe find someone that is willing to put of of these radios in a 18 wheeler and see how they fair in a sometimes bumpy and vibration riddled environment seeing how the screen dosen't hold well or could be a fluke with just that one . I drive a truck and getting my license soon and would be putting one in my truck, any suggestions would be great.

      I think Yaesu did the menu thing to "open up the VW mode on the FT3D and FT70D. Not sure why. The FT2D I have dies VW right out of the box. One plus with the FTM300 is that it CAN simultaneously decode 2 separate C4FM signals, one on each band. I believe it has to vocoders in order to achieve that. The FTM 400 cannot even go into digital mode at all on the B band. 73's and thanks for the review!

    This radio occupies an odd space in the market- For me the question becomes why not, for a little more, get the FTM-400, or for a little less, the 100? Though, this does seem more feature rich than the FTM-100.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  3 года назад

      They've discontinued the FTM100 so that is no longer an option for a "new" radio. I was disappointed by this because I liked the 100. Comparing the 300 to the 400, I would say the 300 fits a niche for folks who have less space in their vehicle to mount a radio, or who don't want a remotely mounted faceplate. The 300 faceplate attaches to the radio, or can be mounted remotely, while the 400 is only a remote option. It does seem like a narrow target audience they are going for, but nevertheless, this is what we have now.

      @@HamRadio2 The FTm 300 allows both Bands to operate at C4FM ar the same time. Allowing monitoring Hotspot and repeaters at the same time. Cross band repeat can use C4FM on one side. The short connector cable goes from a horizontal orientation in the main body to a vertical orientation in the head causing it to twist. The connection port in the body should have been made so it's in the same [vertical] orientation as the head so the cable sits flat between the head and the body. So, does the head keep coming off the body easily or didn't you have it clicked in properly? I would say that is an extremely important issue, but you didn't cover it properly!!!!! If the head keeps falling off at the slightest bump, that would be an absolute deal breaker for me.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  4 года назад

      The cable was seated properly. The head does come off pretty easily by bumping it. The radio is really made to have the head remote-mounted anyway, so most people wouldn't care. Also it is likely that other units don't have this flaw, it is unique to the unit that I got.
