In this video, we are going to change a Capcom CPS2 arcade game suicide battery in less than a minute! That's right, we are going to replace the half AA 3.6V Lithium suicide battery in a Super Street Fighter II Turbo in less than one minute! Normally, you have an hour to change this battery after you remove the battery. In this video? We are going to change the battery in less than one minute! Crazy, Right? :)

Also in the video, John and his pal, Matt McCarthy (The Kill Screens and Tomato Interactive) will play some Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Everyone says this is the best Street Fighter game ever? Is it true? Watch as these Street Fighter noobs try to find out! :)

John just learn to block. That's the secret. Your whole gameplan in SF starts with being able to block.
That SF2 blue and black case looks exactly like my Capcom X-Men Children of the Atom. I had no idea about that horrible battery. Thanks for the heads up John. I better check mine out. I think I'll also write the date it was changed on the blue shell.
AdamDIY you can phenix them now the encryption is broken. Though some silly purists don't like this.
No idea whsts so desirable about a game that can kill its self once the battery drains.
For things like this I tend to wire a charged battery up in parallel (using different solder points), remove old battery, install new charged battery, then remove parallel battery.
+GadgetUK164 That seems natural to me, top tip! Are the batteries not trickle charged too, when the board is powered? Just a thought?
Arcade restoration is a lost art now days. Arcade archiving and restoring is a passion of mine as well. Love you videos.
love how track and field said on your mark just as John started fixing the board hahahha
On your mark, ... get set, ..... (Perfect timing soundtrack)
good video. what a dick move to have that suicide battery. then they encase the board. then they put warranty tampers on it. capcom musta been paranoid.
A few quick notes on things mentioned in the video:
the motherboard is the A board, the game is the B board
James at JNX still makes the CPS1/2 harness adapters, they're the best you can get: www.jamma-nation-x.com/jammax/store.html
the security bit is a T20, make sure you get the security version that has the recessed middle part
you mention the low plays on the coin counter - this version of SF2 came out when the game was pretty much 'dead' in the arcades, it was only later that it got the competitive play it has now
piracy of CPS boards was a big deal - SF2 Hyper Fighting was a direct response to the 'Rainbow' hacked versions, the encryption of the CPS2 was an effect of this - CPS2 is really not that much different in architecture from CPS1 (you can see this if you compare them side by side)
the main difference between HF and ST is the addition of four characters and also the super combo meter - turbo 2 is the correct speed for this game, turbo 3 in the Japanese (green) version
E. Honda and Ryu are good beginner characters
You have a sweet setup. This would be like a bucket list item for me, to just have a couple of arcade games I grew up in love with. Like a table version of PacMan. Also would like to have a Tempest, Battle Zone, Bump N Jump, Q-bert.
Love the 3DO version of this. Suicide batteries are really a pain in the ass, too. I thought it would destroy the code immediately as soon as the battery is removed, though. I guess I was wrong.
Hey John! Thanks for another great episode! You are always so charitable, it's much appreciated! :D
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
There should be an 'event mode' option in the test menu. Both players will return to the player select screen after a 2 player match, and both players will be able to choose their characters. :)
NICE!! You should add a micro amplifier for the Qsound (stereo). You would have to add another speaker to your z-back, i have done all 3 of my z-backs to stereo capable Lots of good choices for games on the CPS2. I would recommend Super Puzzle fighter II if you or your wife like puzzle games.
I like this idea.
Lovely episode John! It was very nice to meet the other half of The Kill Screens. :)
John, if you take the time to learn the basics of Street Fighter II, you'll love it as much as Donkey Kong. Learn a character. Pick one that you think is cool and learn his/her special moves as well as what the different punches and kicks do. Most importantly, don't button mash. Kick/punch deliberately. Get a feel for the different range (this is key) that the punches and kicks have so you can poke at your opponent and defend yourself or counter attack when they whiff a move (example:when Matt does all of those uppercuts with Ryu, trying to intimidate, wait till he does one, then hit him with a big punch or sweep as he's landing).
If you can manage that, then you can move on to learning some combos (chaining punches/kicks and moves together). You can find all of this in FAQs. It sounds daunting, but it isn't, and you don't need to be a pro to be able to be decent and have some fun.
I almost thought over the course of 3 false-starts that he was going to end up starting at the same time as the Pole Position starting jingle. Maybe in the future, we'll have such luck.
The video set looks really neat. That is nice of you to pass it on to your subscribers. Whatever happened to the phone you had to give away? Did I miss a video?
John!
Keep up the great work!
Thanks for mixing it up with Matt!
that sounds so cool john love your videos
SF2 is still the best fighting game to this day. nothing comes close.
Your friend just Kicked your butt when he beat you when he played as Ryu. But don't worry. You'll get better to win to play by yourself or with friends next time if you just keep on Practicing until you get better at it.
Finally a SF2 video! Great pick up Johnny Boy! Street Fighter Alpha 2 or Marvel vs Capcom are my favorites
John COMMIT yourself to this game, it'd be cool to see you beat people down at that game in your basement
I wish i never sold my II turbo i sold it on ebay for $425 so i couldnt complain. Great video man!
+Paul Tiffany wish i fixed my marvel super heroes vs street fighter before the battery died :(
That sucks you have to keep replacing that battery after a while but at least it's easy. I once borrowed a CPS2 with Alien Vs. Predator on it and played it for a while, such a bad ass beat em up game. Really surprised it was never released on a home console.
My Friend always plays as Fei Long when we play any street fighter games and one time at retro arcade place, When He and I play Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, I've beat him when I played as Dhalsim when I was doing Yoga Fire, Yoga Flame, the Drill Until Finally, I throw him when there was so much damage
You're no King Of Chinatown, Johhny.
This guy took the time to make you a set of DVDs and you MIGHT Keep one? That not very nice and seriously disrespectful.
Just pretend you appreciate it and love them.
+Richard Herzog So he actually built that game and someone made that in to dvd collection and John didn't ask him to do anything right? I think you are trying to make this bigger thing than it really is.
Huh? He knows I want to give them away. We already talked before he sent them. Cbart is a cool dude. I'd rather a fan have them.
I don't need to. He already knows.
I think its awesome that John is willing to give it away. He knows some of the viewers could really benefit from it.
Hey John. I get the feeling you have more fun taking apart systems than playing them. IDK, maybe not the best idea to rush the solder work. I saw that screw bit under the bare circuit board, could have wiped your roms out there John, tisk tisk...
couldn't you have connected another battery in parallel to power and ground on another place on the board while you replaced the other battery so it would be continuously powered
Wow, I went back and looked at some of your very first videos posted 7 1/2 years ago (eventually I'll have all your posted video watched, but that's gonna take a *long* time, hahaha), and that arrangement is WAYYY different from how you have things now! I mean your desks are about the same way now as they were before, but the rest is totally different (except all it looks like you did with the "red tent's" location is that you just moved it a few feet from where it was before).
You've come a long way in 7 1/2 years! Where did you move all the stuff in those cardboard boxes to (don't say the garage, because I don't see all this other stuff in there either)?
I wish I was there to play some SF with you guys. Love that game.
Me too!
+mokthemagicman Me too, Mok! Time to rock some killer DeeJay combos -jimbodeanny
Sorry John, I have to think this purchase was at least partially my fault! Thanks for getting it so we don't have to bring it anymore :) Let's play soon!
Lol! This might be true. :)
I love watching john and I've watched him for a long time, but if this dude ain't on aderall or some kind of speed, I will kiss someones ass
+jimmyjackz ha! Drug free, bro. Prepare to kiss some butts. :)
Matt looks a lot like Jimmy Fallon for some reason.
The Super SF2 non-Turbo one is my fave. It got too complicated and fast after that, they removed my fave Ken moves and added the annoying power meter stuff, and the computer AI was cheap as hell and made it frustrating. Champion Edition second fave. Hyper was the worst.
I would like to see the Voltage of the Old Battery.
Nahhh you've got quite a while before the PCB loses it's charge from the battery. A minute won't hurt, I think it takes quite a few for the PCB to die out before the game has to be phoenix'd in order to work again (changing the coding of the roms to no longer require a battery).. But as long as it's working!!
..Just dont wash down the board with water, especially the battery.... i made that mistake.. now mine has to be phoenix'd lol
wow what a dick move by Capcom lol
At least these can be revived now
Razoola figured it out.
Matt! Wow anit seen a clip of him in long time! if me and John played it woulda took 30 mins a match. I SUCK at SF
+Bobby Jack Ha! I am soooooo bad. :)
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech commit yourself and learn the basics first like countering and combos before memorizing move lists
truly a classic, although i prefer the soul calibour and guilty gear series :D
hey tell your viewer to make another box set dvd of the journey restore.
The monitor is fully working in the sf cab now? did I miss a video?
Need this box set.
I was looking into replacing my battery and this video popped up. I know you said yours was never open but the carriage bolt looks suspicious. Mine has a bolt that had to be drilled.
And you can play as the old colors
Unlock & play as akuma
John are you interested in street fighter 5 ? it so there is a another reason why you should get a ps4.
I may buy the journey dvd box set for $20.00.
Got a link to the cps2 battery from amazon? I need to do a Alien vs Predators CPS2 board. Thanks!
+assblastic Here you go! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007Z8462I?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00
Hannuka was founded on a oil lamp which burnt for days longer then it should.. Concidering that suicide battery lasted years longer,,, shouldnt we celebrate Street Fighterika?
Hey John any idea how to get a Super Turbo cab in the states? I'm trying to get one but it seems impossible. Japanese or US version it doesn't matter.
You should look for a red Z-back cabinet or a Capcom big blue cabinet then go get the board. It's gonna be the easiest route.
Wow thx so much for the fast reply John. I have seen some Japanese boards(the green ones) on ebay for around $500. Would I need to get both the A and B? Also some were phoenixed and some weren't so is there a better version? Isn't the original game better? Sorry for the dumb questions.
You need A+B to make it work. I believe the Japanese version has better AI. But someone, smarter than me can clarify. Phoenixed are hacked roms to bypass the suicide battery. I don't mind them. Less to worry about.
Screw data-saving batteries in general.
Omg please stop yelling at me.
WHAT
Street fighter III THIRD STRIKE is the best all the purists play that
+Carlo Pepi This game is on my radar and I have been watching the prices. I want it. :) It looks AMAYZING!
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech, Well I see you got your SSF2T board from your friend like you said so I guess we won't be trading and what I wanted was the TMNT 2 player PCB you had in your machine. I still got 2 SSF2T boards in stock and soon i'll be getting the 30th Anniversary Edition board and that is the grand daddy of them all so i'm excited to get that. :)
I hope you enjoy your new SSF2T board and i'm gonna tell you this, that board will kick your butt if your not good at it but for me it's easy and I always have it set on the hardest difficulty. Your talking to a pro when it comes to Street Fighter 2 games and i also been in a Tournament for that and Mortal Kombat 2 so good memories for me back then.
If you ever sell your TMNT and any Street Fighter boards then just write to me here and i'll buy them from you.
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech, Yup once again you couldn't reply or say something nice to my easy message and I don't know why I even bother.
Writing To John = Hopeless!
+Frosty Mike Not really. :)
No comment, end of story. :)
What's up? :)
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Oh now you want to talk to Frosty, well you can go right back up and read my long message I left you about you selling your PCB boards that's if you don't want them anymore and I know you don't play them and I need them to my collection. :)
WHY
Get mortal kombat
An arcade guy who doesn't know shit about Street Fighter 2. Weird.
Street Fighter II: Turbo is the best game in the entire series. SSFII: Turbo is, for all intents and purposes, SFIII, and is the least best in the series.

+Go Ahead IS THIS THE CRYPTIC GUY EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT?!
