    I agree with Martin on this one. As someone who used to be fat, people telling me about my weight did not help. Like Martin said, I already knew I was fat. Part of that was because I had a thyroid issue that slowed my metabolism. You never know what someone is going through or what reason they have for being overweight. I'm not a doctor, so I don't feel like it's my place to give anyone unsolicited health advice.

      I agree with you and Martin but I also don't think that is what Corey was saying. Yes people already know so there is no point in telling them but it's also unhealthy mentally for you to tell that person you are fine the way you are when they are clearly unhealthy. That can take away the incentive to lose weight and create delusion. Yes in your case you had thyroid issues so it's tougher but in any situation there are outliers. I think Corey is trying to bring attention to that other side of people that don't have anything like a thyroid issue that get delusional and lose incentive to become healthier because they start to believe it is ok

    • @anjolatope-babalola2338
      @anjolatope-babalola2338 5 месяцев назад +1

      If you don't want to give advice that's fine
      I really hate it when people say, I am not a this, so I cannot speak about that.
      This appeal to authority fallacy is really annoying, if you don't know enough on a topic and you don't want to speak on it, that is fine.
      But it's hypocrisy to have a standard, where you must be an expert on a topic, before you can give your opinion on something, no body follows that rule of thumb, not even the person that says it, you just don't want to speak on this issue
      Also, all this authorities are human, then can be wrong, and motivated by bad reasons to lie.
      Humans also have a vast amount of information, to do some basic research on issues
      A big problem in the world is people just defere thier thinking to experts, they use it as an excuse not to think or to hide behind an opinion (because an expert said so)

      I'm with Martin. There are slim people who look healthy and have genetic factors that make them not as healthy as you think. Halle Berry has diabetes, Chadwick Boseman died of cancer even though he exercised and lived a healthy lifestyle. The super-sized me guy just died recently. I'm not saying obesity isn't a problem. It's just easier to judge or put down someone who is big because you can see what they're dealing with or assume what's the problem in our society. Many times, it's genetic factors as well. Plus, there is a lot of unhealthy food out there, and you have to eat to survive. Unlike someone just having a bad habit like smoking, alcohol or drugs, even though the same pleasure part of the brain affects all of it. Things affect people differently. Sorry about my long reply!😊

      @@damonpatterson8293I agree 100%. The thing is people should love themselves regardless and I’m not saying that means stay unhealthy but you’re unlikely to stick to healthy habits if you put yourself down or don’t love yourself on the journey. People just get burnt out that way imo. Everyone is worthy of self love and part of that is also self improvement. And self improvement isn’t likely if you don’t think you’re worth it

Korey is not looking at Dwayne Johnson (Who eats unhealthy portions of food, abuses steroids and has had MULTIPLE surgeries to repair his body) and thinking "Damn dude, you're unhealthy!" Not to mention if people are old enough to remember the '90s people were perfectly okay with women starving themselves to death to be aesthetically pleasing to be a size zero was considered hot then and people weren't talking about how unhealthy these attractive girls were by societal standards. People smoke drink take drugs don't take care of their bodies but when it comes to being overweight it's considered the highest of crimes.

    • @MadArtLang
      @MadArtLang 5 месяцев назад +14

      Martin is making a good point be where is the line? Even culturally and ethnic people have different body shapes that are tendencies. For example in the medical world Caucasian bodies are considered standard. A black body which is usually bigger in structure and curvier may be considered unhealthy inherently. Or an Asian person being "underweight" or look at some Samoan bodies. The point I'm trying to make is how do you determine which is too big? Sure we can agree 600 lbs if you can't move from you bed is bad. But I'm a size 16 to my doctor I'm obese, in Asia I'd be considered huge...and among most other Black people I'm considered slimmer...all I'm saying is what is the standard and who can determine that? It's bullying at some point bc it's just like why is it considered the worst kind of unhealthy, bc women are made to think they have to be whatever society says is beautiful everyday by any means necessary. People aren't fat just bc of overheating...it is a complex nuanced topic.

      I think the over all goal of body positivity should be to embrace the healthy version of your own body and re-enforce the healthy habits to maintain it at best you can. When schools started it we began by BMI measuring teachers first. Almost everyone was shocked that all of us teachers were at least overweight and over half were obese, with a couple absolutely astounded they were morbidly obese. I knew I was a bit heavy but had no clue I was boarder line morbidly obese. BMI is a garbage system but often people have to be told their health is in danger by loved ones, or schools, because Americans don’t know what a healthy weight looks like on a scale.

I grew up with a vegetarian sister and a mom who didn't cook or prepare red meat for us. When I would stay with my dad (who very much ate red meat) we ate a salad with every meal and I went to the doctor and dentist twice a year. To this day, I've never been overweight in my life, but because of my disease, I am in no way healthy and I have had the misfortune of watching people of all age groups, genders and races die or experience traumatic health decline while I spent a great deal of my adulthood in & out of hospitals or dialysis centers. If I had a dollar for every new patient that would either be admitted to a hospital ER or became a patient at dialysis center, exclaim that they "don't know how this happened" and they've been healthy they're whole life, and they exercise X amount of times a day, well I would be sitting rather pretty as a damn millionaire! I doubt you'll believe me, because I've seen way too many people go into full denial when it comes to illness and disabilities, but the idea that you can do everything "right" and come ahead, is an illusion. People with your attitude are in my experience, always the first ones to crack under pressure when their life changes overnight, and usually handle things the worst because they can't accept that a healthy existence isn't guaranteed just because you think you're doing everything "the right way."

    I know I’m way late but I agree with Martin! She didn’t come off upset, she came off as laughing it off.
    And body positivity is not just telling people it’s okay to be big, it goes beyond that. Martin I applaud you for getting your point across!

    The weight discussion in the USA is on another level than in the rest of the world, because the US combines the most unhealthy food with very bad healthcare.

    If the fast food industry (one of the biggest in America) wasn't making alot of money off of obesity,big pharma will..And shopping to eat healthy is a m'fer too..Just try to shop at a Healthy Foods grocery store!! I DARE SOMEBODY!! The industry makes it expensive, but not impossible, to eat healthy.

    Lizzo reacted to something that was tame. South Park could've easily used the accusations as material and all the times she's done stupid stuff in public (putting her bare ass on a public seat at a basketball game)

    As a fat woman. I am body positive because I cannot make an instant changes to my body, I have pcos and insulin resistance which makes weight gain difficult to maintain and I’ve been on meds. Before my diagnosis I was told I was fat by doctors my entire teenage years when I wasn’t even remotely overweight. I was athletic and musclar but was told to lose 20-30 lbs every doctor visit. My diet was restricted and I was made to work out more than 5 hours a day. That has caused to too binge eat in secret and fast. Overall it ruined my relationship with food and I began to gain weight after my grandmother died and we moved to another state. Now I’m actually obese. I accept how I look and have gotten to a point in my life where I genuinely do not care what people think. I wear what I wear and I look how I look, whether folks like it or not. I also accept that I need to lose weight to be healthy, however It’s not anyone else’s business or concern what my health issues are, because if I were skinny and a pothead no one would care about my “health.” I know that I am fat and I am getting the help I need from medical professionals, I don’t need or like being constantly reminded of something that I am already aware of. So many folks think they are original. As a fat person, I’ve probably been told about 300 or times that I’m fat and I need to lose weight because it’s “unhealthy.” People who feel the need to humble me, don’t see me starving myself for weeks, losing and gaining 20-50 pounds over and over again, or being medically neglected. They don’t care if I have ED, if I am losing weight in a healthy way, if I lost an ovary, or if I made any progress, they just hate that I’m big and there’s nothing else to it. These folks don’t give a damn if I live or die. I am beautiful and based on how men treat me, I know that I’m very attractive despite being obese. Without recognizing that beauty, I would never have the confidence to go to the gym, hop in the pool, roll into a skating rink, or jog around the neighborhood. When I was a teenage girl being misdiagnosed with being borderline overweight, I was embarrassed to do any physical activity in public bc I was being told I was fat by the people closest to me while my peers never saw me as such. As a result my self esteem dropped, my motivation for physical activity decreased and my motivation to binge increased more.

    One reason so many people are overweight in this country is because healthier food is so damn expensive.

    I like what Nicole Byer said, "Everyone has fat, some just have more than others." Fat doesnt automatically mean "obese" and "unhealthy". Skinny doesn't automatically make you healthy and more beautiful than fat people. Bodies are bodies and everyone has the right to love themselves for themsleves. And nobody comes up to you randomly saying, "oh man, you're a good looking person despite you being thinner. I'm concerned with your health." So what makes you think you have a right to go up to fat people who DID NOT ASK YOU A DAMN THING and give your opinion about your false worry? Also, the scale at which we judge health is still vastly outdated in that we compare everything to the anatomy of adult white males. Lastly, that clip of Lizzo's reaction did come off a bit defensive, but I hadn't seen the whole video so I can't read it for sure without the entire context.
    Yall should listen to Trevor Noah's podcast where they he actually brings in an expert who has studied Ozempic and they discuss more so the social aspects, past and present, surrounding weight within America and compared to other countries.
