- Learned lots in this episode, the hard way. Wiped out the cam, could have been that I didn't add zinc additive, could have been the multiple failed start attempts, maybe just a bad set of lifters, or a poorly hardened cam. Nonetheless, I'll be pulling the motor again, going through everything cleaning it. Got parts coming, I won't let this defeat me!

Remember kids always take your ZINC. I'm about to pull my 401 because I lost #7, going to set it aside and take my time rebuilding it. In the mean time I picked up a 360 that (supposedly) has 15k 🤞. Love the realness of your channel, you got another sub here and inspired me to film my days of P/V. 💪🔧
Thank you! gonna try again next week, pulling the motor Friday. Good luck with your project!
Hopefully not 115k if the odometer flipped once lol😂
Much easier to get that engine out if you remove the front wheels and set them on the ground 🙃🙃
I think it is a joke. So are you. Dum@# a$$
Best cam I've ever ran in a AMC 360 is the Comp 268H . Excellent all around cam for the 360. Really wakes them up and provides a noticed improvement in fuel economy as well
My next build will be with name brand parts, I’d love to put a 401 in it, just gotta find the right deal. So far the replacement cam it doing good. I do need to find a dual plane intake, this torker II is a pain for wheeling!
The 268 is close to a standard production cam max power 5000 ,why do you need such a mild cam? A 230 @.050 whould be 5600 is that much too hairy?
You have the best AMC 360 content that I can find on the internet, its a shame because there's so much to know with these engines I need all the help I can get!!! and we're all on a budget, it would be cool if someone with deep pockets and a bunch of experts could go over all the procedures and processes to remove rebuild refit and run an AMC 360, especially with all the interest in Wagoneers these days
Thanks! That’s encouraging! I’m wanting to build a 401 now for the Jeep, a full on rebuild this time though so stick around, it will happen one day!
thanks for making these videos man, currently have a 360 in my 81 cherokee chief so its nice to find newer videos of people working on them
No problem! I like making them, hopefully the next one goes a little better haha. Thanks for watching!
big chief + badass built 360 = AWESOMENESS!!
thanks

watching this over my morning coffee. im about to head out and wrench on my 78 SJ. thanks for the morning motivation!
Hopefully you have better luck!
I've tried a Summit brand cam & lifters twice in my 30 + years of building engines , cars , 4x4 etc. Both times the cam and lifters failed even with proper break in and oil. I have never had another brand cam failure luckily. I buy a lot of parts from Summit . I just stopped buying Summit Cam & lifter sets as well as their Timing sets. Their timing chains stretch rather excessively and they do it pretty quickly as well. 30k on the last build using their timing set and it was stretched worse than 200k core engines ive tore down. Stay reputable name brands on parts. It's just good insurance in my experience
Good luck with the next build mate! Going through an AMC V8 over here in Australia myself, so was very interested to come across your build!
Cheers mate 👍🏼
Thanks! Are parts hard to come by over there? I’ll be putting it back together next week when we get back from the Underpowered Tour. Got the parts back from the machine shop and the short block assembled! Thanks for watching!
Nice man, exciting times ahead!
So far they arnt tooooo bad, but I am limited. I would have liked to run maybe alloy head or atleast a new intake manifold but unable to find that local yet… would like to buy within the country. But we’ll see.
Hopefully it’s only a few weeks away 🤞🏼
@@TheIronEmpire from what i've read the factory heads actually flow pretty good, but I guess you could get a little more compression with some aftermarket heads. What's your motor going in?
Sorry to hear that you lost the cam, hope it is not a comp cam and lifter set they have been having material issues with them
It was a summit cam. got new parts coming already, pulling the motor friday and hopefully have it back together by the next weekend!
And a better flex plate!
yes for sure!
Lol had to drill out my alt also on my 401
Did the engine just suddenly stop running in the driveway? I got a rebuilt 360 that I installed and did the break in procedure. After breaking in the cam I drove the vehicle 50 miles then came home and the engine died in the drive way. Been trouble shooting this issue for the past couple weeks. But now I see that some of my rockers are just as loose as yours.
No we shut it down when we heard the noise. Really sucks. What cam do you have?
@@DaysofPainandVictory I have the comp cam 270H
Damn dude that sucks. I got a crate longblock, block needed sleeved on the last one. Used the provided lucas high zinc break in oil, sat at whatever the rpm the cam break in sheet siad to then it ran real rough near the end and she shut off. Fucker locked up tight. After getting pissed and talking to my grandpa over the phone he talked about how 1 of the 3 times he rebuilt the 327 in his 67 wagoneer it stalled on him and locked up. Let it cool from operating temp to cold and it ran fine. He thought the clearances might be very tight. Turns out a vacuum line started leaking so we fixed that and let it cool. She fired up and ran great around the block, its been a few thousand miles, all the modern cars were broken so be and my dad loaded my 81 cj7 to the roof with tools and luggage and traveled 3 hours north of me to meet and help a contractor. She ran great, put about 700 miles on her in less than a week and she ran there and ran back like a champ!
My 360 is rebuilt but previous owner left a rats nest of wiring and splicing. In the process of getting a new wiring harness wired up
I'm trying to tell if you're excited!
haha, excited in the beginning, then it went downhill...
Who wants to buy a 1979 jeep cherokee wagoneer, runs and drives with a amc 360, turbo trans, sitting on 33's, all time four wheel!!! IM ONLY ASKING BECAUSE OF THIS GUY OWNING AN OLDER JEEP SIMILAR TO MINE AND INTRESTED IN SELLING FOR $3,000
Did you use zinc or breaking engine oil ?
no, pretty sure that was the issue. got it back together and it runs great, check out the latest video on the AMC 360 build
Why don't you move to the country. You could have a good shop, and you could work on more than one car or truck at a time.
I did! This was an interim place after we sold our first home. Here's the new place! ruclips.net/video/KcHtFpHVM7U/видео.html
You really need a tripod and magnet mounts for your camera
I use a couple different tripods regularly, I'll have to look into the magnet mounts
Bummer about the cam. Any idea why?
I didn't use zinc additive, didn't know I was supposed to, so that could be it. Also we had several failed attempts to fire trying to get the timing set correctly, but we weren't really cranking on it a bunch so I don't think that is the case. I marked the distributor where we had it before I pulled it so we should be able to get that first try now. And I'll be getting the zinc additive! Should have the next attempt on here in a couple weeks!
Aslo could have just been a bad set of lifters or a poorly hardened cam, who knows, anyway, new parts are coming!
All that smoke isn't Normal at all. It's fucked
Yeah just got the block and crank back from the machine shop, we’ll give it another go!
@@DaysofPainandVictory oh have you stripped it all down? Have I missed a video?
That video is still in progress, I’ve tore it down so many times on the channel now that I’m trying not to be too repetitive haha. Hopefully in the next few weeks I’ll have it back in the jeep
Sure am ready to start wheeling again though, it’s been too dang long!
