I got my hands on the 2004 "School of Duel - Advanced Duelist" DVD and decided to watch and react to it! Is it as bad as it sounds?

If this was made now a days, it would have to be a 50-disc Blu Ray set
Explaining missing the timing would be it's own bluray
@@Drilbitthe Dark World special ...
you should make it :p
bruhh the link and syncro summons i would need a whole box set i tried learning it this week it just annoyed the hell outta me i made a deck i could understand instead 😭🙅🏿
The pendulum arc
This was truly the golden age of media. The wild west, yet easily shared.
The dad coming in to get a lesson reminded me of a younger kid at my locals whose dad came & entered tournaments as well. They both played D/D/D’s and there was soo much text on the cards that the dad had to have a magnifier to read em… they were both great
That sounds like a cool dad.
@@endymallorn he was very cool, I played D/D/D in Zoo format & he was playing in TOSS(I think) but he knew the deck way better than I ever did. He also really supported his son… I wish he was my dad
Konami should give out magnifiers as promos lmao
that sounds so wholesome
This reminds me of teaching my mom Digimon recently, we used to play Pokemon competitively about 20 years ago but ofc her eyesight has gotten worse. She enjoyed the game, but suggested next time we play I let her wear the magnifying goggles I use for miniature painting 😂
*Does anybody else love these old pieces of lost Yu-Gi-Oh media? Even if they're cringey, at least they're good for a laugh.* 😅
Yeah
The return of Bradley
Would love to see the boys do a parody vid of this kinda stuff.
@@kromlok yes
True
I’m taking lessons from this DVD and winning my next regional 🏆
You going to become the next king of games after taking lessons from this dvd too
Probably would be useful seeing how the game is today. Lol
@@MaxAndersonn Thanks. Also, your last name is dope
Take it to the top of the moutain and be the best
@@oceanwavedvd Thanks
I don't even find these so cringey tbh, I would have loved to see that as a kid. It's a perfect mix of taking it seriously enough as a hobby but also not overacting like anime characters or something. These just seem like people who have a healthy attitude towards a hobby, with the kind of acting you would expect from kids at the start of the internet era
Yep! Honestly, they're really not too bad. I didn't show as much of the instructional sections in this video since they're pretty dense, but it's actually a very informative one compared to some others I've watched.
It's at least not as weird as that stupid live-action video made to hype up the Pokemon anime before it started airing in the US.
Playing Yugioh without acting like an anime character is a waste of time tbh
@@TeamAPS The only cringe part is the boys vs girls sub-plot. I am not aware of any school or locals, or regionals, or YCS or card shop that has ever discouraged, made fun of, or banned female players.
@@mortgageapprovals8933 Gotta remember this was the mid 2000s. Back then it was totally commonplace for teenage/preteen boys to think it was totally uncool to have kids or girls around. I should know, I was a teenage boy in the 2000s and having to take my baby brother with me to locals was like pulling teeth lol. It's a different story now that we're all adults of course.
Hannah: "I need to be better than all those boys"
Prof. Duel: "TAKE REVENGE ON THEM ALL, HANNAH. BURN THEIR HOMES TO THE GROUND AND MAKE MOUNDS OF THEIR SKULLS!"
Hannah: ".....wut?"
Prof. Duel: ".....wut?"
Chad would definitely be episode 1 Joey with a full monster deck.
Ah yes, the most trust worthy of ways into becoming a pro duelist! Mid 2000s video guides. Perfect.
15:08 the phrase “when the student is ready, the teacher will appear” is a quote from the mask of zoro movie!!
For some reason, this gives me X-Men vibes with this whole school and the mysterious chill teacher 😅😂
Could you imagine being at the Institute for Gifted Youngsters, and your mutant power is, “Really good at 2004 Yu-Gi-Oh”?
@@endymallorn "My codename is Greed. I can draw 2 cards anytime I want"
Cringe acting aside, they won me over when they explained chains and the "mst negate" stuff
I used to keep a sheet of paper folded up in my deck box and just tore pieces of it off for tokens back then lol
The supportive parent thing is nice. I remember that I was really into the game when it first came out, so much so that my mom often accused me of worshipping the game, I dunno maybe she misinterpreted overhearing me mentioning the god cards, but it did hurt. I've actually been buying extra boxes of new sets to keep for later, that way if I do have kids and they take an interest in the game, I can give them a more fleshed out card pool to play with. And of course if that simply doesn't happen, I can always resell or open them later.
When I was a kid, we would just use our FUSION deck cards and flip them upside down and use them as scapegoat tokens.
As cringy as these videos were, they actually did a really good job at explaining everything. I watched these recently for fun and even I learned a few things
Why do you find it cringe???
@@TheDeathmail if you can't tell what's corny or cringeworthy even when seeing acting like at the start of this video then there's no way am explanation will make it clear
@@TheDeathmail I personally think it's a little cringy with the acting. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean cringe in the sense that it's painful t watch. I actually find it quite enjoyable to see the characters they made up. It's more so the delivery and actions of a few of them. I really like the effort they went through though, and the third DVD in the series did a really good job imo
@@SquishiestSquidy I thought it was extremely funny. 😅
Fusions are purple and traps are pink, I'm with you on that.
So Wikipedia has Dan Green listed as Professor Duels Voice actor, which may be why he's not shown physically. Konami might not have looked at that happily.
Right I'm surprised he didn't catch it. It sounds so uncannily close to a Yugi Muto and Yami Yugi cross. Even similar mannerisms
That makes a lot more sense.
Its nice to see these videos explain mechanics pretty well. I remember the last video about their previous DVD, and that was good too.
"No shit, Bradley"
I was in stitches 😂
Oh man, my brother and I had a Yu-Gi-Oh lesson DVD, too. I think it was an official one from Konami, because it had the voice actors for Yugi and Joey (or people pretending to be them anyway) giving the lessons. The only thing I really remember from it (aside from the rules apparently haha), was the advice to shake your opponent's hand at the start of the duel. We thought it was funny to do that, for whatever reason, and would constantly reference it before our duels. Man, I wish I still had that DVD.
I'll be honest. The school of duel seems more legit than duel academy.
For the parent segment, we did a bit of speed duel for my birthday a few weeks back - I think my Mom is hooked, and might like the game more than I do (she roped in my Aunt + her boyfriend, and wants us all to cosplay as YGO characters)
There is a 3rd DVD called Master Duelist which sees Bradley and the gang learn how to play in Tournament Settings and the "Master Duelist Level" rules from Professor Duelist.
You took me back man I remember watching these. Thanks team APS for the nostalgia blast
I've been working in a sign shop for the last two years, and I 100% get where you're coming from when it comes to assets, Paul. Lmao I can't count the amount of times I've had to search for a good looking telephone or graduation cap or book or whatever else to replace the bad image that a customer has given me in order to make their sign look good. That quick play icon definitely looks crisp.
What i learned today is Paul's mom is the real mvp.
2:44 Professor Duel eats cards! That's how he's so knowledgeable. This is some deep lore right here.
I just love how "product of its era" this DVD is. Something like this could've ONLY come out when it did.
I love the school of duel dvd series. Still fun to watch.
Always enjoy seeing these reactions to old school unofficial Yugioh guides! And honestly aside from the wooden acting and the weird Charlie's Angels esque setup of this "Mr Duel" talking through a speaker, it's actually a pretty indepth and comprehensive dive into some of the more intricate mechanics of this era.
Retro Yugioh is always fun to see. It’s amazing seeing how simplistic the game was back in the day compared to now a days. It’s like an entirely different game. Also, the pot of greed mug is awesome.
They should have made a Yugioh guide on how to believe in the heart of the cards.
True. I could never figure it out.
Get a puzzle from ainchent Egypt and solve it and boom you now have the heart of the cards.
That's just the anime
Loved how it opened with the theme to the early mortal kombat movies. The perfect dueling jam.
I love how they’re taking characters from the previous videos to help future duelists
Holy shit i miss 2004!!!! The best year ever..
Yu-gi-oh was EPIC this year!
Pyramid of light movie came out. Halo 2 came out.
So many epic awesome films dropped like Troy , spider-man 2 , etc.
Truly a godly year i miss so much.
For real! Except I had to go to summer school that year and I also got left back in 2nd grade because I failed summer school. :P
I think they are mega advanced for what it is. Man they even explained chains…in 2004!!!!!
Man I love these. The official one that came out around this time that was basically just an audiobook of the rulebook essentially was a lot of fun too.
The last time you did one of these is how I found your channel and why I subbed! If you find any more of these, make more videos.
Idc if the overall idea of playing the game with friends and family is really helpful, I’m not going to bring my friends and family to some Guy’s office because the box told me to 😂
Love these reaction vids cause I've seen a few of these videos and it definitely hits the nostalgia bone
Lost media is my favorite!
Cringe aside, I would've loved to have had this DVD back in the day. It's surprisingly informative, and like you said it debunked a lot of the schoolyard bs interpretations of cards.
The quick play mechanic was really not that well know in 2004, especially at schools. I still remember that I had to explain a lot that I can activate a spell card in the opponent’s turn (sometimes without succes).
3:30 I know the beginning of a Shadow Game when I see one...
I didn't even know these types of DVD's existed back then. That's wild! Great reaction video btw.
Man, I remember now a specific guy I dueled against, he had a really ... uncommon opinion about what a side deck is for. So, whenever he needed a card to counter strategy or get rid of some pressure, he just drew or picked a card from his side deck, and we were like "dude, wtf are you doing?" Then he "explained" , that this is, what a side deck is for, that one have acess to those cards at any time. I barley felt so much despair and anger about a dude, but he really messed it up. It was so fkn wild.
Oooh! This was fun! I was honestly unsure what had come first..rituals or toons..it had been so long since both were released and I was a kid. Turns out they were both introduced in Spell Ruler AKA Magic Ruler. I do remember wanting the toons because of the anime but people hating them for all the restrictions and dependency on Toon World at first. When they were first out, I remember the ritual monsters actually being a bigger deal. They had their adveantages over polymerization because you only needed the ritual monster, the ritual spell and any high level moneter to get it out. This worked well in a beat-down deck where you could put in some high level monsters for the ritual summon as well as to be tribute summoned out afterward. It was a quick way to cheese-out strong tribute monsters in a single turn through the special summons more than anything. At the time, generic fusion and contact fusion was not established so you needed ploymerization and at least two or more specific materials. Most fusion mosnters were not super impressive either so ritual spamming had a bit of an advantage, shortly. Toons COULD do this but the cost and restrictions to balance them went way too far for that first gen. Relinquished was the cover art card released in that same set. It was more often used on field to turn the opponent's monster agaisnt them, however, do remember it used in ritual spam decks for a combo. It was one of the easiest to ritual summon with its low level, so you would dump the least useful monster in hand to get it out. You would then steal an opponent's monster (usually the last one they had) then use Relinquished to tribute into a stronger monster. This would get rid of your opponent's monster and without a destruction effect. It also often would allow a direct attack. Since you could steal a face down monster your opponent likely just had as defence, it would ensure your reliquished was not left on the field with vulnerable stats, you got a big tribute monster on the field and your opponent's weak defence monster was removed. The toon Blue-Eyes released in the same set, by comparison, required you to have played Toon world and paid 1000 LP as a result, have it stay on the field as T.B.E. would leave if it did, tribute two monsters ON THE FIELD for its special summon, wait a turn to attack and pay a further 500 LP each time it did. This was pretty insane..relinquished was a one turn Summoned Skull that could immediatly attack and non-destruction monster removal for your opponent in the same act. OR, it could be used to steal a Blue-Eyes for an even higher attack and use the monster as a meat shield giving it versititly in thebdeck. Toons, even at first; were slow, required too many resources and were very vulnerable all for the special summon and direct attack gimik. One major difference was field reliance for the special summon. Toons needed to tribute monsters on the field for their special summon to end with them being the high attack on the field. Rituals used monsters in hand to get directly to the field themselves. Most did not have that impressive of attack themeselves for their level but were free tributes then for higher vanilla monsters. You also could ritual summon twice in one turn then tribute for a Blue-Eyes. Without many low level toons, spamming onto the field was not as easy as this video made them sound..certainly less so than rituals..to answer your question, I would say fusions were the first, (they were a special summon from to field using monsters that didnt need to be on the field that you could then tribute for something better), followed by a tie of toons and rituals..but with the coviate of toons not actually being popular or very sucessful with this.
Yes I had this. A piece of nostalgia, its cool to have those old pieces of gold lol. My absolute favorite stuff though was Forbidden Memories for Playstation, Duelists of the Roses for Playstation 2 and the GBA game The Sacred Cards.
Oh Professor Duel ~ ... If only I studied more in Duel School. 😅
The opening to that Yu-Gi-Oh DVD kinda reminds me of the old Charlie's angels TV show I think from the 70s. Were Charlie would give the angels their mission through a speaker box.
Also, I kinda wish that we had gotten the original first japanese print of Toon World.
Its effect was: pay 1000 life points to activate Toon World and then pay another 500 each standby phase. If Toon World is destroyed, you gain life points equal to the life points paid for this cards effect.
Was hoping there was more these for yall to react to
This is the best video you guys have done in a long time. Mega Capital G meets Reacts video. Great stuff guys.
I think it would have been really funny if Professor Duel introduced the girl to floodgates when she was concerned about not being taken seriously.
I was kinda hoping you'd eventually revisit these! Despite being corny, I love these types of things so much.
Its the same actor that played Bradley in the first school of duel
I'like him, he's really poggy
The copyright safe mortal kombat music was the best
Editor was ahead of his time. Thanks for the cool video, would love to see more ❤
Nice to see these again
Strange professor aside, this guide is pretty amazing for it's time.
Yes it was pretty nice detailed ^_^
I developed a method of play testing my decks, when it came time to attack i “randomly” picked a card to destroy if there was two or more from the monster zones or trap/spell zones. I’d flip a coin three times. Since there are 5 spots, the first flip of the coin determined the 1st 3 from my left if it was heads, then the last 3 to my right, then out of those 3, i’d flip the coin again to choose the first 2 or last 2. For the final flip is to determine the furtherest most to my left or right.
Love love loved this video, more lost yugioh media videos pleasee!!!!
Hi i love your videos you helped me to come back in to yu gi oh
we need the final part of this next year. Or well, asap
I love these videos of these old duel tapes I wish we got to see more of it
Man this was so cool to see. I would have been so into these dvds as a kid
Ah I remember 2004, my Freshman and Sophomore years in high school when I was transitioning from a horrendous duelist to a decent one. Good times!
Just found you guys, and I love your content. For me, Yugioh was definitely the more mature version of Pokémon that I was wanting (Johto league made me fall off from the Pokémon anime). The card game mechanics seemed more advanced, and the monster designs definitely were more mature and not quite as cute. I still love Pokémon but Yugioh was awesome.
Very cool that this existed!
This represents a big role in the past actually!
Violet includes purple so it is correct to refer to Fusion Monsters as violet.
That intro song had no business going that hard.
14:11 Violet and purple are technically the same color. It's just different ways of calling it.
I had some "learn to play" yugioh tapes. Being before the internet, it was really fun to watch them as a kid. It was like watching a let's play today. I also didn't have anywhere to really play the game, so it was cool to see actual dueling.
I really hope you watch the Expert Duelist video. It doesn't have as much content as the other two, but it has it's fair share of interesting points, like mentioning the limited and banned list and deckbuilding tips from the 2000s, and some goofy/cringey stuff on the side.
Gonna miss your vids man 😭
I wouldn't expect it, but a low-pass filter could help manage the high frequency noise in the video.
Good content as always though
This probably inspired Yu-Gi-Oh GX lol
The term “chain” is weird. In magic we call it the “stack” because you make a stack.
that bumpin casio preset song at the beginning man.
Yoooooo Bradley's back
My wife actually found me a copy of this at a pawn shop for cheap some years ago, not knowing what it was but thinking I'd be interested in it since she knows how much I like the game. I was honestly surprised at how good and accurate the guide was at explaining the game mechanics and reflecting popular strategies of the time. Yeah, it's a tiny bit cringe to the acting, but there's also a certain level of charm to it too. Overall I kinda love the whole trilogy of videos this company put out, especially since the Duel Masters Guide only explained so much of the game.
I remember these DVDs, i always have a good laugh when i find them
You should try finding these people and see if they would do a interview, like over discord or zoom etc.
I think it would make for a great follow up.
Love the imperial order at the start. (Little did they know.)
This would so be something I watched as a kid if I knew they existed lmao
IDK if it's a good idea to talk about it in the comments, but I thought it was really cool that during the video (when you were talking about the "magic vs spell cards" thing), you said that you "didn't put it in". I almost didn't catch it, but logistically, that feels like a pretty tough thing to do.
If I were making this video, I wouldn't know what edits I would make until I'm actually at the editing program, but it speaks to your videomaking abilities if you're able to make calls like that "on set". It really makes it feel like your video has some pretty great production! Not that I can say those kinds of things as a nobody, but I just think it's cool.
The MK theme song at the beginning lmao
I love how the intro music was basically just a rip off of the Mortal Kombat film theme lol
A properly damn good guide though for the time. Surprised.
Suggestion for a video and duel. What about Triple Threat and Fatal Four Way duels?
I wonder if the last one will be about the gx area explaining archetypes
Aww, small little Paul backstory 😊
If I was a kid in the 2000's id watch this day and night trying to perfect everything they say while just looking and having fun.
Great video guys!
That intro song tho 😂😂😂😂😂 0:46
My family still has a yugioh training video (somewhere) that’s old enough to note that your deck can be *as big as you want* as well as the regular rules from around 2004? Ish idk the exact year
I am now scared of Professor Duel.
Pegasus and Marik have nothing on him.
As soon as those cards appeared from thin air it was already to late 💀
Anyone else thought that Mr Duel was gonna be like at the end "Now that you've finished the lessons, turn around ..." Then the person turns around and a wall shadow monster screams and lunges at the screen, fading to black?
Man loved this!
God, your wink wink made my day ahahah
"Professor, I was chilling out in the school yard."
0:48 crash bandicoot music.. nostalgic af lol
