It's good to know (and remember) that a generator is required for several medical situations, not only for CPAP machines but small refrigerators that hold medication, charging motorized wheel chairs? So many scenarios I hadn't thought about. Thank you for doing such a good job on covering a wider spectrum of "be prepared."

After doing some research, which included watching this video, I bought the Jackery Explorer 500 for my CPAP resmed airsense 11. I also bought the dc adapter. Running the 11 with heat and humidity overnight used 31%. Without the heat and the humidity, it only used 11%. This is a great setup, and it will allow me to go camping again. It's also nice not to have to worry about power outages.

I have two Jackery 1000 units and both my wife and I use CPAP equipment. We lost power overnight only once since buying these units. A single unit allowed us to sleep through the night and only use 60% of its capacity. Except for the small fan which ran periodically, it was completely silent. I keep both of them on utility power in a spare bedroom for just such situations.

Thank you for this helpful video I am hunting for a good camping battery. For all of you who travel/camp and cannot sleep without the cpap AND need the humidity (mouth breathers?), I just discovered an awesome solution: first of all I use a standard hose (not a heated hose) with a home-made fleece cover (you can also buy them), then I disabled my humidifier/water heater and placed a tap water wet washcloth in the humidifier chamber (there is no water floating in the chamber, just the wet washcloth folded up to fit) and there you have it!! It works super well and no more hunting for distilled water when travelling or at home for that matter (I actually only do it this way now). My scientist husband says the humidity in the air getting drawn in over the wet washcloth is practically distilled and because it’s not warmed, no minerals are dissolved in the process. I am hyper sensitive to smells and cannot tolerate the smell of regular tap water in my cpapa plus it’s disastrous to use with my cpap. I had to once while traveling (before I discovered this trick) and it coated the inside of my tube with minerals causing it to crackle after a few days. It was awful. This has changed my life (I have severe apnea). Hope it helps someone out there.

@ well I’m glad you responded but I hate to tell you that it turned out I was wrong. The tapwater was hurting my throat. I was coughing more and more. I had no idea what it was until my CPAP supplier said the tapwater wouldn’t necessarily hurt the machine (my fear), but it could hurt me and I put two and two together. I’m sure for a night or two it would be fine, but I will never again do it long-term. Since I stopped and use distilled water again it took about a week, but I’m completely done with the coughing and the sore throat and it wasn’t sickness. I know the difference. I was overseas for two months and had no distilled water. That’s how it started. Honestly, I don’t know if just the washcloth would have the same effect the last month and a half I was just putting in tapwater I had just boiled…maybe just the washcloth trick wouldn’t be the same. I’m not saying don’t do it but watch yourself if you start coughing and your throat feels increasingly raw!!

I've been using a $160 Uninterruptible Power Supply made by APC that I got from Amazon. The power only goes out 2-3 times a year and normally for less than an hour but sometimes 2-3 hours. So this device has been really good to me. The mask has an opening so that you can keep breathing with the power being out but it always wakes me up so this device has allowed me to sleep through a few power outages without any problems.

I have a $40 UPS that has worked well for me for a few years now... About 4 or 5 times a year, we lose power for a matter or seconds. Just enough to reset appliance clocks, and turn off every "smart" device in the house, including my CPAP. As ways to wake up go, it's only marginally better than hearing a window break in the middle of the night!

I wired 4 Duracell 12VDC batteries (18AH each) in parrallel. Each battery is $70. Bought the KFD thingy shown in the video and wired it in. Bought a heavy duty plastic, 20" Craftsman toolbox that fit all 4 batteries and my lightweight smart battery charger all together.
I get 72 amp hours versus 24 amp hours in the Jackery500. I already had the battery charger.
The whole thing cost me about $310 and should run the CPAP 3 times longer than the Jackery500. And the batteries are easily replaceable.
Of course I do NOT get 120VAC as I don't have an inverter.
I'm guessing my system is at least 3X heavier, but it is manageable to me. But you do need a higher quality toolbox, a cheap toolbox will not work. I use mine strictly for CPAP camping, ice fishing, etc. I have a generator but got sick of running it through the night just for the cpap.
I'm not bashing the Jackery at all - I think the Jackery is GREAT!! It's just that I get more days worth of CPAP usage, in about the same size package, at less cost. Having said that, maybe mine is overkill, maybe I don't need all these extra days.

Runtimes with my CPAP heater and humidifier enabled varies SIGNIFICANTLY due to different treatment needs from night-to-night and ambient temperature. However, I consistently get 2-3 nights with these features enabled when using my Jackery 500 without charging. Makes weekend camping trips a lot more comfortable. However, I use solar panels / car 12V to keep the Jackery topped up during the day using pass-through charging, and that keeps my CPAP (with heater/humidifier), electric cooler, phone, etc. running indefinitely.

A about 10 years ago we did a major renovation. We kept having to kill power to move something and usually needed something from the garage when doing it. I would get to the garage but the door would not open as we turned off the power. I put a small solar system on the garage, 150w solar panel, 30 amp controller, three deep cycle batteries and a 3000 watt inverter. It has run the garage door for years now. I also use it to power my rechargeable drills and stuff. It's great during power outages. Access to the garage is easier. My wife points out that I can go thru the man door, but where's the fun in that. I can run my CPAP for a few nights for sure. Another nice bonus is that we can run the router and WIFI from it. Have a generator if we have long outage but it keeps the WIFI running when you would not want to run the generator.

Having a CPAP since 2006, I’ve gone through a few machines. They always break on the worst night when you really need a good night of sleep and then it takes several days for a replacement. Have a backup CPAP by replacing an old one while it still works but within your insurance window -or- get a travel cpap that doubles as a backup and something easier to travel. It is a buzzkill to pack up your proper CPAP before an early flight. Have your car fully packed by having a dedicated CPAP for travel. I use the HDM Z2 after having about 5 years of service from an HDM Z1.
I’ve also gone on two trips and either forgot a part to my cpap or had something break in the field. Big cities usually have durable medical supply shops.

I use a CPAP and have for years. They gave me the heated tube with my last CPAP and suggested I try it since I had trouble with dry sinuses. I tried it and could not handle the heated air & water even at lower temperatures. I learned the best thing for me was to just use a standard non-heated hose and just put distilled water in the tank. To help keep my nostrils from drying out I used Vaseline inside my nose for decades. I also use a chin strap to keep mouth shut.
Forward to October of 2023; I had an unexpected nosebleed early in the month (hadn't had one for years). I tried everything to stop it and went to Urgent care and they put in a plug which stopped the bleeding. (more to the story but I won't bore you with the details other than Blood pressure dropped to 78 over 50 due to loss of blood)
Went to an Ear, Nose, Throat(ENT) specialist the next day and he cauterized the vessels. NOW to the point; the ENT told me that Vaseline drys out the nose tissue and the best thing to use is coconut oil (comes as a solid not a liquid). Takes some learning to scrape a little out of the jar and get it into you nostril before it starts melting.
Caution: if you use water in your CPAP system, be sure to rinse your tank weekly, air dry it and every couple three weeks wash it and your hose with a drop of liquid dish soap. This will keep mold and mildew from growing in the system. DO NOT use bleach even diluted in a gallon of water as this can damage your air passages and lungs. Now to continue the search for a new power supply for both our CPAPs.

    • @donnelson6333
      @donnelson6333 3 месяца назад

I've also suffered a few nose bleeds due to dried out sinuses and have had three separate cauterizations.
Because I suffered two of the nosebleeds during flights across the country, my ENT doc recommended that I use a saline gel called "Ayr," and it has worked wonders!!!
Simply squeeze a little on a Q-tip and gently swab your sinus passages. For long haul, international flights, I reapply Ayr about every 4-6 hours, and have had no further problems.
      Good luck!!

I do have a question that is not necessarily prepper related though. You mentioned you used it for 12 days without the humidifier. For preparedness reasons, I really like this idea. That being said, if I do turn them off, it dries out my nose and mouth so much that it’s almost painful and I sleep about as much as I do without using the machine, which is basically zero. Do you (or anyone else) experience this, and how do you get over it? Thanks again for the video!

It will take over automatically when the power is out for a few hours and you don't have to wake up. It will also protects your expensive CPAP from power spikes or brownouts. You can also plug in other devices like your phone, alarm, or night stand light.

I need to buy a power bank to power a nebulizer. I have enough albuterol to last 6 months although it may use some of its effectiveness by the end of 6 months I think it will be fine.

I use a jackery also (the 240, because it very expensive in israel due to the war, today its about 2000 NIS which is about 540 USD). i use the AC because my CPAP machine dont have DC inlet, but I hgave the solar pannel just in case, besides, there are no blackouts in Israel, ever... never got to use it, only for camping. what I am more intreseted is what do you do with the fridges and freezers in your house. I have two fridges and one freezers and I dont know what I would do in case of a blackout...

Howdy. Great video. I have owned a Baldr 330 for 3 years as an emergency home backup. Its been plugged into home AC for the entire time. I've never had to use it. I decided last week to test it (like a fire drill) and was disappointed to watch the LCD battery level indicator drop 1 percent per minute. It seems the battery is no good. I'm wondering if I caused that by leaving it plugged in all the time or if its normal for these batteries to die after a few years? Thanks for any input or help!
Also - How is the Jackery customer service? I can't get anything from Baldr at all!

Ah, I also got the AirSense 10 recently. Not that I necessarily die if I'm not using it, but yeah my power station could power that. It's interesting to hear that there's a DC adapter for that, although a bit expensive. The need for several days outages sounds rather marginal.
