I saw 300 shows & for my money the band never had a sound as powerful as '91. People don't realize now how much of "an event" it was for the Dead playing Deer Creek back then. After '89 Deer Creek got a reputation & it became the hardest venue to get tickets for each year, from '90 through the last yr '95. Thankfully I grew up in Indiana so tix were never a problem, I saw every Dead show at Deer Creek from '89-'95. Everyone wanted to get in & experience "a Deer Creek show" bcuz of '89 but especially '90 when both nights were "Dick's Picks" worthy. Deer Creek became the east coast Shoreline basically. The sound they had in '91 was _so thick_ & rich... the power they had was incredible & almost uncontrollable when they all got goin'

Lil did anyone the new age of the marijuana genetics were born at this show. Dude named chemdog purchased a oz of high quality weed for $500 in lot. Phones numbers were exchanged he was sent 2 more zips in the mail months later 1 zip had 13 seeds. He grew them out and that's were chemdog and sour diesel come from. This day changed marijuana industry for ever. Its definitely historic, most of the best high end strains come from those seeds. History was made and chemdog and sour diesel were born. O ya the the dead f'n rock!

We had flavors of sour diesel circa 90-91 SC Illinois 2.75 hours west of Deer Creek but the slang was Fayette Co Fogweed. The college kids in Carbondale went nuts for it. We would trade lb for lb for shrooms. The fuzz in St Elmo had zero clue what shrooms were, their redneck horizons were focused on weed yet ignorant of the meth havoc that focus created. The Times of a Guerrilla Grower in the 90s Midwest, were not exactly the easiest but wouldn't that make a great movie title?

Summer and fall 91 are actually chock full of gems. 6/9, 6/16-17, 9/14. I actually listened to the 92 spring tour recently to see if it carried over as it was the last tour that bruce was almost full time (all but nassau) and there are lots of highlights there too. Last consistently great era imho. Hornsby added a special quality and sound and jerry loved playing with him.

Even though Brent checked out, the band continued the amazing run they'd been on from '87 well into '93. That 1st Fall tour('90) w/Vince was a little rough, mainly the 1st 2 cities(Clev & Philly), until Bruce joined em in MSG before the European tour. After the European tour, starting in Dec '90 through Spring '93 they were so on fire... it's almost hard to pick a bad show in that stretch

This show is a good example of when Bruce and Vince sounded great together. Sometimes the dueling-keys sound they created is a little overwhelming for me, but during Jack Straw and TLEO, it comes together nicely. That beautiful blast of grand piano and synth tones that hits your face and pushes you away from your speaker (~):-)

    • @sergiobonilla6939
      @sergiobonilla6939 5 лет назад +4

Agreed. These are both great, crackler shows... the frequent intense crowdedness (?) of the two keys and Garcia's leads is more overwhelming on the Scarlet-Fire of 6-7-91. As you mention, it comes together nicely for JS, TLEO and the China Rider of set II!

I saw shows here and there from '85 - '95 and this was probably the last time I saw them truly shine (with the possible exception of the Scarlet>Fire at Cleveland in Sept. '91). There were nice moments after this, but it felt like they never quite had it together like they did these 2 nights.

I was 11 - June 6th and 7th we went to the Dead shows at Deer Creek Music Center in Indiana and sold crystals outside in the parking lot then two days later followed them to Buckeye Lake Music Center in Ohio. Buckeye was the perfect Dead venue because there was a giant beautiful lake and wood nearby. We found the best spot to sell our crystals in the middle of shakedown street and made a killing that show. There was a fun waterslide and great picnicking and camping by the lake.

Haven’t been to Deer Creek since ’94. They say it’s since been industrialized, surrounded by shopping centers and parking lots, etc. If that’s the case I don’t want to go back. Rather preserve the memories of open skies and cornfield surroundings. Great venue, second only to Alpine for this Midwestern fan.

Drums was Mickey Heart, and Bill the two drummers just going off like a solo it gave the rest of the band their break time
Space was the rest of the band coming back in
They all played their own groove like acid test to see where it would go
I’ve had the entire stadium take flight during drums and space before!
As far as movies go they did the music for an old series called The Twilight Zone theme song, which is real fitting for them👍

My god, sound guy has Vince way to high in the mix on china cat--IKYR, maybe the rest of the set too it just happens to the first thing I listen too. Also the voice/effect the sound guy picked for Vince's midi keyboard (and yes, apparently he picked the sound Vince's keyboard produced) is jarring and inappropriate for the song and to make it worse Vince is just going to town. Vince was hired over better qualified musicians mostly due to his voice. Then they put the Hammond b3 in storage with the fender Rhodes and only allowed him to use midi keyboards. Like mentioned they even robbed him of the agency to choose what "instrument" his keyboard would impersonate. And to top it all off they turned his dials to eleven to make sure everyone could hear things like a fake horn section for Estimated Prophet and other atrocities and crimes against dead songs. Vince takes a lot of the heat but it's mostly undeserved as it was ultimately the band making these questionable decisions. I get that it's a lot easier to lug around a small electric keyboard versus organs and electric pianos but they were pulling in so much cash on those late tours it should not of factored in to the decision, especially considering they added a grand piano for Bruce. My theory, which has been semi confirmed through interviews I have read from Bruce, is that very early on they realized they made a mistake hiring Vince but felt bad firing him, especially since he was in financial fire straits at the time. So they brought on Bruce hoping he struck around and became a permanent member, which I think he considered but ultimately couldn't stay and be a party to Jerry's decline.

Missed just one show at Deer Creek. The Dead seemed to like to play there. They were always so good, and it was like the most beautiful place on Earth those summer evenings.

    I'll show you
    Snow and Rain"

The year i turned my mom down for wanting to take me to a Dead show. I was really into heavy metal. I have a good love for the dead now.

Cool Video, the beginning footage I believe was either from or used in a Indiana public television special on Deer Creek. Only Vince Welnick was interviewed ... I was at every Deer Creek run except 89 & 92 - China Cat is the highlight... it was US Blues blotter on that tour
