  • Today I'll talk about the problem and more importantly a means of fixing it! TP-Link routers may be a SpaceX Starlink security risk. A recent bipartisan letter sent to Commerce Department calls for an investigation of the cybersecurity risks posed by Wi-Fi routers from Chinese company TP-Link Technologies. As we saw with the recent Trump / Elon chat on X, hackers wheeled great power by controlling tens of thousands of zombie IoT devices, like routers, to launch a massive DDOS (Distributed Denial Of Service) attacks or even worse. Your router could be one of this compromised zombie devices that can not only aid in such attacks but also make your internet connection SLOW & UNRELIABLE.

There’re many more routers other than TP-link that are made in China. It became very hard for us to find devices that are not made in China. That’s very sad. Thanks for the content.

Segregation of the network would be a great video to do. Especially since IoT devices are notorious for these kind of attacks and spyware. Best circumstance would be the home network then a guest one. Then finally a separate one for all the IoT devices a person uses at home. This way friends can use WiFi while with you and neither they or you are exposed to potential attacks.

Build your own Router with a Old PC Box - PFsense or opensense for example.. uses a bit more Power but can be upgraded with better NIC's etc over time. Add your own Access Points as needed for your use case.
    Its very Easy actually.
And far better in mostly every way.
This is what you do with your Old tower PC that you want to toss out.

    • @Stephen-yd7ce
      @Stephen-yd7ce 23 дня назад +1

100% agree, or just buy a box from them 'pfSense+'. Folks that are capable should just get away from wireless routers and start using firewalls + AP's. pfSense has models from $190 up or you can build your own as pointed out above. If you can configure WRT you can setup this firewall.

This is so very interesting, I could watch it 2 or 3 times/ Even though some of the stuff I don't even use. Your describing your home network, helps me to see a reality of a network and not just one I might read about, If that makes sense. The 3 letter abbreviations throughout technology (which most reading material just expects you to know), you spelled out and my jaw dropped. I had to rewind. And I was like OMG did he just told what that stood for! Watching this video was almost like seeing inside the room of technicians working in Intel or Cisco. So close but I'd love to see more!

Will you do a video on Open WRT? I am new (60+ yrs old) but a newbie. Would like to see how to do this for the router i have using with starLink. I go to the admin page all i get is your using starLink and it is unsecure, and no options to correct it. I will be using tplink router in about a week or so but would like to make sure it is secure.... Really like your channel.

Some manufacturers (Cisco for example) don't offer firmware upgrades without a service contract. And when device updates are not available, the security bugs remain. And they blame the customer for not patching, of course.
OpenWRT is great, definitely worth doing a video for first-timers. I also like Mikrotik, since they constantly update (and commit to 5 years beyond last sale).

I have a pile of Cisco gear sitting in storage. 10 802.11n APs, a 16 port PoE 1Gbps switch, and a couple of IP phones, all given to me when a friend's dad retired from his "itinerant sysadmin" business. I wasn't about to pay the small fortune ($100?) Cisco wanted for a short term support contract to get all that firmware updated, so it still sits in storage, nearly 10 years later. Oh yeah, the PDF manuals were behind that paywall, as well...

I run a TP-Link Deco mesh but make sure I keep them up -to - date. I segment my network into machines, IoT isolation, and a guest network having been in It for years. I used to reflash my older Linksys router with OpenWRT images until I needed a mesh system.

I'd be more open to trying to install open-wrt if I didn't also have a range extender. Thinking it might be less hassle to just use the Starlink as a router and order a second one to use as an extender. If only the things weren't so expensive.

There isn't a lot that can be done to prevent a DDOS ..... Once it starts there may be a way with routers and firewalls to stop or block the attack once it starts.
But UNTIL it starts there isn't a ton of preventative work that can be done.

You should absolutely do a video on advanced home network setup, along with both a "local" NAS, as well as a viable dropbox alternative that would be FULLY compatible with say for instance Linux Mint. Since Win 11 is not gonna run on much if any of my existing hardware be it desktop or laptop. And I have a relatively large dropbox that I can't easily access from a laptop on Linux Mint. More details of that issue available on request, LoL
    Thanks

Cell phones, and any technology related to communication and IT infrastructure should not be made in China or any other foreign countries...
All computer chips intended for US consumption should also not be made on any other countries...
When I worked in the IT Infrastructure industry I couldn't understand how IBM could sell it's PC division to China (Lenovo), Motorola is another one, there are way too many to list in a YouYube post.

I’ve been nervous about this subject. I have a Peplink router and I set the firewall rules to no/no. And then I individually opened up port and protocols for all my devices. One at a time. For the most part 443 get it done for the bulk of your traffic. And then for individual devices and services you just need to be aware and open up only what’s required to get the functionality you need. What a mess this is for most people, however.

  • @_Dutchman24_
    @_Dutchman24_ 23 дня назад +1

Hi Joe, I'm also wondering if, in some cases, the TR-069 protocol could be considered a "backdoor." Often, this protocol is activated by default when the router is supplied by the ISP, allowing them to manage firmware configurations (and who knows what else!). However, it is also possible that some brands hardcode TR-069 access into their routers, potentially giving them unlimited access to the devices? Another Chinaland brand, ZTE, has already been identified with this vulnerability. So for some users, just in case OpenWrt isn’t an option on their router, it might be worth checking if you can turn off this protocol - despite knowing if it really can be turned off.

I use mainly TP-Link products. My wireless router did a firmware update yesterday, my router is a TP-Link WiFi 7 BE9300 Archer BE550 Tri-band. I run a separate network for my IoT devices that works great and keeps me safe. Good vid. There is a caveat with Open source software. What you say is true, but its' security and quality is totally dependant on the size, capability and passion of the OSS community for the specific project. I think with log4j, for example, which was widely used had maybe 10 people who had been pushing changes to it - why? Because logging isn't so sexy.

I have a Tp-link mesh setup. I replaced my Google wifi mesh because I have 1.5 Gb internet and Tp-link was the only cost effective mesh system where the hubs had multiple 2.5 Gb ports. All the others would have 1 2.5 Gb port and 1 or more 1 Gb ports. With the old system I could only use 1 Gb of my available 1.5 Gb.

@@SHANNON-AZ It's still not a "Starlink Security Risk". It's exactly the same as if you used dsl/cable/fiber/cellular/other satellite for your internet service provider. Really, the fact that most Starlink customers are behind CGNAT adds an additional layer of security (obscurity) since those customer's insecure routers are not publicly accessible to poking and exploitation. For a customer's router behind CGNAT to get popped, it needs to come from a compromised box inside their network.

Installing open software on your router will help, but not as much as shutting down your IoT (lightbulbs, switches, toaster, laptops).
Have you asked why is starlink working with both Russians and Ukrainians on Ukrainian soil, and both Ukrainians and Russians on Russian soil, and not to mention the North Koreans and Chinese and Vietnamese and each group doesn't hack each other's TP-link routers through Starlink?
Because Russian and Ukrainian forces can be on the he same satellite, on the same city block and not "see" each other digitally.😂
Turn off your IoT, your mesh networks, and random Bluetooth because it's those devices that get compromised before your router. Then they attack your router. They even can attack your streaming service device on 2.4 GHz wavelength😂
Partition your devices from each other, much as the professionals from Starlink or every internet provider does, because the threat is inside your firewall and not outside.😂😂

    • @jcristina

Thanks Don. The frequency of updates to OpenWRT is a major benefit and the fact that it can be vetted by the entire community is too. The reason Linux is more secure than Microsoft Windows is simply because Windows is a POS since Vista days. 95 was not bad NT for business also. After 98 it became a BOG ball or bloated crap, worse with every iteration. Now it’s turned into a greater spyware risk than a Chinese router. IMHO

You're definitely one of the "knows just enough to be dangerous" guys.
      Linux packages are updated frequently.
Router manufacturers are lazy and slow in bundling the updates into a firmware update for their devices...or just don't do it at all.
By your logic - yeah my vulnerable Linux OS directly connected to the internet without a firewall (it IS the firewall) can't be more of a liability than Windows behind a firewall and NAT 🤦🏻

TP Link is not allowed to be attached to any Federal Government network. Elon needs to add a line of secure switches, routers, & Access Points. Elon is the only one that manufactures all his hardware in the US or Israel. Also flashing the firmware to WRT is the software. TP Link has snooping built into the hardware itself (hard coded)...so putting WRT in place does not stop that vulnerability.

TLDW: TP-Link (or any) router (Cisco, Netgear, etc) has vulnerabilities over time… TP-Link made in China so politicians want to ban it (like Hauwei). Suggests running Open-WRT OS on router instead to avoid TP-Link OS vulnerabilities… (though also need to keep up to date to avoid Open-WRT vulnerabilities). No relation to Starlink (per title), except to “keep software up to date” to avoid known vulnerabilities.
