Tommy!!! I basically lived at the Tower in Shibuya back in 2002. I was in Tokyo for three months and I was obsessed with Tower and the HMV mega store also in Shibuya. That Tower is where I discovered the Libertines debut album. I met a few likeminded locals who came back to my hotel(The Toku Excel) for some tunes and cuddles. Nothing cuter than kawaii girls into British music…;) My fave theme of the 80s is a tie… Square Pegs by The Waitresses Fast Times by Danny Elfman
Thundercats (1985-1989) - "Thundercats - Ho!!!!" Transformers (1984-1987) - "autobots rage their battle to destroy the evil forces of the decepticons!" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987-1996) - "Heroes in a Half Shell" GI Joe (1983-1986) - "he never gives up he stays till the fights won" Inspector Gadget (1983-1985)
This episode was taped before a live studio audience. What, no Small Wonder? Ha! Ok, seriously, no Ducktales? Not even from Tommy?! DUDE! ;) Another good one is Amen. The opening sequence with Sherman Hemsley parking his car and walking (strutting) into the church makes it even better. Not sure if the Jeffersons theme was mentioned in the 1970s video. I'm usually not one for TV show themes, actually, but if I were to choose a no. 1 fav of ALL TIME, it'd actually be the Cheers one. Sorry, Crystal. Ha. I understand the singer's voice can be too breathy. Even caught me off guard when I used to hear it way back when. But damn, that melody is gorgeous and the lyrics are spot-on right along with it. Air Wolf. I remember the NES video game. My father got it. Not sure why. MAYBE he liked the show? I'm really not sure. The It's Garry Shandling's Show theme was meant to be the anti-TV show theme, really. Like the show itself was meant to be the anti-sitcom, or just poking fun at the whole concept of it. Never saw any of Garry's shows, sadly. Ah, the Charles In Charge theme. What led to George Harrison being stabbed at his own home. (Look up the Family Guy clip) I did like the Bobby McFerrin version of the Cosby Show theme. And I always thought that pseudo-ballet opening was..... odd. My mother used to watch EastEnders, so yes, I'm very familiar with the theme. Ha. I love Married With Children. I can understand a song that's already been established not really being qualified as a great TV show theme. Never watched Full House. That show just reeks of stinky cheese to me. Ha. Did I just see someone impersonate Bruce Springsteen in a Super Golden Crisp cereal commercial? Wow... I think the success of All In The Family with their ways of dealing with serious topics is what led to shows like Different Strokes doing those "very special episodes". All of a sudden, thanks to the huge success of All In The Family, COMEDY shows decided not to be funny sometimes or most of the time, and I think the sitcom got ruined because of it, actually. I mean, I like All In The Family. The funny episodes were indeed VERY funny, but then you had those serious ones, and, yeah. They had dealt with serious topics in funny ways early in the series, but then they just went overboard with it at times later on, I think. I mean, if I sit down to watch a sitcom, I wanna laugh. Not cry or be put in suspense or anything like that. Just my opinion anyway. Ha.
@@ErnestIII83 Hey my musical brother from another mother. I agree with DuckTales (that is going to be on my 80s cartoon theme songs when they get into it which was sung by one of the members of The Jets...they mentioned it on TV One's Unsung). And also, yes you did see someone doing the Bruce Springsteen impression on the Super Golden Crisp. That was his long distance cousin Tom Springsteen doing that LOL
@@UniversalBlackRocker Oh yeah, I think they did say something about doing cartoons separate from the other shows. My mistake. Ha. Oh, yeah, forgot about ol' Tom. ;)
Paul the theme song that you sang but couldn't identify @19:00 is from the show Silver Spoons with a young Rick Schroder and Alfonso Ribeiro. I watched that show and like that theme song. 😃
I can't believe nobody had 60 Minutes on a list? Or did I miss it? Love Sidney! You guys are diggin deep through the archives! Tommy didn't like The Cosby Show? That was huge at the time. 1985 there wasn't a bigger show. Maybe Dallas or 60 Minutes, but not for kids. Diffrent Strokes was definitely too young a theme for Crystal. Those episodes scared the shit out of us kids. The Maytag man with the bike shop episode was one of the creepiest. That one and then with the Gooch.
Tommy did not let me down , love The Greatest American Hero, I'll stick a list up later, but I am UK so might have some if ours in there. Crystal thanks for TGAH as well.
@@AsItShouldBePodcast ok guys here we go and its not just UK, we have Japanese, French and all sorts here. I think you guys will particular appreciate one of these. Robin Of Sherwood (UK/Ireland represents by Clannad) 3. Miami Vice 2. A mixture of programmes that were age appropriate and ones I sneakily stayed up to watch. ruclips.net/p/PLELhBlpq0XdQP6JrcEFF_Ih3-2p3z6nzC
Well awwright...hello my favorite musical family. I'm very happy today that I have a list of my favorite TV theme songs of the decade I was totally around since I was born...the 80s. So I have 5 honorable mentions, my top 10 and two worst TV theme songs. So let me set my DeLorean to 1985 and get started with my lith. Honorable Mentions: Murder, She Wrote Perfect Strangers In The Heat Of The Night Matlock Kids Incorporated My Top 10: 10. The Golden Girls 9. Hunter 8. Magnum P.I. 7. Gimme A Break 6. Reading Rainbow 5. Night Court 4. 227 3. Knight Rider 2. A Different World And my number one TV theme song from the 80s goes to: 1. Miami Vice (love that show since it first came out in 1984... didn't care about the last two seasons though but the first three, amazing show with amazing music from The Who and The Stones to Phil Collins and Tina Turner). My Worst 80s TV Theme Songs: Small Wonder (never seen the show but the theme is boring) And the worst 80s TV Theme Song goes to: The New Monkees (yeah, I didn't like the show and didn't like the theme either). So that's my list and now I gotta get ready to set up my list of 90s TV theme songs for next week.
Another theme song that should've been my honorable mention list: Top Of The Pops where they used Phil Lynott's Yellow Pearl song. To the Thin Lizzy fans, it's the song that Phil and Midge Ure of Ultravox did together and became a UK hit and somewhat of a MTV hit here in the States that became the theme of TOTP in the 80s
My top 10. There's a couple hints to my age at the time, lol. 1. Cheers (1982-1993) 2. Reading Rainbow (1983-2006) 3. Jeopardy! (1984-present) 4. Facts of Life (1979-1988) 5. Mr. Belvedere (1985-1990) 6. Night Court (1984-1992) 7. Taxi (1978-1983) 8. Dallas (1978-1991) 9. Perfect Strangers (1986-1993) 10. Golden Girls (1985-1992) Honorable mentions - Married with Children, Zoobilee Zoo, The A-Team I, too, have a conundrum about songs that existed before the show, but the first time I heard these themes were as themes.
The MTM shows are just head and shoulders above the rest across the board. The themes, the production, the set designs, the writing… Shows like Newhart, St Elsewhere, and Hill Street Blues set the standard in the 80s the same way that Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, and WKRP did in the 70s. One show I should’ve mentioned last week but can technically list for this week was Lou Grant. The first season opening (theme and visuals) was just about perfect. Love, love, love the MTM shows. On the other hand, I hated the shallow, cheesy productions of shows like Different Strokes and Facts of Life. I did watch Facts of Life from time to time and thought it was an okay show (but I never liked Different Strokes for pretty much the same reasons Crystal mentioned-I wasn’t the most culturally sensitive guy on the block back then, but I picked up on the white savior thing and didn’t care for it AT ALL), but it just seemed cheap compared to something like Newhart. Almost like comparing a struggling community theater to a Broadway show.
Well, as you know, these lists are strictly for the themes. Our actual show lists would be notably different. But yes, the MTM stuff was always the best!
I agree with Tommy on The Cosby Show opening. It wasn't really the music for me, although I don't find it that interesting but watching Bill Cosby make stupid faces throughout the sequence of the opening turned me off from it and made me hate everything about the theme. Glad I wasn't the only one although felt in the minority when it came to that show.

Square Pegs by The Waitresses
Fast Times by Danny Elfman
Another great show, if I wasn't lazy I'd look up how many themes in the 3 shows so far were written by Mike Post or recorded by The Wrecking Crew.
Thundercats (1985-1989) - "Thundercats - Ho!!!!"
Transformers (1984-1987) - "autobots rage their battle to destroy the evil forces of the decepticons!"
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987-1996) - "Heroes in a Half Shell"
GI Joe (1983-1986) - "he never gives up he stays till the fights won"
Inspector Gadget (1983-1985)
My number one by a mile: Pee-Wee's Playhouse theme
Ooh... Pee-Wee's Playhouse!! Another one that I didn't put on my list. Shout out to Cyndi Lauper for doing the theme song
I’m totally embarrassed now!
