I have been enjoying your videos, but something about this one really speaks to me. The music, the editing, the pacing - this comes across as a small independent film. This is art. There is still deep snow here in Upstate NY, but you and others have inspired me to do some exploring when the weather improves. My daily driver is just a minivan, but your videos give me the desire to take some baby steps and start some adventures of my own. Thank you for sharing your passion.
Wow you're videos inspired me to go buy a Subaru and that's what I did yesterday. I now own a 04 Subaru outback wagon. Can't wait to take it out on the trails. Great video.
I had 2 outbacks both blew their head gaskets at like 130k miles but it's a pretty easy fix as far as engines go. I did both of mine myself and they ran fine . Only spent like 500 in parts to get the heads re down and then the gasket kit and timing belt to throw it all back together myself. Then they ran on strong . The AWD was pretty good . I have a crv now but miss my outback for sure .
You had me hooked with the hilarious start to this one🤣🤣 It’s always so nice to see your kids join you on one of your adventures. Another great video👏🏻👏🏻 Adventure on🚙⛰🍻
Coast range, now we're talking! I run around in the Clatsop and Tillamook county neck of the Coast range most of the time. I love it out there. I makes my heart happy to see y'all out among the Doug fir, maple and red alder!
Incredible scenery! I hope to make it over to Oregon again this summer to do some more exploring. I was there for a few weeks last summer and camped around Sisters and Klamath Falls, and then drove the coast from the Columbia almost the whole way south. Obviously I missed a lot though! Great music too!
I've followed both you and silver rd1 for years. Great to see y'all riding together! You're lucky to live in such an amazing place. Your videos make me miss the PNW. Keep up the great work!
I would go with Type BO! lol I enjoyed that lil sendy action at 2:58. Looks like an awesome trip! Glad you guys still went on a trail despite the original organizers being unable to make it. Awesome how theres still lil tidbits of snow up there. The fall colors on the trees up there are beautiful! Seriously cannot wait till we have out outback more built up and have the time and money to make a good long trip up there in the PNW. The more I watch your videos the harder I wanna work to get us there! Loved the scenery man the hovering clouds at 13:10... AMAZING! what an awesome adventure! Thank you for sharing and posting up the video!
Does the 3rd gen red CR-V have a channel? I also have one and am curious about their mods. Recently added 1 inch HRG spacers to the back of mine and love the added height.
No channel but you can take a look at his Instagram: instagram.com/mountain_rigs_adventures/ That CRV was recently totaled unfortunately, but if you dig down through his Instagram you'll be able to see the progression from stock.
This is funny cuz I have a 19 Cherokee trailhawk and my driving personality lines up with type bo as well. Maybe even more so lol. Interesting coincidence. Also i love how much you and your daughter show your ducks pride. I'm not from Oregon but I've been to a few ducks games including one at autzen and have been a fan for 20 years
I was on a trail run once when the trail bosses bailed about half way through! I had to lead the group the rest of the way through the run. Luckily I had known the route they had planned. Water hides bad stuff real well. I usually error to avoiding the water all together if I can for just such issues. Thanks for the entertainment on a rainy afternoon. George.
SW Idaho Overlanding Indeed...when I don’t have a car in front of me showing the hazards, you’ll find me out there poking with a stick. Mystery mud holes scare me. 😄 And Matt has only reinforced that fear, heh. Thanks for watching!
I’ve been singing Ruth’s “guy who backs out at the last minute” song in my head all day 😂 Sorry I couldn’t make the prairie peak trip. The footage you caught of us out in lowpass was epic though, especially that vista point! Can’t wait for the next adventure! 🤙🏼 Haha that last bit with the walkie chatter is hilarious! “Too late...” 😆
silver_rd1 Haha, I originally did put the actual song with Ruth singing in the intro here but just couldn’t quite get it all to flow right and pulled it back out. But I knew some people would at least recognize the quote. 😄
Another great video. Looks like that CRV took quite a hit on that one obstacle. Too bad he didn't have skid plates. Might have saved him. Anyway, looked like a fun adventure. Can't wait for the next one.
Ooooooh Yeeeeeaaaaaahhhhh! What an excellent episode! I’m really digging the segment about offroading Pysoftroading 🤣. With my CVT Subaru I had to be type Bo because I feared getting stuck, in the Passport I’m drive like type XOB now, because I feel that I no longer have to use momentum to get over obstacles, and as you can see from the later part in your video, using too much momentum can be really dangerous! 😭. Great video and great friends for letting you use that footage. It’s so helpful for other people to see (that are getting into overlanding/SoftRoading/car camping).
Weekend Travelling Oh good, you can see the difference? I wasn’t sure, but it does seem cleaner to me. It still looks mushy in places, but some of that is certainly down to the GoPro in low light, it doesn’t yield a very crisp image. Ultimately it wasn’t particularly burdensome to process in this way. I’ll keep doing it - thanks for the tip!
Well I’m a Jeep guy myself however I like that y’all air down take time to have fun & adventure Plus I am an Oregon boy myself from Dallas in Polk county I miss it I’m stuck in Phoenix 👎☹️👎it sux here
I've seen videos of some incredibly beautiful scenery and amazing trails in Arizona...the Sedona area looks stunning. I have to admit I don't know how near or far any of that is from Phoenix though. :-) And clearly a different kind of beauty from our lush rainforests and snowy mountain peaks here in the PNW. Thanks for watching!
Great adventure folks! Looks like the maroon crv may be a 3rd gen? I am looking for reliable information pertaining to lifting mine , like when do you have do much lift adding stress to the cv shafts/joints and do I get more flex removing the front sway bar links? Etc. any help?
Yes I believe it's a 3rd gen, but I know nothing about CRVs specifically. Those things are true of Subarus...if you lift a Subaru too much, it can stress the CV joints (that's why most Subarus are only lifted 2" - lifting more requires a lot of additional work to protect the axles, brake lines, etc). And disconnecting sway bars on a Subaru definitely improves flex...in fact I completely deleted the rear sway bar on my Forester. I imagine these things are generally universal to all independent-suspension AWD cars, but I don't have personal knowledge about CRVs specifically. I would look online for a CRV forum. Most forums for cars that often get modded for off-roading have a dedicated section for discussing off-road mods. Good luck!
I love this channel! My wife and I are wanting to enter the adventure of overlanding! We recently purchased an '08 CRV and would love to set it up. We are in Wyoming. Do you guys know anyone in your community in the Montana/Wyoming/South Dakota/Colorado territory?
These are just roads on BLM lands. You can also find roads like these on National Forest lands. Look at a map, pick an area of public lands, and just start poking up roads. I usually pre-scout with Google Earth and topographical maps to roughly plan some kind of loop that might have interesting points, but also make many of my best discoveries accidentally, just making unplanned turns up small side roads and spurs. Once you start doing it, you'll gain a feel for it. I recommend having some kind of offline navigation system on board which doesn't rely on cell service, because there usually is none. These roads are rarely marked in any way, they split and split again and can all start to look the same, so having a way to navigate your way back out is wise. I use Gaia GPS which allows you to pre-download multiple map layers of the area you're going into and uses your device's GPS (which works regardless of cell service) to show you where you are on the map, and can also record your route so you can always backtrack if needed. I also run an older Garmin GPS I picked up for cheap off Craigslist, it has proven useful as well. This is probably my most frequently asked question so I *am* planning to make a video which will cover all of this. :-)

I'm not certain to be honest. I do believe that some engines expect a certain amount of back pressure from the exhaust system, so if the exhaust flows TOO freely, the rest of the motor doesn't function properly? That's something I've read before without fully understanding it and I don't even know if it applies to these old Honda engines. Perhaps he was just concerned about the crack worsening on the trail and something coming apart. Or he may have wanted to take his time going over everything else more thoroughly to make sure there was no other damage. If I remember right, he managed to find another manifold at a junkyard that afternoon and had replaced his cracked manifold by the end of the day. :-)

@softroadingthewest thank you for the response. I'm sorry I did want the 3rd gen info, it's very unfortunate it got totalled. 😔 Those 1st gen crv's are awesome !!
When each of you was going through the water I thought, "What different driving styles." Then you have the personality type segment. Don't know what prompted you to throw that in this video but it might have been my favorite segment?
It didn't really register with me at the time, but when I started editing the video I realized we had each taken the same puddle with distinctly different approaches and knew I *had* to do something with that. :-)
I have a fifth Black Rhino wheel mounted with a full size KO2 spare in my trunk. I took my chances for a long time carrying only the OEM donut spare, but knew that I was living dangerously. I wouldn't want to find myself 50 miles deep into the backcountry on primitive roads and need to extract on that flimsy stock spare. Compared to other goodies, it's a painful thing to spend money on since it just sits, unused and unseen, but the peace of mind is nice to have...one less worry when I'm out there. :-)

He had to do what made sense to him. He may have wanted to more thoroughly inspect for other damage without being out on the trail. He also jumped on the repair, I think he had found a replacement at a junkyard and had fixed his car by the end of the day. Fair enough. He knows this area very well already and wasn't necessarily missing out on anything, I don't think we hit a single trail he hasn't already run himself. :-)
Mike Thompson On basic forest roads like this I usually go down to 23 psi from my on-pavement pressure of 40. When traction is a bigger concern I’ll go down to 18, and all the way to 12 in sand.
