    In case some of the viewers are unaware, doing what Ed does is a LOT of work! Being a bodyman for 1/2 a century I know what he’s up against. And Mike doesn’t seem to do much. Searching the interweb, picking up parts and dealing with buyers/sellers is not very demanding on a small scale. I often wonder what Mike does while he’s not helping Ed with the 100’s of repair hours on these job. Perhaps a lot of tea time🤷

    Everybody throwing rocks at Mike. They made a good show together. Edd´s new channel is nice, but it doesn´t work as good as Wheeler Dealer did, and that proves that Mike also mattered. The gossip is gossip and haters gonna hate.

    When you have a program like Wheeler Dealers, Edd was the whole show, basically reviving the cars, now that he had his own program he is doing better, showing the different problems some of these cars might have, and how he resolves them,

  • @foxyloon
    @foxyloon 2 года назад +20

    I honestly think the differences in style of film production, and being thousands of miles away from home, were getting to Ed. He's a mechanic first and foremost, not an actor that can recite complicated lines first try.

    • @Snarl616
      @Snarl616 Год назад

      No, apparently the Bentley episode also had lots of screaming and yelling off camera. Not everything is so heavenly when recording.
      I think the real problem is that the producers messed up the characters of Edd and Mike beyond belief. In the early series everything looked like they were two good friends, with Mike finding the correct car to save, giving an encouraging storytelling and presentation of the car they were restoring, and trusting his mechanic fully, who always accepted every challenge, therefore everything looked easy or at least in a healthy environment. That's why I think Edd is so (rightfully) liked.
      Then, the producers had to mess the characters of the two guys. In the last seasons with Edd, Edd whines too much and complains about being "too much work" and Mike is pictured with all the uncool features of a boss who likes his job but doesn't really care about the mechanic's job. That's where I think WD is less cool.
      If the producers of WD will ever read this, please reduce every drama to ZERO. We wanna learn about cars in a peaceful way. We don't want to see no drama because we already get stressed at work every day.

      @@Snarl616 That’s what I was trying to imply when I said “Differences in film production”.
      In the US, film producers are notorious for turning a long running series into a reality show drama to refresh things. In their minds, it’s a guaranteed way to make a series more universally appealing to a wider audience, thus increasing viewership on paper.
      In practice, it leads to a situation where long time fans walk away because the show loses what made it popular and unique to begin with. A shadow of its former self, waning like so many good shows of the past often do.

    • @Snarl616
      @Snarl616 Год назад +1

      @@foxyloon Now I see what you mean and I agree on that. To be honest with you, I don't get the storyline of the Bronco episode: so they bought a beyond repair Bronco without inspecting it just to see it's no good, then they find a good shell and they used that to fix the car, so actually half the episode is pointless. So why didn't they just buy two Broncos and use the bad one as a donor car, like every mechanic does?
      Also, don't forget that people watch these episodes to learn how to restore or fix the cars. The last seasons with edd really don't tell me anything about this. I still think the producers are at fault for making Edd China go away, for depicting Mike like a douchebag (which he's NOT), and ultimately for breaking their friendship.

    • @foxyloon
      @foxyloon Год назад +1

      @@Snarl616 With the UK episodes, the whole story of the episode felt genuine and organic. Mike shows the ropes of buying a potential project car, he takes it to Edd to fix up, then Mike sells the car on for a profit once the work is done. Not only was the show entertaining, with the lighthearted banter between Mike and Edd being amusing, but the show also has educational value. Mike would show you what to look out for when buying a car, and Edd would be pivotal in showing how to diagnose and troubleshoot issues. The film crew worked alongside the actors, documenting the whole process with little curation of their part.
      Meanwhile, US film producers have a habit of controlling every aspect of the production process they can, including the scripting of each episode. The cars are purchased by the film studio beforehand, often with the "seller" being a paid actor for Mike to jive with for the "buying the car" scene, and Edd (later Anthony) is at the mercy of what the film crew and producers tell him to do. Sticking to a script instead of organically repairing a car like Edd did.
      Sticking with your Bronco episode example, indeed the smart thing to do would have been to use the donor shell and take the parts from the other truck to build it out. Yet the script calls for an episode featuring extensive metal work, so they can film their mechanic cutting and grinding at welds while narration plays over it discussing what he's doing. The goal wasn't to restore and flip a Bronco, but to showcase the process of metal fabrication and bodywork, while playing out the rest of the story to keep to the original formula of the show.
      I'd say change the formula of the script to better align with the producer's intentions, but they don't want to alienate the existing fans of the show. I'd argue they already did so.

    • @Snarl616
      @Snarl616 Год назад +1

      @@foxyloon Right, except they didn't even do fabrication, as far as I remember. Simply they cut the bad Bronco and showed that it was unrepairable, and then they find a painted, much cheaper Bronco, and they complete that, including an incredibly long final trip with the complete vehicle. Sounds much more like any american wannabe "car restoration" program than Wheeler Dealers.
      I'm starting to think that after the first season, Wheeler Dealers went back to UK after seeing that the US producers were killing the show.

    Edd was usually quite calm when Mike brought in random cars, but the second he saw that Bronco enter the workshop, he was pissed... obviously he's had a troubled past with those cars and obviously dislikes them due to their reputation of rust/damage, despite the car itself being quite iconic. The most interesting time I see Edd lose his temper was when he was burring an exhaust valve port for the Sunbeam Alpine, and then the producers and camera crew really pissed him off when they didn't want to film anymore on that scene; he's trying to show a good example of how to gain more engine power and remove excess material! He also seemed to lose it a bit when talking about the history of Porsche's production years due to the amount of takes he did on that one scene. Goes to show that Edd sometimes can crack like an egg when things go from bad to worse. Only real fun time he had in that series was him test driving the Porsche 912 on the race track and really giving it all of its 86HP.

    Those long shaft grinding bits can be potentially very dangerous, even lethal. I worked in a die shop where a guy was killed when hit in the throat by a disintegrating bit put in an inappropriate air die grinder. They should be run at an appropriate speed, ie, very slow..

Love Eds new channel actually shows complex stuff and very useful tips unlike WD now that barely shows basic tips and treats audience as if they no nothing about mechanics. Hence why I don't really watch the show. I used to have respect for Mike but not anymore.
