0:00 2 bars of 4/4 then a bar of 3/4. The pickup is on the last sixteenth note of the 3/4 bar. 0:08 3 full bars of 4/4 this time with the melody. Again, the pickup to the next phrase starts on the last sixteenth note. 0:16 2 bars of 4/4 followed by an extra 1/4 leading into a new riff. 0:22 6 full bars of the new riff in 3/4. 0:33 Back to the original motif without melody. This time four bars of 4/4 followed by an extra 1/4. 0:45 Everything from 0:08-0:44 repeats. 1:22 Solo form: 5 bars of 4/4 follow by 1 bar of 3/4. Repeats twice. 1:52-2:21 I can't decipher a time signature for this section but there is a clear repeating pattern. Here are the sixteenth note groupings the bassist and pianist follow: 9,7,7,9,9,7,9,7,7,9,9,6 (repeats twice). It would add up to 95/16 but it seems pretty far fetched that the Bad Plus would be thinking of it this way.
As someone who doesn't have a technical understanding of music, I have great respect for anyone who can understand the mathematical expressions of what we hear. Thank you for reminding me of this feeling again, my friend.
I love how The Bad Plus has held to the trio format for years, then explored adding different instruments, voice, and personnel. Long live “The Bad Plus”! ❤😊
The song is so intriguing because Redman is playing over multiple time signature changes and also because the band uses displacement throughout the piece. Redman's melodies fit like a glove over the intricate time changes and if you listen to Iverson you can follow the meter changes more easily than with the bass or drums (at least for me). Reid Anderson wrote this song. This band is awesome.
This has been through the years one of my favourite contemporary musical compositions. It has such a nice theme to it, just gets me consistently into a mood every time. If music could tell a tale, this would be one very interesting tale indeed.

Oh, I have the same cheap cymbals bag -- end of similarities.
I just saw them last Sunday at Berklee College of Music Performance Center in Boston (a great little auditorium!) A brilliant show. These guys really know how to play together. It brought to mind Joe Zawinul's description of Weather Report when they first started: "We never solo, and we always solo."
I just got my mind blown off! This is amazing, first time hearing about this group and Joshua. I salute these guys and i am now a fan for life. Thank you for the inspiration, the odds of these guys ever coming to play in my country are like a zillion to one ,thank God for technology i can also marvel and be taken away....
Why is this so cool? Why does Redman want to play against these harmonies and melodies. I think the timing and changes excites him, as well as a new format. Redman, Potter, Garrett are my 3 fave saxophonists by far and I have learned so much joy from their albums.
The first couple times I listened to this I spent a lot of my attention trying to figure out the time signatures. A few listens in I let go and just enjoyed the listen. A hundred or so listens in, I ignore the time signatures intellectually and bob my head and move naturally without noticing or thinking about it. The song has a sneaky way of turning on your body and brain that feels very natural. One of my favorite TBP tunes and this live version is F'n amazing.
He's actually repeating the pattern they first played at 1:52. I'm not sure what time signature you would go with but the pattern follows this long series of sixteenth note groups: 9,7,7,9,9,7,9,7,7,9,9,6. They repeat it twice before moving on to the next section so it isn't random but I still can't figure out what to make of it.
Yes, this is an amazing song as it is but the atmosphere of the room, the acoustics, and the mixing/engineering make this video a treasure. Its rare that a tune can entrance me like this one has, for over 4 years now; I come back to this video in particular when I want to hear this song.
Wondrous ! I saw them a couple weeks before In Victoria at Jazzfest...absolutely mezmerizing ! The drummer knocked our socks off too ! I listen to KPLU all the time as well..Bravo !
So I've been searching for a Bad Plus song that I can't seem to find....let me try to translate it into words....i think it's just all players just playing one note...over and over again. Drums plays snare and large tom-tom together while they play this one note in this almost non-rhythmic pattern. They play it for over a minute and then builds up into this loud and heavy zeppelinish jam. Anyone have a clue???
@@kwyman986 Hell yeah! THAT'S IT!! I couldn't find it on Spotify. Didn't know they didn't have that album there! For a while I thought I might have confused them with another band or maybe such song didn't exist. Thanks mate!!
Nice One ! (an obsolete expression, maybe, but 'the moment slips away'). Try to shape it - use it - make it - eternal music, all living things must die - but are echoes of eternity.
really trying to understand the time signatures here. i transcribed the harmony/chords but naively placed them over a 4/4. can anyone offer any hints about how the rhythm/meter is structured?
It's really interesting how subtly similar Joshua Redman's solo is to the album version, in its structure. Aside from his replaying of the melody funly at the end of it

Joshua Redman is a legend
I love how The Bad Plus has held to the trio format for years, then explored adding different instruments, voice, and personnel. Long live “The Bad Plus”! ❤😊
I've listened to this piece about a hundred times, and I consider it the epitome of intelligent jazz. Thank you, Joshua, you are a great master!
I fell in love with this song the moment that i heard it for the first time.

Whatever this man says... I don't know music theory and shit but this is good music
An absolute beautiful tune. One that will come back to many times. The record is one that must be in a collection of modern Jazz.

LOL! gotta start somewhere....
Same here! hahahahaa
I got a nice hardcase for my cymbals and worse everything else...
This is the best thing I’ve heard in a long time
Agreed!

And that's how you get the gig.

One of my favorite TBP tunes and this live version is F'n amazing.
Ethan's polyrhythms at 5:09 blag my head when even thinking about attempting to play this (11/8 on the left hand, 7/8 on the right?). 10/10

This is one of the most creative compositions I’ve heard in years. Amazingly mesmerizing
Joshua Redman has a true science of tempo ! Excellent theme !
By algebra, if Bad plus Joshua Redman is good, then Joshua Redman is equal to the difference between good and bad.
zebra3stripes and good without Joshua Redman is bad
😂
terrence howard’s would disagree 😂
I have no idea why watching this made me feel so euphoric! For real though, this was so spiritual!
Top notch, great musicianship. Met Dave once really funny and kind person.
my favorite, redman !!!!! tune ....
It is a magnificent work of art, congrats !!!
my favourite track, very nice live combo and top video/audio/artistic quality, congratulation to sound engineer

The pocket blows my mind. They're such a tight group! I'd love just to be some spare change in that pocket.
This is golden.
amazing engineering, who does kplu?
Hi Kevin,
Our very own John Kessler does our engineering! Thanks for listening and watching!
Love the TBP+JR combination.

Can't wait to see this amazing quartet at North Sea Jazz this weekend!!

Clockwork drumming
I keep coming back to 2:45 😍
WOW!
Dave is truly da King.
immovable object meets unstoppable force
Very nice.
joey bada$$ and pusha t just sampled this in the song "No Explanation"
MUCH better than the album version...
Benjamin Truffert Agreed, just sounds more full and whole.
Wow....feel good
Bad man ting

top show
cool!
Sounds almost like the studio version of the song. pretty unique sound though
Thanks for watching!
consistent effortlessness
Can someone explain the time signatures?
It's as if their name was meant to have 'Joshua Redman' added to it at some point!

Anyone knows which model is this amazing upright piano? Yamaha U1?
Yamaha U3! Thanks for watching!
KNKX Public Radio thanks a lot! Do you think this model is suitable for classical repertoire as well? Greetings from Turkey!
Wouldn't know specifically, but we regularly get compliments on it from musicians visiting our studios!
KNKX Public Radio Thanks again, your videos are simply magnificent. It’s amazing to discover hidden gems through this channel. Thanks a million times!
What's the timing?
7/4
Joey Bada$$ bought me here
That sax playing amongst the others sounds like a snake looks as it crawls through a series of boxes. That's my version of a musical theory analysis.

really trying to understand the time signatures here. i transcribed the harmony/chords but naively placed them over a 4/4. can anyone offer any hints about how the rhythm/meter is structured?
dagharr2 Multiple time signatures, constantly changing. I hear 4/4, 2/4, 6/4, 6/8, 9/8, 7/8. Even 11/8 for a few bars?
Vin Diesel playing saxophone.
It's really interesting how subtly similar Joshua Redman's solo is to the album version, in its structure. Aside from his replaying of the melody funly at the end of it
Dave King is on fire anyways
This track is hip-hop af
This song with some good vocals would be an absolute masterpiece. In my opinion.
it is odd to see EI in jeans
