In 1985 i opened for WAR and he came out of the bus and talked to me and showed me his foot pedals and all his harmonicas and even gave me a Eb harp . A real nice guy and genuine.
My friend and Harmonica player knows Lee Oskar since 1971 when he was 18. They have played together many times. I saw him at San Juan Capistrano at the Harmonica Blowout and he signed my CD. He was playing with Curtis Salgado and you could not stop either one of them. They were turning it out. He is a Cool guy. My friend wants me to go with him and Lee Oskar and another friend to the Harmonica Spah Convention. One of these times I will go. I hear it is fun and so much to see and do there. Cheers!
.....when you have the oppertunity to play with someone, the calibre of Lee, it elevates your playing. As illustriated by this performance.......these guys really rose to the occasion.......GOOD JOB EVERYBODY................
I met Mr. Oskar at Mo’s Music in Fullerton. Probably early nineties. I had never given a harmonica a second look until he started playing one in the store. He had a beautiful glass case with his harmonicas in there. That piece gets all of Oskar’s attention and love and passion when he’s playing. The harmonica appreciates him so much. Hey Lee, you still in touch with Larry Samson? He was my guitar teacher. Flippin’ mixolydian bs. Hopefully I’ll catch on one day. Nice vid. Just relaxin’ in the street and doin what ya love. Good for you guys.
Love it. ! Music is your expression. Not only your technic. You learnt me this Lee! to all of you viewing, check out Lees vid on the tube, specially when he talks music philosophy Tack så mycket! from Sweden
Lee Oskar, was amazing in the way he used his instrument as an inside voice of the "War" R&B fusion horn section. Nobody else has ever really done that, and it absolutely makes so much musical sense. Once you mic the "harp", the sound can be colored in many ways, but the breathiness is always there in the background. Every once in a while, it peeks up out of the inner texture, but he seldom has it in your face as a constant solo instrument, the way that most blues harp players do. Through most of their songs, you'd swear it was a saxophone. Sometimes you really hear it more as a harmonica, but it always serves the needs of the song! (see him doing his thing at 2:00 ) A real musician's musician, as all of these hit-making guys tended to be! It's all about the groove!
Imagine walking down the street, watching him play the harmonica. I would ask you to give me one, I have played this instrument for more than ten years.
That day after the performance he had a harmonica for newbies workshop, which I attended and was interesting. He handed over to everybody a small free book on how to combine harmonica with guitar. It was organized by Long&McQuade, so they had that day discounts on his harmonicas and he also engraved harmonicas while there, plus did custom tunnings.
Thank you very much and glad to be in assistance! I loved seeing Lee perform live. He did also a workshop which I recorded and will upload in near future.
He actually did lots of things that day. 1) He did signed autographs 2) He did a presentation on "Introduction to Harmonica", like "Harmonica for newbies" sort of thing for nearly 2 hrs and 3) he actually engraved harmonicas on the spot, if you buy one of his harmonicas and also if you buy one of his harmonicas he would 4) do custom tuning on the spot! 5) And there was a small booklet I don't remember the title, but it was about playing a harmonica along with guitar, sort of a reference guide, which he gave for free.
