    I'm not autistic but I do have ADHD. I consider myself a Marxist and lately I've been quite interested in the correlation between neurodivergence and socialist tendencies. Glad that I found this!

    So ecstatic to find this. I’m an autistic socialist feminist and grad student, and I’ve been thinking about putting together a talk on autism and the capitalist motives behind the anti-vax/anti-neurodiversity backlash. You’ve essentially already done that, but maybe I can cite your work in mine? 💜🖤

    I'm on the spectrum and like so many others, I have Sensory Processing Disorder. So far I'm 4:27 into the video and the several sudden loud blasts of high volume sound that have happened have been quite painful and make it impossible to watch any further. I assume that content-wise your intention is to be Autism-friendly, but from a technical point of view this video is certainly not Autistic-friendly.

    • @JanineBooth
      @JanineBooth  7 лет назад +4

      Yeah, sorry about that. This was one of my first goes at using PowerPoint with narration, and I have the (autistic?) habit of starting new sentences or thoughts with a sudden burst of loudness.
      I'll be producing new, updated videos, and will do my best to regulate the volume more effectively.

      Gabdube Why? It's not about ableism in general, it is about the experience/oppression of autistic people.

      Sadly autism seems to be used more and more as an tasteless insult, at least on the internet. When clicking on the video I expected defamatory against Marxists by linking them to developmental disease, obviously I was very positively surprised when noticing that was not the case. So I agree with Gabdude.

    This is fantastic. There is an urgent need for protecting neurodiversity from the exploitations you outlined.
    The trajectory of human integration with technology is also worth pursuing, I think. Integration into social networks and having stringent social compatibility criteria were absolutely a part of my workplace experience.
    These are unique manifestations of capitalist exploitation, but (and maybe you would agree) basically every cultural system has found ways of pathologizing various neurodiversities.

      Your comments are very interesting. My aim with this video is to open questions as well as answering them - to flag up areas for more debate, and the ones you mention are interesting and relevant. I'll give it some thought.

      "neurodiversity"
      AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Is MS a form of valuable neurological diversity? What about Alzheimer's? Or cerebral palsy?
      No, disabilities are not a social construct, Janine. You don't actually know a fucking thing about disease and disability, because you're lecturing on Marxism, which makes you a useless person. Useful people lecture on useful things that help to improve the human condition, you are an ideologue.
      You're in your 50's, and THIS is the most useful thing you can do with your time? You're in the running to be a lifelong waster, it's fucking pathetic. I qualified as an engineer when I was 21, you eat because people like me do actual work.

    • @JanineBooth
      @JanineBooth  7 лет назад +4

      Generally speaking, abusive, content-free comments convince no-one.
      The answer to your opening questions are, for all three, "No".

    • @phillycheesetake
      @phillycheesetake 7 лет назад +1

      Enjoy the food shipped to your supermarket, mechanical and hydraulic components of my design likely got it there.
      You need to eat, and keep up your strength, to think of more creative ways of ruining minds with Marxist bullshit. Marx, like you, was also a lifelong waster, never had a real job in his life, dragged his family through misery, incompetent with money...kind of makes one think that his failings influenced his theories.

    • @JanineBooth
      @JanineBooth  7 лет назад +7

      Excuse me, but what do you think you know about me? What do you think you know about my work and my contribution to society?
      You certainly have a high opinion of your own contribution, but how does that entitle you to assume that others make no contribution?
      Or do you really think that making this video is my actual job?!

    Can confirm. I have a friend who is confirmed to be autistic, transgender and depressed. He detest capitalism and loves communism.
    Apparently, he can't understand that he can't force different people who have diverse aspiration. He rather has authoritarian communism.
    Do you have any suggestion on how I should treat him in daily life? Reasoning with logic doesn't seems work well.
    Thank you

    • @JanineBooth
      @JanineBooth  4 года назад +9

      I would say to listen, in a way that you understand that he may communicate differently from you. Respond to what he says rather than what you think he means.
      There is a 'double empathy' problem. Mainstream society thinks that autistic people can't empathise with others, but at the same time, non-autistic people struggle to empathise with autistic people.
      It can be hard work, but it's worth the effort. usually!

    You start your presentation with incorrect definition of Autism. It looks manipulative.

    • @JanineBooth
      @JanineBooth  7 лет назад +2

      Ernesto How is my definition of autism incorrect? How do you define it?

    • @AnteCustic
      @AnteCustic 7 лет назад +1

      You say that it is a atypical neurology leading to atypical behavior, implying that is just a harmless variation, like for example being very introverted. And an analogy you give is windows vs apple computer, and from scientific and users point of view, windows and apple computers have exactly the same structure and functionality.
      However, everywhere else on the internet I found that autism is defined something like: "disability significantly affecting verbal and non-verbal communication and social interaction" and/or "disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior." And is so significant that is diagnosed already around age two. Therefore, autism is considered to be something serious and often significantly debilitating in many aspects.

    • @JanineBooth
      @JanineBooth  7 лет назад +2

      Ernesto Yes, that's correct. why do you disagree with that? What is your alternative definition?

    • @JanineBooth
      @JanineBooth  7 лет назад +13

      Those other definitions you find are from a point of view that sees autism as an impairment, as some kind of damage.
      I am challenging that view, as are many autistic activists and academics.
      Similarly, the medical establishment used to see homosexuality as a mental disorder rather than as part of the natural diversity of human sexuality.
