Unboxing and Setting Up My First Stratus Mid Rise Lift! (PART 1)

    I have dreamt of a garage lift since I began working on cars over 25 years ago. I always thought I had to get an expensive two-post lift and bolt it to the floor, but I was wrong! Open center scissor lifts are a fantastic option for FWD, AWD and RWD vehicles and they allow you to retain the parking spot in your garage. This particular lift will provide up to 40" of height!
    After hours of research, I ended up with what I believe to be one of the best options out there: The Stratus MSOC80e mid rise open center scissor lift. For $100 more I nearly chose the MS8000e, but ultimately decided against it because I thought it was much wider than the MSOC80e (I was wrong, see video). I also chose the MSOC80e because it has 14 lock positions and the 8000 has 9. The 8000 does have a much better looking, fully enclosed control box. If that's important to you, you may want to go with the 8000.
    I did find a few issues with the lift and while I note them in the video, I'll also note them here.
    1) The ramp-to-ramp width at the time of purchase listed on the site (~70") does not match the as-built condition (~77")
    2) 1 of 4 ramp release structures installed backwards (easy fix)
    3) Multiple fasteners missing from safety lock actuator brackets
    4) User guide is incorrect regarding how to adjust the speed of the downward motion of the lift (guide says counterclockwise = slower and clockwise = faster). IT IS OPPOSITE OF THIS!
    5) It's listed as "portable" but at nearly 1400lbs with the control box, you better have a forklift and a flatbed diesel if you plan on taking this thing to the track!
    Aside from those items the lift appears well made and it's performing as expected. Stratus answered the phone pretty much every time I called and the gal I spoke with knew a lot about the various lifts they sell. She was really nice too.
    If you have a somewhat lower vehicle, you may need to have ramps and then add 2x6 pieces to the thin blocks they provide to ensure the pinch welds are contacted properly and the side skirts are not smashed. The hardest part of this process was unloading it off the pallet!
    Here's the cost breakdown:
    MSOC80e: $1750 (no tax if you're not in TX)
    Freight Delivery: $450
    Residential Lift-Gate Delivery: $100
    AW46 Hydraulic Oil and 110V plug: $50
    TOTAL: $2350

    Something I do highly recommend with body lifts is using a rubber block (similar to a regular lift) that you slide under and onto the pinch welds (especially with lowered cars). For a slammed 2GS like mine I love the my local hobby shop for having these at they’re shop

    As an electrical engineer use the 30 Amp receptacle. Also if you buy a plug it will tell you what wire goes where. So you won’t make that mistake. Just remember before working on anything electrical. TURN OFF THE POWER. if you are unsure which circuit to hit. Just hit the main. Either way you safe. Don’t ask me about the color code. It changed the year after I graduated.

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  2 года назад

      Yeah, the 15A has worked for 2 years now. 98% of the time there are no issues. However, a couple times it has popped a breaker inside the Stratus unit itself. It’s an easy “fix” (flip the breaker back) but doing it to 30A the first time would prevent this inconvenience. On my next lift, the 9000XT, I plan to have an electrician come in and just do a 220 outlet nearby. I was quoted $230 for that.

    If you made a hole in the ground, like the holes that are made in the workshops , it would be better and cheaper, and you could make a cover for it , to close it when not in use, not only that, working standing and raising your hands up is comfortable, but with this lifter, You can not work under the car while standing completely. this is just an opinion .

      You’re welcome. The hard part is you cannot gauge the speed without a load on the lift. So you almost have to test it with a car on there. It would be much better if it was set on “way too slow” from the factory and we could adjust from there instead.

    I've been looking at narrow lifts for my residential two car garage. This is a strong consideration. My truck is 7100lbs so it will work for that. My question is how tall are the little ramps? I would be parking my car (2013 Mustang GT, stock ride height) there. I have about 4" of reliable clearance.... Nice video!
    Edit to add: You can raise your garage door tracks to get more clearance, but you'll loose your storage space.

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  3 года назад

      Hi - thanks for the comment and question. Stratus lists the min height as 4.125”. In my case, as you probably saw, my floor has Garage Flooring LLC TrueLock tiles, which are about .33” thick. Thus my min is about 3.8”. My car is now lowered and fits no prob. It would be close for your Mustang at 4”. Also, I have had some trouble with this lift design and the lock mechanisms and Stratus is going to send me the new design in JAN. They are also sending frame attach bars for trucks. That said, I would personally wait for the new design. I’ll be testing it thoroughly and I will release an episode on it as well.
      Thanks for the mention on the garage door. I’ll definitely keep it in mind!

    Great video. Very curious: what is the purpose of those floor tiles?

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  2 года назад +2

      Thank you. The tiles are for looks and grip. I would liken it to a wood floor in the house - not entirely necessary, but much more comfortable. If I could go back in time I would get solid tiles instead of vented. A lot of stuff drops into these tiles and it drives me nuts!

  • @NoShadowOfDoubt1
    @NoShadowOfDoubt1 6 дней назад

    Hi, why not on top of the tiles? I’m asking because I have same.

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  6 дней назад +1

      2 reasons: 1) the lift slides pretty easily when my front tires bump into the ramps and on the tiles it would be very slick. 2) the weight of the lift with a car on it exceeded the tile max weight rating.

    Why does no one ever talk about price?

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  3 года назад +1

      I normally do in most of my car mod videos. However, I did not here because: 1) shipping is a huge factor depending on location and/or if residential lift gate service is needed or not 2) lift pricing is subject to change and these videos could be up for years or decades seemingly spreading false pricing info 3) it’s really not that hard to Google it or click the links (or use the info) in the vid description to find it. 4) if I said this lift cost me $1800 it would be misleading considering one must add nearly $600 for delivery and potentially tax if the person lives in a certain area.

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  Год назад +1

      No but that’s a great idea. I suspect these are -4AN? Please report back if you figure something out. I’m guessing Stratus avoids this due to the risk of fluid bleed (thereby lowering the lift).

    • @Aticus24
      @Aticus24 Год назад

      @@ForwardMomentum I don't have stratus but a very similar lift that looks to be from the same factory. They told me the fitting size is M14x1.5 C Type. I believe c type is JIC which is similar to AN. Now I'm just trying to locate a metric to standard fitting to use hydraulic disconnects. Good point about the lift slowly going down but I believe all load is off the hydraulics once it lowers down on the lock bar.
