  • I recorded this probably on medium wave radio somewhere between 1982 and 1984. I know this as the Soviet leader mentioned in the news report, served only that period. There is no time or date mentioned at the beginning of the news as you might usually expect, and the news stories are quite vague about statements and speeches, which i can't pin a date to. Indira Gandhi died the same year as Andropov 1984
This posting is a documentation of something historical. No political comments please

The only nice thing I can say about Moscow after living there for eleven years (2006 to 2017) is this Radio Moscow World Service tune that I use to listen to on my shortwave radio in the eighties. There were a lot of good jazz orchestras around eastern Europe in the seventies and eighties. Most other other things I experienced in Moscow and Moscow Oblast were negative. I never took anything back to England worth much, except psychosis. What happened to this part of the world after seventy-five years of soviet socialism will linger for generations to come... Of course they blame the Americans.

As a young Shortwave Listener in the 80's I know this tune well. I feel for the Russian people, all they ever wanted was the life of the west if they were not poisoned too much mentally. In the early 90's Russians were welcomed to the UK and the shops had lots of Russian products like camera's and optics at crazy low prices, but things changed for the worst around 2010 onwards. With regard to your negative feeling of the experience, all I can add is that none of the ex-Soviet states that have tasted democracy (with the exception of well placed Russian puppet leaders) ever wants to go back to it....and the closer they are to the Russian border they tend to have more tanks.
