He didn't have to defeat everything, he just happened to do so.
Four hours of the 4:29 was from his penalty quest from not finishing his daily quest. He got lucky, he was able to heal and recover.
That was separate from the job quest, but the time in that penalty was counted in his favor.
There are 5 more cours coming, they should have plenty of time to tell the story.

I can definitely see what you mean. After this episode I didn't exactly think he would be a villain but I had a feeling that he was going to become alot colder. However, I'm currently reading Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, so I feel like he might have more of a Dokja attitude with a slight bit more coldness as the story progresses.
