It says to mix on medium for 2 mins to add air to the mixture. Cutting the time will make the cake less airy and more flat.

And the cake mixes are usually made with cake flour, which has less gluten to activate, so “overmixing” with it is harder to so

Agreed. It’s hard because we all think we know better but as a reviewer how can you judge without first trying it according to their directions?
I don't mind her not following directions, realistically I would've tweaked it myself too. I wanted to throw strawberries over the pudding and bananas in between the layers of the cake while I was watching. There's two types in the world 😅 those of us who just want to see "what if" and those of us who need a guarantee.
@@brandi524 I agree with that normally, but when she doesn’t follow directions, and it doesn’t work… how can we know if we should try the recipe? It just isn’t great when she is wrong so often, and we can’t tell if it is bc of the recipe or because of the changes.

I was going to say that it's not banana puddin' cake without the nilla wafers, it's just banana cake.
I was born and raised in Michigan and whenever anyone makes a banana pudding dish here for any kind of party or gathering there is also nilla wafers involved its typically layered like this.

2.banana pudding
3.whipped cream/cool whip.
Cake batters usually specify a long beating time so lots of air gets incorporated- the goal is a light and fluffy cake! (You might’ve been thinking of quick breads like muffins, scones, etc which you don’t want to mix very long)
Ehhh, not really true at all. It is likely better to whisk the eggs separately to get the air and then combine with the cake flour. You can get a denser, tough crumb if you do it too long. Granted there is less gluten in cake flour so likely the two minutes on a low speed would be fine.
@@aboynamedjayyit is true! My sister is a pastry chef at a Michelin star in Vancouver. Cake batter needs air beaten into it. And no, beating the eggs separately gives a totally different texture of cake.

We did a test blending cake mix. Does it need the full 2 mins? Yes. It adds air and volume, and you'll get fluffier cake!!😊
But with the flour that just seems like a recipe for a rock hard cake? I don't understand the science behind this :P
@RachhLovesLife as far as I know, boxed cakes are made with flour that has a lower protein, so unlike a cake from scratch, you don't have to worry about creating too much gluten by "over mixing." Another thing is that it aerates the eggs, the volume increases, and the cake is fluffier.

I thought the same thing and never mixed enough. Next time do the full time, you’ll se how it puffs up! Cake flour with the fat added is actually hard to overmix in 2-3 mins (see recent claire video!)
@@RachhLovesLifeyou were right about mixing the wet ingredients first. My mom always do cakes like that and they are amazing. That is how you you get the fluff- by incorporating air in eggs and butter because you can mix them longer and you don’t over mix the flour.
@@RachhLovesLife I'm a second generation professional cake gal, overworking cakes takes longer than 2 min because the batter is very different from something like a bread dough. In general, the recommended time to beat cake batter is 3-5 min on medium speed, so the mix was actually being conservative with their 2 min recommendation.
You can overwork cake mix, it's just going to take a lot longer than it would with other baked goods. The one time I overworked a cake batter it sat in my KitchenAid for 20 min because I had a newborn at the time and forgot I was baking. 😅 Mixing well for 2-5 min incorporates air into the batter and gives you a light fluffy sponge. It's the same idea as whipping up egg whites and folding them in, just fewer steps, less temperamental, and because it is done with all of the ingredients not as fluffy as something like an angel food cake.
For the cake, if you put a border of frosting around the edge, and then put the pudding and stuff in the middle, it will keep the pudding from sliding out.

Banana medicine?! In the US children's antibiotic suspensions are usually bubblegum! I think you can request different flavors but bubblegum is the default here. It's just something I never even considered might be different anywhere else so my mind is blown!
That's really interesting! In the UK, when I was a kid (mid 1980s to early 90s), it was always banana amoxicillin suspension too... And very fake banana....! I was one of those kids who preferred to take tablets, but doctors would always insist kids had the suspension! Ha!
In Canada we have the banana Amoxicillin too so that is what he was referring to.

It’s 1000% amoxicillin. I live in the US and that’s where I had to take what I was a child(early 80’s). I still have issues eating a real banana.

Chris is right. Cream cheese frosting is amazing with banana cake! My mom’s recipe uses bananas in the batter which uses up brown bananas & tops it with cream cheese frosting. My favorite cake! I think the cake you are making is based on southern banana pudding. That is why it uses whipped cream, vanilla wafers & sliced bananas.
Product rec! I LOVE cooling gel pillow inserts. I don’t necessarily love them as a pillow to sleep on but I get really bad RLS and shooting pains in my feet and legs so I sleep with one under my feet and oh. My. God. Also nice over summer for under your feet any time you’re just like, sat still.
it's bone conduction. it kinda needs to be touching some part of your skull so the vibrations travel through the bone into the ear. under your pillow, it's just never gonna work

Back when cake mixes were first introduced the mix didn’t require an egg but the mixes failed to sell, so some dude in the company was like “add an egg to the ingredients required because women will like that because of the maternal instinct” well it worked and the cake mixes started flying off the shelves.

I think it had more to do with people doubting the efficacy of just adding powder to water and getting a cake, "instant" food like that was still a novelty at the time and adding an egg gave people something familiar to anchor their trust to.

My children got the kiddie couch last Christmas from my husband’s mother and stepfather and they absolutely love it and use it all the time! We are really impressed with the quality, as my children climb and jump all over it constantly and are not at all gentle with it! We are very happy with it too!

I'm currently 8 weeks pregnant for the first time ever and SOOOO tired, but I can't seem to nap. I try, and just end up lying there. Yesterday I ran some errands, and when I came back I lay down with this video playing.....and it must have been just the right cozy vibes because I fell asleep halfway through. FINALLY. I think it was probably just for 15-20 minutes, but it was something. And today I was able to nap again. Broke the nap barrier! (Yes, I did go back and rewatch the rest of the video.)

In New Zealand, banana cakes are very popular and they definitely do appear darker on the outside. We normally have them with chocolate icing or my partner does like them with cream cheese icing, or even a lemon icing 🤷🏻♀️

The best frosting for a banana cake is mixing brown sugar with cool whip. Let it sit overnight so the sugar crystals dissolve & rewhip it. So good!
7:15 I will say, if you make a lot of salads these are fantastic for pre-cut sticks. For example: peppers. Strips of peppers you can hold a group of them and just chop em up

I bought the sleep bar by dusker, it’s another speaker that goes under your pillow. I absolutely love it and mine is super clear as long as it’s under my ear, if I roll over I have to adjust it with me.
We love the Dash mini waffle maker. It's so easy for our kids to use. We keep a bag of waffle mix next to it. They have a scooper, and just know to add water. They make a waffle for a snack on their own when needed. You can keep a bowl of toppings in fridge of fruits

Amazon has sleep mask headphones that cover the eyes. I've used one for the last couple years and they're great. It has tiny flat speakers over the ears.
The Dolly cake mix etc are at Walmart so you might be able to find her frosting if you decide to try her other stuff
I've made that banana cake mix. It's awesome. I got another one to make a jello cake with when my mom comes to visit. I've had a couple ice cream/slushie makers like that with a manual handle on the top. I liked them.

This was going to be my suggestion! It looks like a miniature version of the kitchen aid mixer ice cream bowl, and with that if your ice cream mixture isn't also cold going in it doesn't work great.
I have the first iteration of the Dash personal ice cream maker. It works best when the mixture is super cold from the fridge. The time it takes to mix everything drops the temp too much to freeze well. It is always a soft serve, but definitely best when the mix is cold to start.

I've been adding instant pudding mix to all my came mix since the beginning of time. It makes it super moist and adds flavor.
I have bone conducting headphones and I will never go back to regular headphones again (unless I need noise cancelling). Soooo comfortable, and the brand I like just put out "ear buds" and darn rights they're on my birthday list for the end of the month.
For the speaker, bone conduction technology requires the device to contact the cheek or jaw bones and the inner ear picks up the vibrations. Would love an update on your thoughts if you were able to test the speaker again!!

You should try the open run by shoks. They're bone conduction but sit just in front of your ears. Absolutely fantastic for listening to things and calls

Cake mixes are formulated so that anyone can do it and it’s almost impossible to over mix. I know it goes against all the rules of making homemade cakes but these cake mixes aren’t for advanced bakers. Personally I’ve made the Dolly Parton cake mixes and they actually are pretty good. They don’t taste like a cake from a mix that’s for sure. If you wanted to make the mix without adding pudding then the recipe is normally on the side of the box instead of the back. Depends on which mix.
I have a little Onn speaker that I use to listen to audiobooks. When my husband is sleeping I put it under my pillow and can hear it just fine. I think any regular speaker should work, as long as it is loud and clear in the room. I also use a contour pillow which is thick memory foam. The Onn speaker should be even clearer under a regular fluff pillow.
The Dolly Parton coconut cake is way better. Also having the matching frosting is a plus.

As a fellow nut allergy person, I think it would be cool to see an episode with nut replacements like you did for the Rocky Road. For instance, when I make pesto I use sunflower seeds to replace the nuts.

My husband picked up the Dolly Parton coconut cake mix while shopping. I was expecting the regular cake mix recipe, and was shocked to see all the steps and extra ingredients needed. I made it with what I had at home, and it was just ok. I don't think I'll buy another one. I also almost bought the Dash ice cream maker, but I was suspicious because the price was really reduced. Now I know why! I'll stick with our Cuisinart!! Our grandkids received the Nugget couch for Christmas from their other grandparents, so I think we will buy another for them next year! Great video!

It’s actually recommended to keep the raw eggs in their carton in the fridge. Only boiled eggs in that fridge egg holder.
The carton protects them from other aromas.

Why does it matter where the air bubble is? Just coz I'm super curious how it can impact anything 😅😅
@@sophiehobley828 The air bubble in the egg should face upwards, because as the egg grows older, the bubble gets bigger (float in water test). It can thereby disrupt the integrity of the egg’s content by moving upwards if positioned wrong way around, making the egg prematurely go bad.

The Dash ice cream maker is almost there. It is like they focused on how the old ice cream makers looked and not how they worked. It needs a smaller metal bowl for the ingredients so that there is room for ice and rock salt to be placed on the outside of the metal bowl. Then it would work.

Racheal, the rule is always mix dry ingredients with dry ingredients and wet with wet when baking. Then mix them together. (Cake).
As a southerner, I definitely suggest making traditional banana pudding. 🙂 Also, I totally understand why you didn't trust the recipe directions!

I use my homemade cream cheese frosting on my banana cake. Chris is right. It’s good!
